Silicon photonics has emerged as a mature technology that is expected to play a key role in critical emerging applications, including very high data rate optical communications, distance sensing for autonomous vehicles, photonic-accelerated computing, and ...

Integrated photonics will play a key role in quantum systems as they grow from few-qubit prototypes to tens of thousands of qubits. The underlying optical quantum technologies can only be realized through the integration of these components onto quantum ph ...

Diamond is an exceptional material that has recently seen a remarkable increase in interest in academic research and engineering since high-quality substrates became commercially available and affordable. Exploiting the high refractive index, hardness, las ...

A new electro‐optic phase shifter device architecture consisting of two lateral rail electrodes in doped silicon close to a waveguide with a liquid crystal cladding is demonstrated. Starting with a completed silicon photonics wafer of IMEC's iSiPP50G platf ...

Nanoelectromechanical (NEM) switches have the advantages of zero leakage current, abrupt switching characteristics, and harsh environmental capabilities. This makes them a promising component for digital computing circuits when high energy efficiency under ...

Photonic add-drop filters are crucial components for the implementation of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) in fiber-optic communication systems. The recent progress in photonic integration has shown the potential to integrate photonic add-drop filte ...

In large interferometric circuits on SOI-platforms a high number of phase tuners is required to control the flow of light. Furthermore, reconfigurable circuits rely on the control of the phase in each arm of a balanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) to create a 2×2 coupler with full control on the coupling and phase difference between the output ports [1]. Consequently, such circuits require a large amount of phase shifters densely integrated on the chip surface. To enable this, each phase shifter should

We report on single crystal diamond micro-disk resonators fabricated in bulk chemical vapor deposition diamond plates (3 mm x 3 mm x 0.15 mm) using a combination of deep reactive ion etching and Focused Ion Beam (FIB) milling. The resulting structures are ...

Integrated nanoelectromechanical (NEM) relays can be used instead of transistors to implement ultra-low power logic circuits, due to their abrupt turn off characteristics and zero off-state leakage. Further, realizing circuits with 4-terminal (4-T) NEM rel ...

We present a design for an analog phase shifter based on Silicon Photonic MEMS technology. The operation principle is based on a two-step parallel plate electrostatic actuation mechanism to bring a vertically movable suspended tapered waveguide in a first ...

We demonstrate the design, fabrication, and experimental characterization of near-field binary phase transmission diffractive optical elements (DOEs) in single crystal diamond. Top-hat and arbitrary pattern DOE beam shapers were numerically optimized using ...

The emerging fields of silicon (Si) photonic micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) and optomechanics enable a wide range of novel high-performance photonic devices with ultra-low power consumption, such as integrated optical MEMS phase shifters, tunable c ...

We report on the design, fabrication and optical performance of gain mirrors in single crystal diamond substrates for vertical external cavity surface emitting lasers (VECSELs). VECSELs have gained attention recently due to their potential for high emissio ...

We report on a 32 x 32 silicon photonic micro-electro-mechanical-system (MEMS) switch with gap-adjustable directional couplers. The switch is fabricated on 200-mm silicon-on-insulator wafers in a commercial complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) fo ...

Diamonds possess significant hardness and durability; however, any attempt to deform them typically leads to brittle fracture. In this study, we comprehensively characterize nanoscale diamond at elevated temperatures, using a combination of experimental an ...

The field of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) for photonic integrated circuits (PICs) is reviewed. This field leverages mechanics at the nanometer to micrometer scale to improve existing components and introduce novel functionalities in PICs. This rev ...

Large-scale photonic switches are essential devices for energy-and cost-efficient optical communication networks in cloud and data-intensive computing. Silicon photonics is an attractive platform for high-density photonic integrated circuits with low manuf ...

Photonic integrated circuits are becoming increasingly more complex, especially with the emergence of programmable photonic circuits. These require many tunable photonic elements, such as electro-optic phase shifters and tunable couplers. We will discuss o ...

We present a design for an on-chip MEMS-actuated Variable Optical Attenuator (VOA) based on Silicon Photonic MEMS technology. The VOA consists of 30 individual mechanically movable MEMS cantilevers, suspended over an integrated, 1 mu m wide bus waveguide, ...

Silicon photonic circuits are rapidly growing in complexity and spreading to new applications. However, programmable circuits consume much power and require active electrical interfaces. For the first time, we demonstrate a nonvolatile photonic MEMS pi-pha ...
