Using a pump-probe differential transmission experiment in heterodyne detection, we measured the refractive index dynamics at the ground-state excitonic transition in electrically pumped InAs/GaAs quantum-dot amplifiers emitting near 1.3 mu m at room tempe ...

A very promising way to increase the detection efficiency of nanowire superconducting single-photon detectors (SSPDs) consists in integrating them with advanced optical structures such as distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs) and optical waveguides. This req ...

We unveil the role of bound-to-continuum photoexcitation of carriers as a relevant process that affects the performance of quantum dot (OD) lasers. We present the response of an InAs/InGaAs QD laser to a sub-band gap pump, showing an unexpected depletion o ...

We have investigated carrier spin dynamics in InAs columnar quantum dots (CQDs) by time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) measurement. The CQDs were formed by depositing a 1.8 monolayer InAs seed dot layer and a short-period GaAs/InAs superlattice (SL). The ...

We directly investigate, by means of near-field spectroscopy, the spatial distribution of the optical cavity modes of 2D photonic crystal microcavities. Numerical simulations confirm that the photoluminescence maps of quantum dots embedded in the photonic ...

Using a differential transmission pump-probe experiment in heterodyne detection, the ultrafast gain and refractive-index dynamics of the ground-state transition in InAs/GaAs quantum-dot amplifiers emitting near 1.3 mu m at working condition, that is at room temperature and under electrical injection were measured. An ultrafast gain recovery on a subpicosecond time scale is observed at high electrical injection indicating fast carrier relaxation into the dot ground state, which is appealing for high-speed ap

We report direct evidence of enhanced spontaneous emission in a photonic crystal light-emitting diode (LED) at telecom wavelength (lambda similar to 1300 nm). This result is crucial to obtain an electrically driven single photon source with high extraction ...

A fundamental step towards achieving an "on demand" single photon source would be the possibility of electrical pumping for a single QD and thus the integration of such a device in an opto-electronic circuit. In this work we describe the fabrication proces ...

We demonstrate the feasibility and flexibility of artificial shape engineering of epitaxial semiconductor nanostructures. Novel nanostructures including InGaAs quantum rods (QRs), nanocandles, and quantum dots (QDs)-in-rods were realized on a GaAs substrat ...

We present a spectral tuning mechanism of photonic crystal microcavities based on microfluidics. The microinfiltration with water of one or few cavity holes and its subsequent controlled evaporation allow us to tune the cavity resonances in a spectral rang ...

The insertion of a metal-coated tip on the surface of a photonic crystal microcavity is used for simultaneous near field imaging of electric and magnetic fields in photonic crystal nanocavities, via the radiative emission of embedded semiconductor quantum ...

The post-fabrication control of evanescent tunnelling in photonic crystal molecules is demonstrated through the combination of selective infiltration and oxidation. By laser non thermal oxidation, we reduce the photonic coupling by more than 30% while by m ...

We demonstrate that the presence of charges around a semiconductor quantum dot (QD) strongly affects its optical properties and produces nonresonant coupling to the modes of a microcavity. We show that, besides (multi)exciton lines, a QD generates a spectr ...

We present the local polymer infiltration of planar photonic crystal cavities via a maskless laser-writing technique. After the infiltration of the air holes with a UV-curable monomer a focused laser is used to locally polymerize the monomer in selected ho ...

We present the first nanoscale (down to approximate to 50 x 50 nm(2)) detector displaying single-photon sensitivity and a nanosecond response. This type of nanodetector can also be operated in multiphoton mode, where the detection threshold can be set at N ...

We demonstrate the nonresonant magnetic interaction at optical frequencies between a photonic crystal microcavity and a metallized near-field microscopy probe. This interaction can be used to map and control the magnetic component of the microcavity modes. ...

A method to achieve photoinduced tuning of PhC nanocavity modes is discussed and implemented. It is based on light induced oxidation in air atmosphere with very low thermal budget which produces a local reduction of the GaAs membrane effective thickness an ...

The progress in nanofabrication has made possible the realization of optic nanodevices able to handle single photons and to exploit the quantum nature of single-photon states. In particular, quantum cryptography (or more precisely quantum key distribution, ...

We demonstrate edge-emitting lasers based on self-assembled InAs quantum dots (QDs) on GaAs substrates. The InAs QDs are embedded in an InGaAs quantum well (QW) to red-shift the lasing transition. The lasers emit at lambda=1.2 mum with threshold current densities approximate to100 A/cm(2). Maximum modal gains on the order of 5 cm(-1) are deduced for a single QD sheet.

The authors demonstrate a sample method to achieve local tuning of optical modes in GaAs photonic crystal nanocavities by continuous wave laser-assisted oxidation in air atmosphere. By irradiation with a focused laser beam at power levels of a few tells of ...
