In the past decades, polymeric nanoparticles have emerged as a most promising and viable technology platform for targeted and controlled drug delivery. As vehicles, ideal nanoparticles are obliged to possess high drug loading levels, deliver drug to the sp ...

Thin, thermoresponsive polymer coatings that allow to reversibly modulate cell adhesion and detachment are attractive substrates for cell sheet engineering. Usually, this is accomplished by applying thin poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) coatings, which ...

Cells are attractive carriers for the transport and delivery of nanoparticulate cargo. The use of cell-based carriers allows one to enhance control over the biodistribution of drug-loaded polymers and polymer nanoparticles. One key element in the developme ...

There is a need for coatings for biomedical devices and implants that can prevent the attachment of fungal pathogens while allowing human cells and tissue to appose without cytotoxicity. Here, the authors study whether a poly(2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate) (P ...

Upon exposure to a good solvent, polymer brushes prepared via surface-initiated polymerization can undergo degrafting via cleavage of bonds that anchor the polymer tethers to the underlying substrate. As polymer brushes are often used in a solvent swollen ...

This manuscript describes a versatile, yet experimentally facile, method for producing libraries of polymer coated (core-shell type) gold nanoparticles. The synthetic principle relies on two, sequential postmodification reactions, which ensures homogeneity ...

In this study, the residue-selective modification of proteins with polymers at arginine residues is reported. The difficulty in modifying arginine residues lies in the fact that they are less reactive than lysine residues. Consequently, typical chemo-selec ...

The development of sustainable plastics from abundant renewable feedstocks has been limited by the complexity and efficiency of their production, as well as their lack of competitive material properties. Here we demonstrate the direct transformation of the ...

Polymers containing ester bonds are ubiquitous. Often, these materials are mechanically challenged, which impacts their stability and degradation. While the accelerative effect of force on the degradation of polyester polymers is well recognized, little is ...

Rapid adhesion between tissue and synthetic materials is relevant to accelerate wound healing and to facilitate the integration of implantable medical devices. Most frequently, tissue adhesives are applied as a gel or a liquid formulation. This manuscript ...

Hydrophilic/hydrophobic patterning is a powerful strategy to control folding in non-natural polymers/oligomers. In this contribution, we present a novel strategy for the preparation of alternating hydrophilic/hydrophobic patterned non-natural peptide folda ...

Hyperbranched polyesters are among the most common hyperbranched polymers. One of the interesting features of hyperbranched polyesters is that they contain unreacted hydroxyl and carboxylic acid groups at the linear and terminal structural units, which can ...

Lysine-based polycations are widely used as nonviral carriers for gene delivery. This manuscript reports the results of a comparative study on the in vitro cytotoxicity of a library of three structural polylysine variants, namely, linear polylysine (LPL), ...

Aim: Treatment of sensorineural hearing loss could be advanced using novel drug carriers such as hyperbranched polylysine (HBPL) or lipid nanocapsules (LNCs). This study examined HBPL and LNCs for their cellular uptake and possible toxicity in vitro and in ...

Peptides derived from the HR1 or HR2 regions of the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein gp41 have been shown to be effective inhibitors to prevent virus-host cell membrane fusion. These peptide drugs, however, suffer from relatively short plasma half-lives and are ...

Novel amphiphilic multi-arm star-block copolymers with a hyperbranched core, a hydrophobic inner shell, and a hydrophilic outer shell have been prepared from a commercial hyperbranched polyester macroinitiator by ring-opening polymerization of -caprolacton ...

Proteins have been modified with polymers in diverse manners over the past 30 years. However, while proteins have been used to prepare many functional constructs, they are sensitive biomolecules and their bioactivity can be either positively or negatively ...

In this Article, we studied the surface immobilization of five organic-acid-modified atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiators based on salicylic acid, catechol, phthalic acid, and m- and p-benzoic add on alumina, and we also investigated the ...

Densely grafted, hydrophilic polymer brushes produced via surface-initiated controlled radical polymerization have been shown to undergo degrafting upon exposure to aqueous media. This degrafting process has been proposed to involve swelling-induced, mecha ...

Tight regulation of blood glucose levels of diabetic patients requires durable and robust continuous glucose sensing schemes. This manuscript reports the fabrication of ultrathin, phenylboronic acid (PBA) functionalized polymer brushes that swell upon gluc ...
