Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) represent a class of semiconducting two-dimensional (2D) materials with exciting properties. In particular, defects in 2D-TMDs and their molecular interactions with the environment can crucially affect their physical ...

High-quality and large-scale growth of monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has caught intensive attention because of its potential in many applications due to unique electronic properties. Here, we report the wafer-scale growth of high-quality monolayer ...

Toward the large-area deposition of MoS2 layers, we employ metal–organic precursors of Mo and S for a facile and reproducible van der Waals epitaxy on c-plane sapphire. Exposing c-sapphire substrates to alkali metal halide salts such as KI or NaCl together ...

Large-area nanopore drilling is a major bottleneck in state-of-the-art nanoporous 2D membrane fabrication protocols. In addition, high-quality structural and statistical descriptions of as-fabricated porous membranes are key to predicting the corresponding ...

Two-dimensional (2D) materials are a new type of materials under intense study because of their interesting physical properties and wide range of potential applications from nanoelectronics to sensing and photonics. Monolayers of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides MoS2 or WSe2 have been proposed as promising channel materials for field-effect transistors. Their high mechanical flexibility, stability, and quality coupled with potentially inexpensive production methods offer potential advantages

Two-dimensional semiconductors such as MoS2 are an emerging material family with wide-ranging potential applications in electronics, optoelectronics, and energy harvesting. Large-area growth methods are needed to open the way to applications. Control over ...

Two-dimensional (2D) materials are a new class of materials with interesting physical properties and applications ranging from nanoelectronics to sensing and photonics. In addition to graphene, the most studied 2D material, monolayers of other layered mate ...

This thesis describes measurements of the mechanical properties on the nanoscale. Three different mesoscopic tubular objects were studied: MoS2 nanotubes, carbon nanotubes and microtubules. The main goal was to investigate the interplay between the fine structure of these objects and their mechanical properties. Measurements were performed by elastically deforming tubes deposited on porous substrates with the tip of an atomic force microscope. The first experimental part describes the mechanical characteriz

Atomically thin rhenium disulphide (ReS2) is a member of the transition metal dichalcogenide family of materials. This two-dimensional semiconductor is characterized by weak interlayer coupling and a distorted 1T structure, which leads to anisotropy in ele ...

Vanadium oxide nanotubes with a diameter of 20-100 nm and an aspect ratio of 50-100 were synthesized by hydrothermal method. Young's modulus of 20-80 GPa was obtained by bending measurements of individual nanotubes using an atomic force microscope. Electri ...

We have evaluated as-grown MoS2 crystals, epitaxially grown on a monocrystalline sapphire by chemical vapor deposition (CVD), with direct electronic band-structure measurements by energy-filtered k-space photoelectron emission microscopy performed with a c ...

Continuous tuning of material properties is highly desirable for a wide range of applications, with strain engineering being an interesting way of achieving it. The tuning range, however, is limited in conventional bulk materials that can suffer from plast ...

Devices based on two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors hold promise for the realization of compact and versatile on-chip interconnects between electrical and optical signals. Although light emitting diodes (LEDs) are fundamental building blocks for integrate ...

Atomically thin (2D) nanoporous membranes are an excellent platform for a broad scope of academic research. Their thickness and intrinsic ion selectivity (demonstrated for example in molybdenum disulfide-MoS2) make them particularly attractive for single-m ...

Chirality, a basic property of symmetry breaking, is crucial for fields such as biology and physics. Recent advances in the study of chiral systems have stimulated interest in the discovery of symmetry-breaking states that enable exotic phenomena such as s ...

Sunlight is widely seen as one of the most abundant forms of renewable energy, with photovoltaic cells based on pn junctions being the most commonly used platform attempting to harness it. Unlike in conventional photovoltaic cells, the bulk photovoltaic ef ...

Optical microcavities provide a powerful and versatile framework for manipulating the dynamics of photonic emission from optically active materials through light recirculation. Spatially indirect interlayer excitons (IXs) exhibit broad tunability of their ...

Two-dimensional (2D) materials such as monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) are extremely interesting for integration in nanoelectronic devices where they represent the ultimate limit of miniaturization in the vertical direction. Thanks to the presence of ...

Memory cells are an important building block of digital electronics. We combine here the unique electronic properties of semiconducting monolayer MoS2 with the high conductivity of graphene to build a 2D heterostructure capable of information storage. MoS2 ...

Excellent mechanical properties and the presence of piezoresistivity make single layers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) viable candidates for integration in nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS). We report on the realization of electromechanical ...
