We have developed a new tool that makes it possible for people with zero programming experience to intentionally and meaningfully explore the latent space of a GAN. We combine a number of methods from the literature into a single system that includes multi ...

In the Republic of Kazakhstan, the transition from Cyrillic towards Latin alphabet raises challenges to teach the whole population in writing the new script. This paper presents a CoWriting Kazakh system that aims to implement an autonomous behavior of a s ...

We describe an ambient awareness tool, named Lantern, designed for supporting the learning process in recitation sections, (i.e., when students work in small teams on the exercise sets with the help of tutors). Each team is provided with an interactive lam ...

This project incorporates modular robots as building blocks for furniture that moves and self-reconfigures. The reconfiguration is done using dynamic connection / disconnection of modules and rotations of the degrees of freedom. This paper introduces a new ...

Lecture videos are the major components in MOOCs. It is common for MOOC analytics researchers to model video behaviors in order to identify at-risk students. Much of the work emphasized prediction. However, we have little empirical understanding about thes ...

Recent studies with children have pointed out the importance of spatial thinking as an essential factor in determining later success in STEM-related fields. The current study explores the potential of using embodied activities with robots to aid the develo ...

While robots have been popular as a tool for STEM teaching, the use of robots in other learning scenarios is novel. The field of HRI has started to report on how to make effective robots usable in educational contexts. However, many challenges remain. For ...

In this paper, we examined the effect of knowledge interdependence among co-learners on knowledge convergence outcomes. Prior to collaboration, two partners read the same text in the independent condition while each of them read one of two complementary te ...

In order to collaborate with humans, robots are often provided with a Theory of Mind (ToM) architecture. Such architectures can be evaluated by humans perception of the robot's adaptations. However, humans sensitivities to these adaptations are not the one ...

Persuasive social robots have the ability to influence human behaviour through social interaction, which makes them a valuable technological solution for all applications aiming to support a person's behaviour change. The recently proposed Child-Robot Rela ...

There are a variety of CSCL scripts that offer different levels of flexibility, ranging from high-structured guidance towards low-rigidity support. This study is grounded in the view that scripts should be designed with a certain degree of structuredness, ...

Gamified rehabilitation tackles the problem of keeping patients engaged in, and motivated to do physical rehabilitation to improve its efficacy. However, with respect to standard rehabilitation, patients are freer to move about and may compensate their mot ...

Interactive tabletops are gaining increased attention from CSCL researchers. This paper analyses the relation between this technology and teaching and learning processes. At a global level, one could argue that tabletops convey a socio-constructivist flavo ...

Tangible User Interfaces (TUIs) offer the potential to facilitate collaborative learning in new ways. This paper presents an empirical study that investigated the effects of a TUE in a classroom setting on task performance and learning outcomes. In the tan ...

Studies carried out in classroom-based learning context, have consistently shown a positive relation between students' conscientiousness and their academic success. We hypothesize that time management and regularity are main constructing blocks of students ...

Building over algorithms previously developed for digital pens, this article introduces a novel 2D localization technique for mobile robots, based on simple printed patterns. This method combines high absolute accuracy (below 0.3mm), unlimited scalability, ...

Measuring ``how much the human is in the interaction'' -- the level of engagement -- is instrumental in building effective interactive robots. Engagement, however, is a complex, multi-faceted cognitive mechanism that is only indirectly observable. This art ...

MOOCs have traditionally been seen as providing an individual learning experience, however there is an increasing trend towards enabling social learning in MOOCs. To make online learning at scale more social and collaborative, some MOOCs have introduced co ...

Should we judge the quality of the class by the grades the students and teacher get at the end of the semester or how the group collaborated during the semester towards acquiring new knowledge? Up until recently, the later approach was all too inaccessible ...

Moving from steam and waterpower, electricity and assembly lines, and computerization, to the adoption of cyber-physical systems, the Internet of Things and the Internet of Systems executed as intelligent machines, the world now dives into a new era called ...
