Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) offer new opportunities for wildlife monitoring, with several advantages over traditional field-based methods. They have readily been used to count birds, marine mammals and large herbivores in different environments, tasks ...

The tick Ixodes ricinus is the vector of various pathogens, including Chlamydiales bacteria, which potentially cause respiratory infections. In this study, we modeled the spatial distribution of I. ricinus and associated Chlamydiales over Switzerland from ...

Coral reefs are suffering a major decline due to the environmental constraints imposed by climate change. Over the last 20 years, three major coral bleaching events occurred in concomitance with anomalous heatwaves, provoking a severe loss of coral cover w ...

Past studies conducted in urban areas analyzed the impact of the presence of green spaces on public health, and highlighted in particular the psychological benefits of interacting with nature. To investigate a supposed relationship between overweight and d ...

Ecosystems are the stage on which the play of evolution is acted. Inferring evolutionary processes from the spatial and temporal genetic patterns they produce in populations is challenging because ecosystems are highly complex, spatially structured, and te ...

Detecting adaptive loci in the genome is essential as it gives the possibility to understand what proportion of a genome or which genes are under the pressure of natural selection. In this paper, we used a Spatial Analysis Method (SAM) recently developed t ...

East Coast fever (ECF) is a fatal sickness affecting cattle populations of eastern, central, and southern Africa. The disease is transmitted by the tick Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, and caused by the protozoan Theileria parva parva, which invades host lym ...

Background During the past decades, neutral DNA markers have been extensively employed to study demography, population genetics and structure in livestock, but less interest has been devoted to the evaluation of livestock adaptive potential through the ide ...

Background: Evidence suggests that sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) intake frequency is positively associated with the risk of obesity and diabetes. We aimed to identify populations and areas in high need for interventions to reduce SSB consumption using a f ...

OBJECTIVE Body mass index (BMI) may cluster in space among adults and be spatially dependent. Whether and how BMI clusters evolve over time in a population is currently unknown. We aimed to determine the spatial dependence of BMI and its 5-year evolution i ...

As anomalous heat waves are causing the widespread decline of coral reefs worldwide, there is an urgent need to identify coral populations tolerant to thermal stress. Heat stress adaptive potential is the degree of tolerance expected from evolutionary proc ...

Occurrence of bacteria belonging to the order Chlamydiales was investigated for the first time in common toad (Bufo bufo) tadpole populations collected from 41 ponds in the Geneva metropolitan area, Switzerland. A Chlamydiales-specific Real-Time PCR was us ...

GIS is an interdisciplinary technology able to support high-level thinking and spatial reasoning. It allows students to visualize complex real world problems, and supports multiple modes of learning. But GIS remain unused at the primary school level. Indee ...

BackgroundThe need for effective public health surveillance systems to track virus spread for targeted interventions was highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic. It spurred an interest in the use of spatiotemporal clustering and genomic analyses to identi ...

SARS-CoV-2 spreads via close contact during daily activities, forming clusters of cases mainly in households and workplaces. A crucial challenge to contain the spread lies in the early detection of these outbreak clusters, and the localisation and isolatio ...

Understanding genetic basis of adaptation is of key importance, especially to insure food supply for present and future populations. Cultivated plants and livestock animals are subjected to high selection pressure due to climate change, increasing food nee ...

Coral reefs are under threat and innovative management strategies are urgently required. However, discoveries from innovative fields of coral reef research are rarely transposed in practical conservation actions. This is mainly due to the difficulties in k ...

Landscape ecologists and resource conservation managers increasingly need geo-referenced data but are not trained to efficiently use Geographical Information Systems together with appropriate geo-environmental information and spatial analysis approaches. I ...

Livestock conservation is changing rapidly in light of policy developments, climate change and diversifying market demands. The last decade has seen a step change in technology and analytical approaches available to define and manage Farm Animal Genetic Re ...

The application of geocomputation to the field of landscape genomics (Manel et al. 2010) permits to carry out demanding computational tasks that recently emerged because of the advent of large Next-Generation Sequencing data. When investigating the genetic ...
