Around 3/4 of global resources are currently consumed in urban settlements, with corresponding adverse environmental consequences. According to population forecasts this situation will worsen in the coming years. It is therefore imperative that we understa ...

This paper describes the results of initial experiments to apply computational algorithms to explore a large parameter space containing many variables in the search for an optimal solution for the sustainable design of an urban development using a potentia ...

In order to improve the sustainability of new and existing urban settlements it is desirable to maximise the utilisation of the solar energy incident on the building envelope, whether by passive or active means. To this end we have coupled a multi-objectiv ...

In this paper we discuss progress that has been made in modelling of urban resource flows to support urban designers to optimise the sustainability of their design and planning proposals. In particular we consider models of (i) resource availability, (ii)e ...

Outdoor human comfort is an important factor in the evaluation of the liveability of a city as well as for promoting people’s health and well-being. In hot arid climates in particular, urban planning and design can considerably impact the day-to-day therma ...

As research in building energy demand simulation is reaching maturity, there is now a growing interest in the evaluation of the energy need of larger and/or pre-existing urban areas [1, 2, 3], to evaluate the energy performance associated with alternative ...

The precise daylighting simulation in buildings can potentially contribute to designers’ and occupants’ smart utilization of it. The traditional method of employing sky models was indicated with noticeable errors in transient lighting simulation for comple ...

In this paper we describe a new methodology for optimising building and urban geometric forms for the utilisation of solar irradiation, whether by passive or active means. For this we use a new evolutionary algorithm(a hybrid CMA-ES/HDE algorithm) to searc ...

The increasing popularity of parametric design tools goes hand in hand with the use of building performance simulation (BPS) tools from the early design phase. However, current methods require a significant computational time and a high number of parameter ...

The implementation of Complex Fenestration Systems (CFS) in the day-to-day life by practitioners, such as lighting designers, architects and façade makers is not an easy task. However, computer design tools can reinforce their usage through the determinati ...

In the present century, for the first time in history, the urban population overpassed the rural one. Cities are growing, and their impact on the world energy balance is significant. Consequently, a sustainable urban environment focusing on the reduction o ...

Visual comfort is a key element at work places and at home. Besides task illuminance and color rendering it is the indoor light distribution, which strongly impacts visual comfort. We aimed to show possible relations between subjective and objective visual ...

The increase of the world's population leads to an urgent need of radical measures to diminish the energy footprint of humanity. This study considers the realisation of an optimal Masterplan in energy terms for the new EPFL Research Centre in Ras A1 Khaima ...

The bidirectional transmittance distribution function (BTDF), which is used to characterize the light transmission of a complex fenestration system (CFS), commonly involves bulky volume of data that can be a challenge to data storage and transmission in li ...

The increase of the urban population and the climate change are issues that scientists and stakeholders are facing nowadays; in this optic a sustainable design should address buildings, and all the physical phenomena that interact with them, from the urban ...

An accurate daylighting simulation can potentially improve the quality of pre-planing buildings and regulating daylighting to achieve the goal of green buildings. However, standard sky models can hardly reproduce real skies in real-time for a specific loca ...

This paper presents a novel method to study how well non-imaging daylight collectors pipe diffuse daylight into long horizontal funnels for illuminating deep buildings. Forward ray tracing is used to derive luminous intensity distributions curves (LIDC) of ...

There is an increasing interest in the use of computer algorithms to identify combinations of parameters which optimise the energy performance of buildings. For such problems, the objective function can be multi-modal and needs to be approximated numerical ...

The recent AR5 report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has again stressed on the need for mitigation and adaptation measures to tackle issues related to climate change. Tackling future urban planning and energy efficiency in the building ...

Studies have shown that the exposure to daylight can have substantial visual/non-visual benefits for building occupants. To optimise daylighting provision while maintaining a comfortable visual environment, daylighting control systems have been investigate ...
