Reaching and manipulating objects are crucial tasks that allow proactive interaction with our surroundings. However, these functions are lost after neurological disorders or traumatic events that cause hand paralysis. Neuroprosthetic technologies are medic ...

Spinal cord injury (SCI) severely impairs motor function and quality of life. Transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS) has emerged as a promising non-invasive neuromodulation technique to restore voluntary motor function by engaging spinal circuits below the lesion. While standard tonic tSCS with a single electrode at T11–T12 offers limited gait-specific selectivity, recent studies show that multi-electrode configurations can recruit better proximal and distal muscles on the ipsilateral side. However,

The human hand, with its intricate sensory capabilities, plays a pivotal role in our daily interactions with the world. This remarkable organ possesses a wide range of natural sensors that enrich our experiences, enabling us to perceive touch, position, an ...

Spinal cord injury (SCI) impairs the flow of sensory and motor signals between the brain and the areas of the body located below the lesion level. Here, we describe a neurorehabilitation setup combining several approaches that were shown to have a positive ...

We are interested in developing and building an experimental system for controlling a quadruped robot with a brain-derived signal of a rat. We recorded large ensembles of neurones in left M1 and right M1 and S1 using chronically implanted multi-electrodes ...

Understanding behavior requires datasets that capture humans while carrying out complex tasks. The kitchen is an excellent environment for assessing human motor and cognitive function, as many complex actions are naturally exhibited in kitchens from choppi ...

Background: The freezing episode (FE) management during gait in Parkinson's disease is inefficient with current medications, neurosurgery, and physical interventions. Knowing the biomechanical change patients suffer preceding FE would be the ultimate goal ...

Intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) of the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) can produce percepts that mimic somatic sensation and, thus, has potential as an approach to sensorize prosthetic limbs. However, it is not known whether ICMS could recreate act ...

Recent research has made remarkable strides in restoring sensory feedback for prosthetic users, including tactile, proprioceptive, and thermal feedback. Herein, a sensory modality that has been largely neglected is explored: the ability to perceive wetness ...

Restoring natural sensation via neuroprosthetics relies on the possibility of encoding complex and nuanced information. For example, an ideal brain–machine interface with sensory feedback would provide the user with sensation about movement, pressure, curv ...

Joint biomechanics and spatiotemporal gait parameters change with age or disease and are used in treatment decision-making. Research question: To investigate whether kinematic predictors of spatiotemporal parameters during gait differ by age in healthy ind ...

Balance impairment is a common symptom of Parkinson’s disease (PD), suggesting the reclassification of the PD to a tetrad: rest tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia, and balance impairment. Falling is the most evident symptom of inadequate balance. Falls are exp ...

The auricular muscle (AM) is a promising yet understudied candidate for human–machine interfaces (HMIs) with the potential to improve motor functions and expand user capabilities. This study investigates the potential of AM-based control for motor augmentation. We conducted an in-depth neural and behavioral assessment to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of AM-based control. Over ten sessions, eight participants engaged in biofeedback and cursor control tasks designed to refine AM contractions and

Objective: Brain-body interfaces (BBIs) have emerged as a very promising solution for restoring voluntary hand control in people with upper-limb paralysis. The BBI module decoding motor commands from brain signals should provide the user with intuitive, ac ...

Freezing of Gait (FoG) is a common condition in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). It often leads to falls, and it severely affects the patient's quality of life. Although the neural mechanism of FoG is not well-known, wearable sensorbased assistive s ...

Recent research demonstrates that naïve users can be trained to perform complex motor tasks, including trimanual activities, using an extra robotic arm (XRA). While previous studies show task‐specific improvements with XRAs, it remains uncertain whether sk ...

A major challenge involved in human-machine interfaces is developing feedback strategies that improve control and benefit patients with motor disabilities. Here, we propose, validate, and mechanistically characterize a personalized, closed-loop strategy that delivers reinforcement feedback in real time during human-machine interface control. Across five experiments involving 106 participants and two control interfaces, fewer than 20 reinforcement trials produced immediate improvements in force control and l

Neuroprosthetics is a discipline that aims at restoring lost functions to people affected by a variety of neurological disorders or neuro-traumatic lesions. It combines the expertise of computer science and electrical, mechanical, and micro/nanotechnology ...

Introduction: Parkinson's disease (PD) causes gait abnormalities that may be associated with an arm swing reduction. Medication and freezing of gait (FoG) may influence gait characteristics. However, these comparisons do not consider differences in gait sp ...

Spinal cord injury (SCI) impairs motor function and quality of life. Transcutaneous Spinal Cord Stimulation (tSCS) is a non-invasive method to restore motor function by activating spinal circuits below the lesion. However, its effectiveness is limited by i ...
