For fatigue life estimation as well as for fatigue testing analysis of welded structures by local stresses approaches, the stress concentration factor (SCF) at the weld must be known. Full penetration butt welded joints are extensively used in steel struct ...

Hydropower plays a pivotal role in the socio-economic development of Bhutan where water resource is abundantly available and therefore several hydropower plants are being planned and a few under construction. However, with the presence of several potential ...

A rehabilitation scheme at the more than 100 year-old Fully hydro scheme, where the penstock had shown signs of ageing, has involved converting the original single power station into a cascade of three plants, which have been integrated in a municipal water supply system. This paper presents the main stages of the rehabilitation studies, the reasons for the solution adopted, as well as an overview of the construction challenges. The scheme is now nearing completion, with the last small plant scheduled to be

Hydropeaking is the water flow or level variations in rivers caused by hydropower exploitation. This phenomenon have negatives impacts on fauna and flora. Mitigation measures can lead to producing less and reduce production at the times that are most economically attractive. In a context where renewable energy production wishes to be increased and where operators wish to maintain their revenues, these measures are not satisfactory. This work aims to propose mitigation solution which keep production and flex

The authors present the current context for energy transition and hydropower development in Switzerland, summarizing the activities in the field of hydropower infrastructure research carried out over the past three years and presenting the development objectives for the coming four years. The focus is on increasing operational flexibility and winter production. The plan includes three large scale pilot projects, the first on recently commissioned small hydro schemes, the second on sediment release through t

Transient pressure waves in real pipe systems are affected by several phenomena not accounted for in the classic waterhammer theory. Damping mechanisms are differently manifested according to the material, configuration and existing features of pipe system ...

Reservoir sedimentation is known to be a key issue worldwide. One operational measure to deal with sediment accumulations is flushing; however, efficiency is often lacking. The goal of this study is thus to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of flush ...

When for steel liners of pressure tunnels and shafts high-strength steels are used, welded joints are subject to the risk of hydrogen induced cold-cracking in the base material. Longitudinal butt welded joints are critical regions as they are loaded transv ...

Electricity generation, water supply, flood protection, flow regulation and navigation are amongst the main services provided by reservoirs. Sedimentation affects the sustainability of reservoirs, by reducing their storage capacity, and increases the negat ...

Hydropower operations can cause hydropeaking particularly in the case of pumped storage systems located in mountainous regions. Due to the rapidly varying discharge conditions, hydropeaking leads to several problems such as stranding of fishes and inverteb ...

An accurate estimation of the stress in a steel liner is required for the design of steel-lined pressure shafts, both with regard to safety assessment of ageing steel-lined waterways of hydropower plants built in the 20th century, and for new projects whic ...
