Al/SiC composites with volume fractions of SiC between 0.55 and 0.71 were made from identical tapped and vibrated powder preforms by squeeze casting (SC) and by two different setups for gas pressure infiltration (GPI), one that allows short (1-2 min) liqui ...

The work needed to mechanically drive molten metal into a porous solid preform when producing a composite material by infiltration can significantly exceed the energy change required for thermodynamically reversible infiltration. We measure, by quantitativ ...

The thermal conductivity of aluminum matrix composites having a high volume fraction of SiC particles is investigated by comparing data for composites fabricated by infiltrating liquid aluminum into preforms made either from a single particle size, or by m ...

We present dynamic measurement of drainage curves in two systems having relevance to metal matrix composite processing, namely SiC/Al and SiC/Al-12.2at%Si. Data show that liquid/solid chemical reactions that cause a lowering of the contact angle do indeed ...

Aluminum matrix composites reinforced with mixtures of diamond and SiC particles of equal size were produced by gas pressure assisted liquid metal infiltration. Replacing SiC gradually by diamond particles results in a steady increase of thermal conductivi ...

Drainage curves (plots of the non-wetting fluid saturation versus applied pressure) for infiltration of SiC particle preforms with Al and Al-12.2 at.% Si are measured at 1023 K (750 degrees C) with a pressure infiltration apparatus adapted for direct track ...

A new technique is proposed for the direct measurement of capillary forces in systems of relevance to the infiltration processing of metal matrix composites. Capable of handling melt temperatures up to 1500 K and infiltration pressures up to 20 MPa, the te ...

The high-temperature wettability of AlN particle preforms with pure molten Cu, Al and Ph is quantified by means of drainage curves measured during pressure infiltration. By integrating the drainage curves obtained in this study, the work of immersion for e ...
