Ceramic and glass hotplates are useful for a wide range of applications, such as solid- oxide fuel cells, microreactors and sensors. This work reviews different encountered hotplate geometries, materials and applications. Simple devices may use standard thick-film technology on elongated substrates. On the other hand, LTCC, due to its excellent structuration characteristics, allows much more design freedom and is the technology of choice for achieving high temperatures in a compact package.

Total knee arthroplasty is a widely performed surgical technique. Soft tissue force balancing during the operation relies strongly on the experience of the surgeon in equilibrating tension in the collateral ligaments. Little information on the forces in th ...

In this work we present an instrumented smart knee prosthesis for in-vivo measurement of forces and kinematics. Studying the constraints, we designed minimal sensory systems to be placed in the polyethylene part of the prosthesis. The magnetic sensors and ...

Despite a large amount of data and numerous theoretical proposals, the microscopic mechanism of ransport in thick-film resistors remains unclear. However, recent low-temperature measurements point toward a possible variable-range-hopping mechanism of transport. Here, we examine how such a mechanism affects the gauge factor of thick-film resistors. We find that at sufficiently low temperatures T, for which the resistivity follows the Mott’s law R(T);exp(T0 /T)1/4, the gauge factor ~GF! is proportional to (T0

Readily-available and low-cost commercial polymer-based composite materials, such as standard epoxy-fibreglass printed circuit board (PCB) substrates and resin-carbon thick-film piezoresistors, were evaluated as a solution for medical force sensors, such as a wrist rehabilitation device and an implantable wireless artificial knee force sensor. We show that such materials have high sensitivity, and sufficient short-term stability – provided careful mechanical design and materials selection are made - to allo

Recently, LTCC (low-temperature co-fired ceramic) technology has increasingly found applications beyond pure electronics, in fields such as microfluidics, sensors and actuators, due to the ease of shaping the tapes in the green (unfired) state. Accurate control of hollow structures such as channels, membranes, cavities and gaps below cantilevers has remained difficult, however, although carbon-based sacrificial materials and adhesive/solvent-assisted low-pressure lamination techniques are adequate for sever

Thick-film and LTCC (Low Temperature Cofired Ceramic) technologies are now recognised as valid platforms for the fabrication of novel devices at the mesoscale for sensor, actuator, fluidic, electrical and packaging applications. In these fields, they allow the fabrication of sensitive, yet robust and cost effective devices. This work reviews and comments the different available structuration techniques, with an emphasis on sensor technology and on structuration methods based on sacrificial layers. This is e

Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramic (LTCC) Technology is recentlyaddressed to be a key approach among advanced packaging technologies, offering many advantages over its competitors. One of its most attractivefeatures is the ease of 3-D structuration thanks to the LTCC green tapes. These tapes can be easily cut into desired forms in the way to realize bothstructural and electrical functions under a single system. Three dimensional structures such as membranes, channels can be achieved either by cuttingand lamin

High temperatures, very high pressures and/or the presence of aggressive media cannot be covered by standard packaging methods, which only provide limited environmental stability. Ceramic technologies such as LTCC (Low Temperature Cofired Ceramic) and thick-film, on the other hand, offer easy manufacturability while achieving hermeticity / media isolation as well as outstanding chemical and thermal stability. This contribution will present several sensor and packaging applications of these technologies to d

In this work, a low-firing thick-film materials system allowing fabrication of piezoresistive sensors on surgical alloys is presented in detail, with application to a force-sensing surgical instrument. The system comprises a series of individual thick-film ...

The Quantime project aims at developing a miniature atomic clock suited for the telecom market, requiring a wide operating temperature range (from -40 to +85°C), and a low production cost. The CPT (Coherent Population Trapping) technique for atomic interrogation is used for miniaturization and low power consumption. In the first phase of the project, the clock architecture was chosen, and the main sub-systems were developed. A clock breadboarding demonstrator was assembled and the measured Allan deviation o

This work describes the design, fabrication and laser trimming aspects of a low-cost compressive force sensor with analogue signal conditioning, designed for a medical syringe pump. First, the general design aspects are discussed, in view of facile and reliable batch production and measurement performance. Then, the circuit's trimming procedure is presented, featuring single- pass adjustment of sensor output in its final state, i.e. with all components mounted, without prior passive resistor trimming. Key w

We present a viscometric affinity biosensor that can potentially allow continuous multi-analyte monitoring in biological fluids like blood or plasma. The sensing principle is based on the detection of viscosity changes of a polymeric solution which has a s ...

In this work we study in more details the impact of voltage trimming on different characteristics of model thick-film resistors (TFRs). Two series of RuO2-based TFRs with different conducting grain sizes are studied. As the composition of model pastes is c ...

In this work, the properties (sheet-resistance, temperature coefficient and piezoresistance / gauge factor) and stability of thick-film resistors with low firing temperatures (525...650°C) are studied. To this end, two low-melting lead borosilicate glass composition have been chosen, together with RuO2 as a conductive filler. The effect on the properties and stability of composition and firing temperature is studied. The stability of the materials is quantified during high-temperature storage (annealing) at

An innovative multifunctional LTCC module has been designed for miniature atomic clock packaging. The components of miniature atomic clocks need to be efficiently packaged and connected to each other, and a precise temperature control is required for them. ...
