Significance: Fluorescence guidance is used clinically by surgeons to visualize anatomical and/or physiological phenomena in the surgical field that are difficult or impossible to detect by the naked eye. Such phenomena include tissue perfusion or molecula ...

In a turbid medium such as biological tissue, near-infrared optical tomography (NIROT) can image the oxygenation, a highly relevant clinical parameter. To be an efficient diagnostic tool, NIROT has to have high spatial resolution and depth sensitivity, fas ...

The invention relates to an Imaging sensor device in a stacked arrangement comprising: - a pixel array tier comprising a plurality of pixel segments each having a plurality of pixels for photon detection each providing a digital pixel output; - a processin ...

We report on the first implementation of a single photon avalanche diode (SPAD) in 130 nm complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) technology. The SPAD is fabricated as p+/n-well junction with octagonal shape. A guard ring of p-well around the p+ anod ...

Advances in high-speed imaging techniques have opened new possibilities for capturing ultrafast phenomena such as light propagation in air or through media. Capturing light in flight in three-dimensional xyt space has been reported based on various types o ...

Quantum computers require classical electronics to ensure fault-tolerant operation. To address compactness and scalability, it was proposed to implement such electronics as integrated circuits operating at cryogenic temperatures close to those at which qua ...

The eyes of arthropods, such as those found in bees and dragonflies, are sophisticated 3D vision tools that are composed of an array of directional microlenses. Despite the attempts in achieving artificial panoramic vision by mimicking arthropod eyes with ...

Recently we have proposed a new image device called the gigavision camera. The main feature of this camera is that the pixels have a binary response. The response function of a gigavision sensor is non-linear and similar to a logarithmic function, which ma ...

Fast timing in ToF-PET improves the signal-to-noise ratio for better patient comfort through either a lower dose or a shorter scan time. Recent clinical PET scanners using lutetium-based crystals, like LYSO, reach a coincidence time resolution (CTR) of aro ...

Temporal photon correlation measurement, instrumental to probing the quantum properties of light, typically requires multiple single photon detectors. Progress in single photon avalanche diode (SPAD) array technology highlights their potential as high-perf ...

We describe a single chip approach to time resolved fluorescence measurements based on time correlated single photon counting. Using a single complementary metal oxide silicon (CMOS) chip, bump bonded to a 4 × 16 array of AlInGaN UV micro-pixellated light-e ...

Scintillating fibre detectors combine sub-mm resolution particle tracking, precise measurements of the particle stopping power and sub-ns time resolution. Typically, fibres are read out with silicon photomultipliers (SiPM). Hence, if fibres with a few hund ...

A cryogenic broadband low noise amplifier (LNA) for quantum applications based on a standard 40-nm CMOS technology is reported. The LNA specifications are derived from the readout of semiconductor quantum bits at 4.2 K, whose quantum information signals ar ...

This paper presents the RF characterization and modeling of a 22nm FDSOI technology down to 3.3K for quantum computing applications. The equivalent small-signal components are extracted analytically and automatically from the de-embedded two-port Y -parame ...

An integrated circuit fabricated using industry-standard 40 nm complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor technology can combine silicon quantum devices, digital addressing and analogue multiplexed dispersive readout electronics. ...

We propose a technique to localize computation in Instruction Set Extensions (ISEs) that are clocked at very high speed with respect to the processor. In order to save power, data to and from Custom Instruction Units (CIUs) is synchronized via an optical s ...

A handheld probe for direct positron detection based on scintillators coupled to silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) is presented in this paper. The battery-powered system is optimised for intra-operative use. It is fully sterilisable and wirelessly connected ...

This paper introduces a mathematical model to evaluate fast and cost-effective 3D image sensors based on single photon detectors. The model will help engineers evaluate design parameters based on operating conditions and system performance. Ranging is base ...

In this paper we propose to eliminate all data and control pads generally present in conventional chips and to replace them with a new type of ultra-compact, low power optical interconnect implemented almost entirely in CMOS. The proposed scheme enables en ...

3Dstacked CMOS SPAD based image sensors hold the promise for better sensitivity and more functionality per pixel. The technology enables to separate detection from computation onto different chips, or tiers, that are stacked onto one another. One advantage ...
