Depending on their characteristics and management, man-made reservoirs can have a significant impact on the natural sediment continuity of rivers. We classify different reservoir types and describe potential risks for the dam and downstream river reach. Ou ...

The paper presents the analysis of fluid–structure interaction occurring during hydraulic transients in pipe coils by means of a four-equation model. The purpose is to understand and describe the effect of the coil movement on the transient wave. The four- ...

Energy recovery through local hydropower generation is a way of coping with high electricity expenditures in wastewater systems (WWS). Installing small hydropower plants within WWS is already in some countries eligible for incentive policy mechanisms to re ...

Reservoir sedimentation is a major concern in the operational management of dams and appurtenant structures. The increasing volume of sediments deposited in reservoirs leads to a loss of water storage, undermining the purpose itself of the dam for human us ...

Since the adoption of the "Energy Strategy 2050" by the Federal Council in 2017, Switzerland has been looking for new energy alternatives to the nuclear sector and ways to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, in particular by promoting the development of renewable energies. The national hydroelectric park, which represents 59% of total energy production, has an essential place in this context of upheaval in electricity supply. In the coming years, more and more existing power plants will come to the end of

Spillways are a requirement for dams’ safety, mainly preventing overtopping during floods. A common spillway solution involves plunging jets, which dissipate a considerable flow energy in the plunge pool. Energy dissipation has to occur in a controlled man ...

The present review paper aims at collecting and discussing the research work, numerical and experimental, carried out in the field of Fluid–Structure Interaction (FSI) in one-dimensional (1D) pressurized transient flow in the time-domain approach. Backgrou ...

Around 60% of Switzerland’s power production is provided by hydropower. Despite its numerous advantages, the high fluctuations in turbined discharges cause hydropeaking at downstream rivers. Due to the environmental impacts of hydropeaking on fauna and flora, the Swiss Federal Act on the Protection of Waters requires dam operators to put in place remediation measures for hydropeaking effects before the end of 2030. At the same time, the Energy Strategy 2050 and the decision on the progressive withdrawal fro

Increasing the flexibility of hydropower allows operators to produce at optimal time ranges, not only dependent on the demand flow but also on the price trends. However, the possibility to improve hydropower flexibility can be hindered when assets are mana ...

Taking advantage of the withdrawal of some glaciers, several new dams will eventually be constructed in Switzerland in the coming years as a part of the 2050 energy strategy. The Trift dam, located in Berner Oberlands in Switzerland, is one of these new pr ...

This study presents an experimental work on dynamic pressures at the bottom of a lined plunge pool that receives overflow rectangular impinging jets and aims at improving the design criteria for pool slabs. The experiments were conducted in a fairly large ...

The seismic performance of the Tsankov Kamak Dam is evaluated using a finite element approach in the time domain. The study investigates the impact of massless and massed foundation models, considering their influence on the dam's seismic response. The numerical model, developed in ANSYS, incorporates fluid-structure interaction, nonlinear interfaces, and the coupled damage-plasticity microplane model for mass concrete, and replaces the gated orifice spillways by interrupted upper arches. Effective earthqua

Sediment management in reservoirs situated in mountainous regions is a critical operational concern with direct implications in live storage sustainability and therefore in production revenues. The paper presents the main results of a physical model study ...

The response of concrete gravity dams under seismic loads is a major concern of dam safety assessment in earthquake-prone areas. This study focuses on the seismic analysis of the tallest non-overflow monolith of Pine Flat Dam. The paper presents results of ...

This paper focuses on the dynamics of fine sediments in reservoirs exposed to hydropower cascade or pumped-storage operations. The aim is at analysing the influence of parameters such as the flow inlet and flow outlet relative position, the jet hydrodynami ...

Hydropower (HP) is the backbone of the Swiss electricity system providing around 60 % (36 TWh/a) of the total electricity generated on a yearly average. With the planned phase-out of nuclear power plants, HP and other Renewable Energy Sources (RES) will ne ...

Dam heightening can provide large incremental positive impacts on storage with minimum incremental negative impacts, but requires deep knowledge of the structure and its foundation. Very high gravity dams are usually well studied and documented due to their importance and complexity. Such profound knowledge of the dam-reservoir-foundation system considerably reduces the uncertainty about site conditions already at an early stage of design. Furthermore, the availability of monitoring data and safety assessme

This investigation aims at assessing the fluid-structure interaction (FSI) occurring during hydraulic transients in straight pipeline systems fixed to anchor blocks. A two mode 4-equation model is implemented incorporating the main interacting mechanisms: ...

Uncontrolled scour is affecting multiple mobile dams. The plunge pool of the Chancy-Pougny barrage, located on the Rhone River bordering France and Switzerland, has recently been reported to develop in a potentially unfavourable direction after almost 100 ...

The present paper approaches fluid-structure interaction by means of a 4-equation model. Experimental data collected from a straight copper pipe-rig lying directly on the lab floor is used for the model validation in terms of wave shape, timing and damping ...
