Despite numerous applications of physically-based models for incised landscapes, their applicability for overland flow on unchanneled surfaces is not known. This work challenges a widely used landscape evolution model for the case of non-uniform rainfall a ...

Hydropower production and other human activities change the natural flow regime of rivers (e.g., hydropeaking effects), in turn, impacting the riparian environment. Here we present an experiment conceived to investigate the response of forced offsets in wa ...

The eco-morphodynamic activity of large tropical rivers in South and Central America is analyzed to quantify the carbon flux from riparian vegetation to inland waters. We carried out a multi-temporal analysis of satellite data for all the largest rivers in ...

Solar photocatalysis has the potential to reduce chemical and microbial contaminants in water and make it safer for consumption in an effective and sustainable manner. This has been studied and proven well under laboratoryscale conditions. In our previous ...

Measured meteorological time series are frequently used to obtain information 8 about climate dynamics. We use time series analysis and nonlinear system identification 9 methods in order to assess outdoor-environment bioclimatic conditions starting from th ...

River restoration can enhance river dynamics, environmental heterogeneity and biodiversity, but the underlying processes governing the dynamic changes need to be understood to ensure that restoration projects meet their goals, and adverse effects are preve ...

The success of seedlings and rejuvenated woody debris growing on river bedforms depends on the resistance to uprooting by flow provided by their simple root architecture. Avena sativa and Medicago sativa seedlings were used in flume experiments as prototyp ...

We present a simple, vertically-explicit 2D model of river bank erosion that also takes the effect of sediment stabilization by plant roots into account. The model is solved in quasi-analytical form for an exemplary non-stationary hydrograph temporal signa ...

Known as "the hidden half", plant roots are fundamental contributors to the riparian ecosystem functioning. Roots show an extraordinary architectural complexity that recalls their remarkable ability to adapt to environmental heterogeneity, resources availa ...

The establishment of riparian pioneer vegetation is of crucial importance within river restoration projects. After germination or vegetative reproduction on river bars juvenile plants are often exposed to mortality by uprooting caused by floods. At later s ...

Coastal cities are facing a rise in groundwater levels induced by sea level rise, further triggering saturation excess flooding where groundwater levels reach the topographic surface or reduce the storage capacity of the soil, thus stressing the existing i ...

Water impoundment by dams strongly affects the river natural flow regime, its attributes and the related ecosystem biodiversity. Fostering the sustainability of water uses e.g., hydropower systems thus implies searching for innovative operational policies ...

In order to meet the growing demand for energy, the development of hydropower leads to an increase of the river exploitation by human activities. Thereby, water management has become a major issue in the energy transition. A better definition of the flow r ...

Water demand for hydropower production has been increasing along with a growing awareness of the importance of preserving riparian ecosystems and their biodiversity. Some Cantons in Switzerland have begun replacing the inadequate concept of Minimum Flow Re ...

We quantify the synchronization between snowfall and natural avalanches in relation to terrain properties at the detachment zone. We analyze field statistics of 549 avalanche events in terms of slope, aspect, timing, coordinate, and release area, identifie ...

Coastal urban environments are facing an increasing risk of flooding from both surface water and groundwater due to globally elevated water levels, causing substantial socio-economic damages, threatening livelihoods, and hindering economic development. To ...

Riparian vegetation stabilizes sediment by its roots and henceforth impacts riparian morphodynamics. After germination or vegetative reproduction on river bars or islands, juvenile plants are exposed to a high risk of mortality due to uprooting by floods. ...

Systematic operation of water resources systems requires rules that consider the uncertainties affecting system performance. Here, stochastic dynamic programming (SDP) is used to structure and solve a full-scale surface and groundwater conjunctive use mode ...

We investigate vegetation uprooting by flow for Avena sativa seedlings with stem-to-sediment size ratio close to unity and vanishing obstacle-induced scouring. By inducing parallel riverbed erosion within an experimental flume, we measure the time-to-uproo ...

We investigate the influence of vegetation on river morphological instabilities using an analytical framework. We first discuss the important role of the hydrological (flooding frequency) and biological (vegetation development rate) timescales. As long as ...
