The accurate prediction of transmural stresses in arterial walls requires on the one hand robust and efficient numerical schemes for the solution of boundary value problems including fluid-structure interactions and on the other hand the use of a material ...

This paper deals with fast simulations of the hemodynamics in large arteries by considering a reduced model of the associated fluid-structure interaction problem, which in turn allows an additional reduction in terms of the numerical discretisation. The re ...

This paper considers numerical simulations of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems in hemodynamics for idealized geometries of healthy cerebral arteries modeled by both nonlinear isotropic and anisotropic material constitutive laws. In particular, it ...

The evaluation of cardiac contractility by the assessment of the ventricular systolic elastance function is clinically challenging and cannot be easily obtained at the bedside. In this work, we present a framework characterizing left ventricular systolic f ...

Accurate registration of vascular shapes is essential for comparing anatomical geometries, extracting reliable measurements, and generating realistic models in cardiovascular research. Conventional surface registration methods often face limitations in efficiency, scalability, and generalization across shape cohorts. In this work, we present AD–SVFD, a deep learning framework that simultaneously performs deformable registration of vascular geometries to a pre–defined reference anatomy and enables the synthe

The computational fluid dynamics of the heart represents a challenging task both in terms of mathematical and numerical modeling; this is mainly due to the pulsatile nature of the blood flow, to its complex interaction with the valves, and, more in general, to the reciprocal action of the components responsible for the heart functioning. Even if one focuses on the study of the left ventricle, the blood flow patterns result to be significantly dependent on the mechanical contraction and relaxation of the mus

In this paper we propose a new, purely algebraic, Petrov-Galerkin reduced basis (RB) method to solve the parametrized Stokes equations, where parameters serve to identify the (variable) domain geometry. Our method is obtained as an algebraic least squares ...

Characterizing left ventricle (LV) systolic function in the presence of an LV assist device (LVAD) is extremely challenging. We developed a framework comprising a deep neural network (DNN) and a 0D model of the cardiovascular system to predict parameters o ...

Objectives: We are interested in the numerical simulation of the anastomotic region comprised between outflow canula of LVAD and the aorta. Segmentation, geometry reconstruction and grid generation from patient specific data remain an issue because of the variable quality of DICOM images, in particular CT-scan (e.g. metallic noise of the device, non-aortic contrast phase). We propose a general framework to overcome this problem and create suitable grids for numerical simulations. Methods: Preliminary treatm

Machine learning (ML)-driven reduced-order modelling is applied to accelerate steady-state convergence in three-dimensional, nonlinear, flux-driven two-fluid simulations of boundary plasma turbulence. A parametric scan of plasma resistivity, heating and density sources is performed to generate comprehensive datasets across various turbulent regimes for model training and validation. To efficiently manage and interpret these datasets, we apply the proper orthogonal decomposition technique to reduce the dimen

The mortar finite element method is a well-established method for the numerical solution of partial differential equations on domains displaying non-conforming interfaces. The method is known for its application in computational contact mechanics. However, ...

In this work we present numerical simulations of continuous flow left ventricle assist device implantation with the aim of comparing the ascending and the descending aorta anastomosis of outflow cannula. Despite the fact that the second approach is less in ...

We study a nonlinear fluid–structure interaction (FSI) problem between an incompressible, viscous fluid and a composite elastic structure consisting of two layers: a thin layer (membrane) in direct contact with the fluid, and a thick layer (3D linearly ela ...

Modeling Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) in the vascular system is mandatory to reliably compute mechanical indicators in vessels undergoing large deformations. In order to cope with the computational complexity of the coupled 3D FSI problem after discretizations in space and time, a parallel solution is often mandatory. In this paper we propose a new block parallel preconditioner for the coupled linearized FSI system obtained after space and time discretization. We name it FaCSI to indicate that it explo

In this thesis we propose and analyze the numerical methods for the approximation of axisymmetric flows as well as algorithms suitable for the solution of fluid-structure interaction problems. Our investigation is aimed at, but are not restricted to, the simulation of the blood flow dynamics. The first part of this work deals with an axisymmetric fluid model based on three-dimensional incompressible Stokes or Navier–Stokes equations which are solved on a two-dimensional half-section of the domain under cons

The 'gender mathematics gap' which persists in many countries means that women students may, on average, have less high school preparation in mathematics than men students entering engineering education. This in turn could impact their performance in first ...

When modelling the cardiovascular system, the effect of the vessel wall on the blood flow has great relevance. Arterial vessels are complex living tissues and three-dimensional specific models have been proposed to represent their behaviour. The numerical ...

An iterative Finite Element method predicated on a linearization of the weak form around a reference configuration is derived for general, three-dimensional, free-surface flows, including systems with arbitrary contact angles. This sharp-interface method is a rigorous generalization of the Total Linearization Method that was proposed by Kruyt et al. (International Journal for Numerical Methods in Fluids 1988; 8: 351–363) for two-dimensional flows with contact angles limited to 90◦. In contrast to existing n

In this work, we apply the space–time Galerkin reduced basis (ST–GRB) method to a reduced fluid–structure interaction model, for the numerical simulation of hæmodynamics in arteries. In essence, ST–GRB extends the classical reduced basis (RB) method, exploiting a data–driven low–dimensional linear encoding of the temporal dynamics to further cut the computational costs. The current investigation brings forth two key enhancements, compared to previous works on the topic. On the one side, we model blood flow
