Novel electrochromic glazing technology has been identified as an emerging option for reducing cooling and lighting electricity demand. As this technology is particularly promising for office building we assess the related technical energy saving potential ...

Wavelength selective coatings are of common use in order to enhance the efficiency of devices heated by radiation such as solar thermal collectors. The use of suitable materials and the optimization of coating layer thicknesses are advisable ways to maximi ...

Based on the results of a European survey on architectural integration quality, the paper presents a systematic analysis of the facade integration potential of solar thermal collectors provided by Swiss manufacturers, concentrating on glazed flat plates, u ...

In order to reduce the energy consumption of buildings, modern windows include metal-containing coatings. These coatings strongly attenuate the microwaves used for mobile communications. Here, we present a novel approach to improve radio signal transmissio ...

Modulating the electronic structure of atomically dispersed active sites is promising to boost catalytic activity but is challenging to achieve. Here we show a cooperative Ni single-atom-on-nanoparticle catalyst (NiSA/NP) prepared via direct solid-state py ...

Metal–oxide–semiconductor junctions are the building blocks of modern electronics and can provide a variety of functionalities, from memory to computing. The technology, however, faces constraints in terms of further miniaturization and compatibility with ...

The integrated performance assessment of buildings can orient their design in the early stages. Despite the wide availability of physics simulation-based, data-driven, and hybrid techniques it is often difficult to rely on a single, appropriate technique t ...

The light diffusion of hand lay-up glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) laminates was investigated with a spectrophotometric set-up using an integrating sphere. Reinforcement weights of the laminates ranged from 410 to 3280 g/m2 and fiber volume fractions ...

Hydroxide-exchange membrane fuel cells can potentially utilize platinum-group-metal (PGM)-free electrocatalysts, offering cost and scalability advantages over more developed proton-exchange membrane fuel cells. However, there is a lack of non-precious elec ...

Overheating and the resulting stagnation of solar thermal collectors is a common problem even in central European latitudes. During stagnation, high temperatures lead to water evaporation, glycol degradation and stresses in the collector with increasing va ...

Multi layered chrome-free black selective surfaces for solar thermal energy conversion were produced by a low-cost sol gel dip-coating method. The optical properties of the Cu-Co-Mn-Si-O based nanocrystalline thin films have been characterized by spectroph ...

With the purpose of reducing the heating energy in buildings, it is common practice to install energy-efficient windows to increase the thermal insulation of a façade. These insulating glass units (IGIJ) include a thin silver coating acting as an infrared ...

We report the fabrication, modeling and characterization of novel microwave tunable capacitors based on the metal-insulator transition (MIT) of Vanadium Dioxide (VO2) as a future replacement solution for microelectromechanical capacitive switches. We prese ...

The parameters of thermal evaporation and magnetron sputtering deposition were optimized for fabrication of vanadium dioxide thin films. The O2 partial pressure during film deposition is critical for obtaining a pure VO2 phase. Thermochromic V1−xWxO2 (x = ...

Silicon oxide films containing CdS quantum dots have been deposited on glass substrates by a sol–gel dip-coating process. Hereby the CdS nanocrystals are grown during the thermal annealing step following the dip-coating procedure. Total hemispherical trans ...

A combined PVD/PECVD process for the vacuum deposition of titaniumcontainingamorphoushydrogenatedcarbonfilms is described. Elemental compositions of the deposited films have been determined by in situ core level photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The long-t ...

Hydroxide exchange membrane fuel cells are promising as an energy conversion technology, but require platinum group metal electrocatalysts for their application. A Ni-based hydrogen oxidation reaction catalyst is now shown to exhibit unprecedented electroc ...

The dimensional stability of a UV printed polymer microstructure for a novel glazing system for seasonal regulation and daylighting based on a periodic array of parabolic micro-mirrors is investigated. The objectives of the work are: i) to analyze the dime ...

Advanced optical ray tracing software, CFSpro, was developed for the study and optimization of complex fenestration systems (CFSs). Using an algorithm mixing 2D and 3D approaches, accurate computation of large numbers of rays in extruded geometries can be ...

While the influence of a glare source's spectrum on sensitivity to discomfort glare has been demonstrated repeatedly under electric light conditions, it has not yet been studied under actual daylit conditions. To investigate the influence of spectral alter ...
