As proposed in several design standards for structural concrete, including Eurocode 2 (EN:1992-1-1:2004) and fib's Model Code 2010, the shear design of slender members with shear reinforcement can be performed by means of consistent models based on suitabl ...

Detailed investigations on the role of the shear transfer actions in members without transverse reinforcement have traditionally been limited due to the possibilities offered by conventional measurement techniques. The main difficulty of such conventional ...

The shear resistance of elements without stirrups has mainly been investigated by test setups involving simply supported beams of constant thickness subjected to one- or two-point loading, and most of the formulas included in codes have been adjusted using ...

Aggregate interlocking is acknowledged as one of the most significant actions transferring shear forces in cracked concrete structures and has been investigated for several decades. Despite the many experimental programmes and previous efforts to develop m ...

Within the frame of the revision of the Eurocode 2 for concrete structures, the section devoted to strut-and-tie design has been up-dated to enhance its applicability, its consistency with other sections and its ease-of-use. As a result, a number of change ...

The load-carrying capacity of many reinforced concrete structures is governed by shear failures, occurring before reaching the flexural capacity of the member. For redundant systems, such as slabs subjected to concentrated loads, local shear failures (typi ...

Plastic bending of reinforcement bars against mandrels is the usual procedure to provide bends and hooks for steel reinforcement bars. Minimum mandrel diameters are usually given in to codes of practice, depending on the type of detail and diameter of the ...

The use of punching shear reinforcement is currently considered as one of the most convenient practices to enhance the punching shear strength and deformation capacity of slab-column connections in flat slabs. Intensive research has been performed in the l ...

For the design of SFRC members, the most fundamental material property is its post cracking residual tensile strength. When relying on physical models to describe structural behaviour under load, the material laws must first be accurately established. If t ...

In flat-slab frames, which are typically designed as secondary seismic structures, the shear failure of the slab around the column (punching failure) is typically the governing failure mode which limits the deformation capacity and can potentially lead to ...

In multi-storey buildings, columns are usually not continuous through the slabs to enhance ease of construction. Consequently, in slab–column joints, slabs have to carry column loads in addition to the shear and bending moments due to loads applied to the ...

The influence of plastic strains in the longitudinal reinforcement in presence of high shear forces in beams and slabs without stirrups was investigated performing a series of tests of eight ordinary reinforced concrete beams 8.4 meters long with 0.79% rei ...

Nowadays, reinforced concrete (RC) is one of the most widely spread construction materials: allowing to build robust and durable structures. Traditionally, due to cover requirements of the reinforcement and to casting and vibration needs, it has yet been a ...

Flat-slab column connections are susceptible to brittle failure, which lead to the necessity of improving ductility and ultimate strength. In case of edge connections, the behaviour at ultimate state is highly influenced by nonsymmetrical distribution of s ...

Code design of slab-column connections to resist seismically induced drifts is currently based on empirical relationships for both moment and deformation capacity. The results of tests on slab-column connections are however sensitive to the conception of the test setup. This paper presents a new setup configuration as well as first results of an experimental campaign carried out at EPFL. Within this campaign slabs without shear reinforcement will be subjected to constant vertical loads and increasing seismi

The stress field method is a technique based on the lower-bound theorem of plasticity that can be used for dimensioning, detailing and checking of structural concrete elements. Its use has been traditionally associated with the assumption of simplified (ri ...

A considerable number of flat slabs supported by columns need to be strengthened against punching shear. Reasons are increasing loads, construction or design errors, but also more stringent code requirements due to the increased knowledge gained in the pas ...

The results of a test series on the punching behavior of slabs with varying flexural reinforcement ratios and without transverse reinforcement are presented. The aim of the tests was to investigate the behavior of slabs failing in punching shear with low r ...
