The development of more sustainable material solutions is one of the key challenges today. New materials are subject to an overall risk assessment of which their impact on the environment is an important aspect. The biodegradability of a material may suppo ...

Post-polymerization modification is a powerful strategy to endow polymers with functional groups that cannot be incorporated via direct polymerization. This manuscript explores the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) of p ...

This manuscript reports a new strategy to guide the chemical solution deposition of thin, microstructured metal films. The proposed strategy is based on the use of poly(2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl ammonium chloride) (PMETAC) brushes grown via surface-initiate ...

This article discusses the synthesis and properties of dendritic and hyperbranched polyamides. The first part of the article focuses on peptide dendrimers and starts with providing an overview of the synthetic pathways that have been used to prepare dendri ...

Cellular uptake and intracellular trafficking of polymer conjugates or polymer nanoparticles is typically monitored using fluorescence-based techniques such as confocal microscopy. While these methods have provided a wealth of insight into the internalizat ...

Polymer brushes are thin polymer films that consist of densely grafted, chain-end tethered polymers. These thin polymer films can be produced either by anchoring presynthesized chain-end functional polymers to the surface of interest ("grafting to"), or by ...

Polymer nanomedicines are very attractive to improve the delivery of chemotherapeutics. Polymer conjugates and other polymer-based nanocarriers allow to increase plasma half-life and drug bioavailability and can also be guided toward tumors using passive a ...

Modification of bone implant materials with biofunctional surfaces that facilitate osteoblast adhesion and promote matrix mineralization is an attractive strategy to improve osseointegration. This manuscript discusses the preparation and properties of RGD ...

Surface-initiated polymerization represents a versatile strategy to modify a diverse range of materials with thin, functional polymer coatings. While in many cases the desired functional groups can be directly incorporated via (co)polymerization of the app ...

Peptides and proteins represent an emerging class of powerful therapeutics. Peptide and protein nanogels are attractive carriers for the transport and delivery of biologically active peptides and proteins because they allow essentially quantitative encapsu ...

This manuscript reports on the post-polymerization modification of poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) and PGMA-co-poly(2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PGMA(x)-co-PDEAEMA(y)) (co)polymer brushes prepared via surface-initiated atom transfer radical poly ...

The structure and the associated dynamics of a series of poly(?-benzyl-L-glutamate)-b-poly(dimethyl siloxane)-b-poly(?-benzyl-L-glutamate) (PBLG-b-PDMS-b-PBLG) triblock copolymers were investigated using small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering, NMR, transmi ...

The site-specific surface modification of colloidal substrates, yielding "patchy" nanoparticles, is a rapidly expanding area of research as a result of the new complex structural hierarchies that are becoming accessible to chemists and materials scientists ...

Although biopolymers and synthetic polymers share many common features, each of these two classes of materials is also characterized by a distinct and very specific set of advantages and disadvantages. Combining biopolymer elements with synthetic polymers ...

Surface-initiated controlled radical polymerization is a powerful strategy to tailor the chemical and physical surface properties of materials. This article highlights recent work from the author's laboratory in which surface-initiated atom transfer radica ...

Polypeptides derived from naturally occurring a-amino acids have emerged as a unique and versatile family of bio-inspired biomaterials that can be tailor-made for varying biomedical applications such as controlled drug release, gene delivery, tissue engine ...

Phage display is a powerful tool for the selection of highly affine, short peptide ligands. While originally primarily used for the identification of ligands to proteins, the scope of this technique has significantly expanded over the past two decades. Pha ...
