A series of nanoporous membranes prepared from polyethylene-block-polystyrene were applied for size-selective diffusion of glucose and albumin molecules. Millimeter-sized test cells for characterization of such molecular diffusions were designed assuming a ...

Wireless communications in lossy media encounter growing interest, with applications as telemedicine, ground sensing, remote pipeline sensing, and food quality testing among others. As an application, an autonomous implantable Body Sensor Node for monitori ...

We present a viscometric affinity biosensor for continuous monitoring of glucose in biological fluids such as blood and plasma. The sensing principle of this chemico-mechanical sensor is based upon the viscosity variation of a sensitive fluid with glucose ...

The paper presents the European ACTS project “M2VTS” which stands for Multi Modal Verification for Teleservices and Security Applications. The primary goal of this project is to address the issue of secured access to local and centralised services in a multimedia environment. The main objective is to extend the scope of application of network based services by adding novel and intelligent functionalities, enabled by automatic verification systems combining multimodal strategies (secured access based on spee

Mixtures of aqueous solutions of dextran and concanavalin A have a potential use as glucose sensing substances. We investigate these mixtures at low viscosities which are especially advantageous for miniature mechanical glucose sensing devices. The glucose ...

We investigated the feasibility of a concentric rotational microviscometer which is actuated remotely. This type of sensor might find application in vivo as a passive implant. The heart of the sensor is a cylindrical rotor, actuated from a distance of up t ...

The retention, diffusion and structural properties of 2–4 nm nanoporous alumina membranes were investigated in view of their integration as size-selective interface in a glucose sensor. These membranes exhibit remarkable glucose diffusion properties with o ...

In this work, we present the general concept of an instrumented smart knee prosthesis for in-vivo measurement of forces and kinematics. This system can be used for early monitoring of the patient after implantation and prevent possible damage to the prosth ...

A platform to study ultrasound as a source for wireless energy transfer and communication for implanted medical devices is described. A tank is used as a container for a pair of electroacoustic transducers, where a control unit is fixed to one wall of the tank and a transponder can be manually moved in three axes and rotate using a mechanical system. The tank is filled with water to allow acoustic energy and data transfer, and the system is optimized to avoid parasitic effects due to cables, reflection path

The design procedure, realization and measurements of an implantable radiator for telemetry applications are presented. First, free space analysis allows the choice of the antenna typology with reduced computation time. Subsequently the antenna, inserted i ...

A novel system for remote monitoring of metabolism in animal model is proposed in this paper. The system is obtained by integrating Bio-Nano-Sensors to detect single- metabolites, an electrochemical front-end made with off- the-shelf components, an RF communication sub-system, and an antenna of new design. The system has been calibrated and tested for continuous monitoring of four different metabolites: glucose, lactate, glutamate, and adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Tests with animal models (mice) have been

An active implantable chemico-rheological sensor including control electronics, a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) and an RF transceiver has been demonstrated. The ultra-low power system architecture achieves an energy per viscosity measurement of only 16.6mJ of which 56% are dedicated to the micro-rheometer, 40% to the transceiver, and 4% to the DSP. Four coins batteries with a capacity of 150J each (Energizer 376) enabled a life time of 28’500 cycles at 37°C. The System in Package (SiP) fits in a 8.4mm in d

The proof of concept of a continuously sensing affinity device based on the glucose-dependent viscosity of a sensitive solution containing dextran and Concanavalin A has been successfully demonstrated. The biosensor incorporates a piezoelectric diaphragm a ...

Total knee arthroplasty is a widely performed surgical technique. Soft tissue force balancing during the operation relies strongly on the experience of the surgeon in equilibrating tension in the collateral ligaments. Little information on the forces in th ...

In this work we present an instrumented smart knee prosthesis for in-vivo measurement of forces and kinematics. Studying the constraints, we designed minimal sensory systems to be placed in the polyethylene part of the prosthesis. The magnetic sensors and ...

Readily-available and low-cost commercial polymer-based composite materials, such as standard epoxy-fibreglass printed circuit board (PCB) substrates and resin-carbon thick-film piezoresistors, were evaluated as a solution for medical force sensors, such as a wrist rehabilitation device and an implantable wireless artificial knee force sensor. We show that such materials have high sensitivity, and sufficient short-term stability – provided careful mechanical design and materials selection are made - to allo

A novel system for remote monitoring of metabolism in an animal model is proposed in this paper. The system is obtained by integrating bio-nano-sensors to detect single- metabolites, an electrochemical front-end made with off-the-shelf components, a radio ...

We present a viscometric affinity biosensor that can potentially allow continuous multi-analyte monitoring in biological fluids like blood or plasma. The sensing principle is based on the detection of viscosity changes of a polymeric solution which has a s ...

Cell culture environment monitoring system (6) for monitoring parameters relevant to cell growth in at least one culture dish (4) containing a cell growth medium (14), including at least one sensing device (22, 22') configured to measure environmental para ...

The invention relates to a viscosimetric sensor for monitoring an analyte level in a patient or in body fluids ex vivo. In particular, the invention relates to a sensor for monitoring analytes, such as glucose levels in a patient. The sensor comprises at l ...
