With the significant increase in photovoltaic (PV) electricity generation, more attention has been given to PV power forecasting. Indeed, accurate forecasting allows power grid operators to better schedule and dispatch their assets, such as energy storage ...

We demonstrate that second-harmonic radiation imaging probes are efficient biomarkers for imaging in living tissue. We show that 100 nm and 300 nm BaTiO3 nanoparticles used as contrast markers could be detected through 50 mu m and 120 mu m of mouse tail ti ...

In the past decade, nanomaterials have made their way into a variety of technologies in solar energy, enhancing the performance by taking advantage of the phenomena inherent to the nanoscale. Recent examples exploit plasmonic core/shell nanoparticles to ac ...

We investigate analytically, numerically, and experimentally the modulational instability in a layered, cubically nonlinear (Kerr) optical medium that consists of alternating layers of glass and air. We model this setting using a nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS ...

We present an optical approach for intracellular delivery of molecules contained within oxidation-sensitive polymersomes. The photosensitizer ethyl eosin is associated with the polymersome membrane to oxidatively increase the hydrophilicity of the hydropho ...

We report on a method to obtain confocal imaging through multimode fibers using optical correlation. First, we measure the fiber's transmission matrix in a calibration step. This allows us to create focused spots at one end of the fiber by shaping the wave ...

Deep neural networks (DNNs) are employed to recover information after its propagation through a multimode fiber (MMF) in the presence of wavelength drift. The intensity distribution of the speckle patterns generated at the output of an MMF when an input wa ...

We introduce a new method for performing and miniaturizing many types of heterogeneous catalysis involving nanoparticles. The method makes use of the plasmon resonance present in nanoscale metal catalysts to provide the necessary heat of reaction when illu ...

We demonstrate a digital phase conjugation technique for generating a sharp focus point at the end of a multimode optical fiber. A sharp focus is experimentally obtained at the distal end of a 200 mu m core multimode fiber. By recording the digital hologra ...

A nonlinear optical plasmonic core-shell nanocavity is demonstrated as an efficient, subwavelength coherent light source through second-harmonic generation. The nonlinear optical plasmonic nanocavity incorporates a noncentrosymmetric medium, which utilizes ...

The prospect of massive parallelism of optics enabling fast and low energy cost operations is attracting interest for novel photonic circuits where 3-dimensional (3D) implementations have a high potential for scalability. Since the technology for data inpu ...

We presented a pneumatically tunable 2 x 2 optofluidic switch for on-chip light routing that was controlled by compressed air. The device was fabricated with an optically clear elastomer-polydimethylsiloxane ( PDMS)-by soft-lithography. The optical switchi ...

A device (1) and method for processing data comprises at least one input layer (2), at least one modulation layer (3), and at least one output layer (4). The input layer (2) is configured to receive at least one carrier signal (Sc). The modulation layer (3 ...

Computer generated optical volume elements have been investigated for information storage, spectral filtering, and imaging applications. Advancements in additive manufacturing (3D printing) allow the fabrication of multilayered diffractive volume elements ...

Lenses allow the formation of clear images in homogeneous linear media. Holography is an alternative imaging method, but its use is limited to cases in which it provides an advantage, such as three-dimensional imaging. In nonlinear media, lenses no longer ...

Multimode optical fibers potentially allow the transmission of larger amounts of information than their single mode counterparts because of their high number of supported modes. However, propagation of a light pulse through a multimode fiber suffers from s ...

Luminescent markers play a key role in imaging techniques for life science since they provide a contrast mechanism between signal and background. We describe a new type of marker using second harmonic generation (SHG) from noncentrosymmetric BaTiO3 nanocry ...

We describe various methods to process the data collected with a digital confocal microscope (DCM) in order to get more information than what we could get from a conventional confocal system. Different metrics can be extracted from the data collected with ...

We study second harmonic generation (SHG) from noncentrosymmetric nanocrystals under linearly polarized (LP) and circularly polarized (CP) excitations. Theoretical models are developed for SHG from nanocrystals under both plane-wave and focused excitations ...
