Nanoelectromechanical systems constitute a class of devices lying at the interface between fundamental research and technological applications. Realizing nanoelectromechanical devices based on novel materials such as graphene allows studying their mechanic ...

The performance of transistors based on two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors is restricted by the poor interface quality between two-dimensional materials and conventional three-dimensional contacts. Transition-metal-dichalcogenide-based metal–semiconductor heterostructures have been developed to enhance device performance, but finding fabrication techniques that combine high-quality growth with scalability and broad applicability remains a challenge. Here we show that a method tha

2D semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides comprise an emerging class of materials with distinct properties, including large exciton binding energies that reach hundreds of millielectronvolts and valley-contrasting physics. Thanks to the van der Wa ...

Nanopores in two-dimensional (2D) membranes hold immense potential in single-molecule sensing, osmotic power generation, and information storage. Recent advances in 2D nanopores, especially on single-layer MoS2, focus on the scalable growth and manufacturi ...

The size of the sensing region in solid-state nanopores is determined by the size of the pore and the thickness of the pore membrane, so ultrathin membranes such as graphene and single-layer molybdenum disulphide could potentially offer the necessary spati ...

We report on measurements of the stiffness and breaking strength of monolayer MoS2, a new semiconducting analogue of graphene. Single and bilayer MoS2 is exfoliated from bulk and transferred to a substrate containing an array of microfabricated circular ho ...

Atomic force microscopy has been used to investigate the mechanical properties of microtubules. Method of Salvetat et al. [1], originally developed for measuring the Young's modulus of carbon nanotubes, has been extended to a biological system of similar geometry. Preliminary measurements of Young's modulus of microtubules in this configuration give a value of 74 MPa. Compression measurements on the same system give a value of 22 MPa, which is of the same order of magnitude, while values previously reported

Blue energy relies on the chemical potential difference between solutions of high and low ionic concentrations, potentially providing an independent energy source at estuaries around the world. The energy conversion relies on reverse electrodialysis via io ...

Dichalcogenides with the common formula MX2 are layered materials with electrical properties that range from semiconducting to superconducting. Here, we describe optimal imaging conditions for the optical detection of ultrathin, two-dimensional dichalcogen ...

Metal–oxide–semiconductor junctions are the building blocks of modern electronics and can provide a variety of functionalities, from memory to computing. The technology, however, faces constraints in terms of further miniaturization and compatibility with ...

Metallic two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are garnering significant attention for their ability to enhance device performance when used as 2D contacts with semiconducting 2D materials, as well as for their intriguing low-temperature properties, including superconductivity, magnetism, and charge density waves (CDWs). However, the advancement of both fundamental studies and practical applications has been hindered by challenges in synthesizing high-quality, large-area materials. I

Ultrathin nanopore membranes based on 2D materials have demonstrated ultimate resolution toward DNA sequencing. Among them, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) shows long-term stability as well as superior sensitivity enabling high throughput performance. The trad ...

CONSPECTUS: Atomic crystals of two-dimensional materials consisting of single sheets extracted from layered materials are gaining increasing attention. The most well-known material from this group is graphene, a single layer of graphite that can be extract ...

Extended efforts have been devoted to the study of strongly-interacting excitons and their dynamics, towards macroscopic quantum states of matter such as Bose-Einstein condensates of excitons and polaritons. Momentum-direct layer-hybridized excitons in transition metal dichalcogenides have attracted considerable attention due to their high oscillator strength and dipolar nature. However, the tunability of their interactions and dynamics remains unexplored. Here, we achieve an unprecedented control over the

Interactions among a collection of particles generate many-body effects in solids that result in striking modifications of material properties. The heavy carrier mass that yields strong interactions and gate control of carrier density over a wide range mak ...

Single-layer MoS2 is a newly emerging two-dimensional semiconductor with a potentially wide range of applications in the fields of nanoelectronics and energy harvesting. The fact that it can be exfoliated down to single-layer thickness, makes MoS2 interesting both for practical applications and for fundamental research, where the structure and crystalline order of ultrathin MoS2 will have a strong influence on electronic, mechanical and other properties. Here, we report on the transmission electron microsco

Two-dimensional materials (2DMs) have found potential applications in many areas of electronics, such as sensing, memory systems, optoelectronics, and power. Despite an intense experimental work, the literature is lacking of accurate modeling of nonvolatil ...
