We show that double-resonance spectra recorded during the simultaneous absorption of x-ray and microwave (MW) photons are a fingerprint of the perturbed electronic configuration of atomic species driven to ferromagnetic resonance. X-ray absorption measurem ...

We compare different growth methods with the aim of optimizing the long-range order of a graphene layer grown on Ru(0001). Combining chemical vapor deposition with carbon loading and segregation of the surface layer leads to autocorrelation lengths of 240 ...

Lanthanide atoms on surfaces are an exceptional platform for atomic-scale magnetic information storage. However, their potential as qubits remains unexplored due to the limited number of experimental setups that can coherently drive the spins of single ada ...

We combine spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy with quantum master equation analysis to investigate the spin dynamics of the single atom magnet Dy on graphene/Ir(111). By performing reading and writing experiments, we show that the strongly spin p ...

Nanomagnets of controlled size, organized into regular patterns open new perspectives in the fields of nanoelectronics, spintronics, and quantum computation. Self-assembling processes on various types of substrates allow designing fine-structured architect ...

We present a comprehensive study of Er(trensal) single-ion magnets deposited in ultrahigh vacuum onto metallic surfaces. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals that the molecular structure is preserved after sublimation, and that the molecules are physisorbed on Au(111) while they are chemisorbed on a Ni thin film on 0(100) single-crystalline surfaces. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements performed on Au(111) samples covered with molecular monolayers held at temperatures down to 4 K sugge

We present the first experimental determination of the intra-atomic exchange energy between the inner 4f and the outer 6s5d shells in rare-earth elements. Inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy on individual rare-earth atoms adsorbed on metal-supported ...

The magnetic properties and the atomic scale morphology of bimetallic two-dimensional nanoislands, epitaxially grown on fcc(111) metal surfaces, have been studied by means of Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect and Scanning Tunneling Microscopy. We investigate the ...

We combine x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), x-raymagnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and x-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD) data with first principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations and amultiorbital many-body Hamiltonian approach to u ...

We present a method to measure continuous-wave ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectra based on the core-level absorption of circularly polarized x rays. The technique is demonstrated by using a monochromatic x-ray beam incident on an yttrium-iron-garnet sam ...

The origin of (ferro)magnetic ordering in transition metal doped ZnO is a still open question. For applications it is fundamental to establish if it arises from magnetically ordered impurity clusters embedded into the semiconducting matrix or if it origina ...

We have studied Er(trensal) single -ion magnets adsorbed on graphene/Ru(0001), on graphene/Ir(111), and on bare Ru(0001) by scanning tunneling microscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. On graphene, the molecules self -assemble into dense and well -orde ...

We report on the magnetic properties of Dy atoms adsorbed on the (001) surface of SrTiO3. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism reveals slow relaxation of the Dy magnetization on a time scale of about 800 s at 2.5 K, unusually associated with an easy-plane mag ...

Iron atoms adsorbed on a Cu(111) surface and buried under polyphenyl dicarbonitrile molecules exhibit strongly spatial anisotropic Kondo features with directionally dependent Kondo temperatures and line shapes, as evidenced by scanning tunneling spectrosco ...

The interaction between the endohedral unit in the single-molecule magnet Dy2ScN@C-80 and a rhodium (111) substrate leads to alignment of the Dy 4f orbitals. The resulting orientation of the Dy2ScN plane parallel to the surface is inferred from comparison of the angular anisotropy of x-ray absorption spectra and multiplet calculations in the corresponding ligand field. The x-ray magnetic circular dichroism is also angle dependent and signals strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy. This directly relates geomet

The magnetic properties of a Mn-19 coordination cluster equipped with methylmercapto substituents on the organic ligands, [(Mn12Mn7II)-Mn-III(mu(4)-O)(8)(mu(3)-Cl)(7.7)(mu(3)-OMe)(0.3)(HLSMe)(12)(MeOH)(6)]Cl-2 center dot 27MeCN (Mn-19(SMe)) (H3LSMe = 2,6-bis(hydroxymethyl)-4-mercaptomethylphenol) deposited on Au(111) surfaces from solution, have been investigated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. The data reveal that in the submonolayer regime the molecules contain only

We report on the magnetic coupling between isolated Co atoms as well as small Co islands and Ni(111) mediated by an epitaxial graphene layer. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism and scanning tunneling microscopy combined with density functional theory calcul ...

Matter at the atomic-scale is inherently governed by the laws of quantum mechanics. This makes charges and spins confined to individual atoms-and interactions among them-an invaluable resource for fundamental research and quantum technologies alike. However, harnessing the inherent 'quantumness' of atomic-scale objects requires that they can be precisely engineered and addressed at the individual atomic level. Since its invention in the 1980s, scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) has repeatedly demonstrated

The observation of sharp atomiclike multiplet features is unexpected for individual 3d atoms adsorbed on transition-metal surfaces. However, we show by means of x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism that individual Fe atoms on Cu(111) exhibit such features. They are reminiscent of a low degree of hybridization, similar to 3d atoms adsorbed on alkali-metal surfaces. We determine the spin, orbital, and total magnetic moments, as well as magnetic anisotropy energy for the individu

We report on a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the magnetic anisotropy of Fe and Co ultrathin layers on strongly polarizable metal substrates. Monolayer (ML) films of Co and Fe on Rh(111) have been investigated in situ by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), magneto-optic Kerr effect, and scanning tunneling microscopy. The experiments show that both magnetic adlayers exhibit ferromagnetic order and enhanced spin and orbital moments compared to the bulk metals. The easy magnetizat
