Freezing of gait (FoG) in Parkinson’s disease (PD) is an episodic failure to initiate or sustain gait, elevating fall risk. While clinical observation remains the gold standard, inertial sensors enable the objective, event-level characterization of movements. We aimed to quantify sensor signatures across baseline, pre-FoG, FoG, and post-FoG windows and to test whether a frequency-domain FoG-ratio and time-domain acceleration (RMS) differentiate these windows during Turning and Walking. We analyzed the DeFoG

Realistic body images (avatars) have been long utilized in virtual reality applications, and they are becoming increasingly used in Neuroscience and Neuroprosthetics fields. To elucidate monkeys' perception of avatars, we have measured reaction of two naive rhesus monkeys when confronted to realistic 3D monkey avatars with different facial expressions and different levels of realism. We have compared it with their reaction to images of real monkeys with similar facial expressions. Monkeys were initially ove

The emergence of robotic body augmentation provides exciting innovations that will revolutionize the fields of robotics, human-machine interaction and wearable electronics. Although augmentative devices such as extra robotic arms and fingers are informed b ...

The present invention concerns a thermal sensing device (1) and a sensory feedback system and method using such thermal sensing device, comprising at least one film (19) of electrically insulating polymer defining a global surface of the thermal sensing de ...

Human-machine interfaces (HMIs) can be used to decode a user's motor intention to control an external device. People that suffer from motor disabilities, such as spinal cord injury, can benefit from the uses of these interfaces. While many solutions can be ...

Background: Recently, we reported the presence of phantom thermal sensations in amputees: thermal stimulation of specific spots on the residual arm elicited thermal sensations in their missing hands. Here, we exploit phantom thermal sensations via a standa ...

Understanding behavior requires datasets that capture humans while carrying out complex tasks. The kitchen is an excellent environment for assessing human motor and cognitive function, as many complex actions are naturally exhibited in kitchens from chopping to cleaning. Here, we introduce the EPFL-Smart-Kitchen-30 dataset, collected in a noninvasive motion capture platform inside a kitchen environment. Nine static RGB-D cameras, inertial measurement units (IMUs) and one head-mounted HoloLens~2 headset were

Motor augmentation (MA) is an emerging field at the intersection of engineering, robotics, and neuroscience, aiming to enhance human capabilities through the integration of extra limbs. This concept leverages the body’s physiological redundancies, including those within the nervous system. This study examined motor imagery (MI) involving a virtual extra arm, focusing on differentiating its neural patterns from those of biological limbs. Thirty participants performed unimanual reaching MI tasks before (Pre)

As a result of improved understanding of brain mechanisms as well as unprecedented technical advancement in neural recording methods and computer technology, it is now possible to translate large-scale brain signals into movement intentions in real time. S ...

Over the past decade, research has shown that the primary motor cortex (M1), the brain's main output for movement, also responds to rewards. These reward signals may shape motor output in its final stages, influencing movement invigoration and motor learni ...

The loss of a hand can disrupt body movements, perception of self and the surrounding world, and the emotional fabric of touch. Advances in neuroprosthetics now make restoration of tactile, proprioceptive, and thermal sensations feasible through interfaces with peripheral nerves, the spinal cord, or skin. These somatosensory neuroprostheses not only improve the manipulation of objects and motor learning after amputation, but can also reduce phantom limb pain and enhance embodiment of the artificial limb. Th

Gait impairments is a common condition in post-stroke subjects. We recently presented a wearable ankle exoskeleton called G-Exos, which showed that the device assisted in the ankle's dorsiflexion and inversion/reversion movements. The aim of the current pi ...

The loss of hand function is one of the most devastating impairments for individuals with paralysis. While current neurotechnologies can partially restore prehensile control, they fall short of enabling independent finger movements — an essential requirement for full hand dexterity. Achieving this level of precision demands highly selective activation of individual muscles or muscle groups. In this first-in-human study, we explored a novel approach in an individual with chronic tetraplegia. Our method combi

The brain coordinates multiple parallel motor programs, ensuring synergy and preventing interference during movements. Yet, performance often degrades when brain–machine interfaces are used during concurrent tasks or ongoing movements. We suggest that latent neural representations may represent a strategy to solve this issue. In this study, we addressed this question using neural signals from a tetraplegic individual with partial residual motor function, implanted with a wireless epidural electrocorticograp

Experiments have shown that healthy subjects can detect materials solely relying on the material's thermal properties at their fingertip. We are interested in developing a non-invasive temperature display for sensory substitution for patients with arm ampu ...

Background: Individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) with freezing of gait (FoG) exhibit difficulty with changes in sensory input, indicating a potential sensorimotor integration deficit. Understanding how levodopa impacts balance particularly in FoG, is ...

Introduction: This study aims to evaluate the effects of medication, and the freezing of gait (FoG) on the kinematic and kinetic parameters of gait in people with Parkinson's disease (pwPD) compared to neurologically healthy. Methods: Twenty-two people wit ...

Advancements in neural engineering have enabled the development of Robotic Prosthetic Hands (RPHs) aimed at restoring hand functionality. Current commercial RPHs offer limited control through basic on/off commands. Recent progresses in machine learning ena ...
