Understanding the details of the correlation between time series is an essential step on the route to assessing the causal relation between systems. Traditional statistical indicators, such as the Pearson correlation coefficient and the mutual information, ...

Chromogenic in situ hybridization (CISH) is a common technique that is used for human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) assessment in breast cancer diagnosis. CISH is based on the enzymatic amplification of DNA markers, generating a colorimetric im ...

Diagnostic alkali atom (e.g., lithium) beams are routinely used to diagnose magnetically confined plasmas, namely, to measure the plasma electron density profile in the edge and the scrape off layer region. A light splitting optics system was installed int ...

Two high performance JET-ILW pulses, pertaining to the 2016 experimental campaign, have been numerically simulated with the self-consistent code COREDIV with the aim of predicting the ELM-averaged power load to the target when extrapolated to DT plasmas. T ...

For the past several years, the JET scientific programme (Pamela et al 2007 Fusion Eng. Des. 82 590) has been engaged in a multi-campaign effort, including experiments in D, H and T, leading up to 2020 and the first experiments with 50%/50% D-T mixtures si ...

A large number of lab-on-a-chip applications use fluorescence for quantifying biological entities. In such applications, incorporation of a stable on-chip fluorescent reference source would be highly desirable in order to compensate for instrumental parame ...

The genome of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans shows far-reaching similarities to that of humans. C. elegans is therefore considered as a powerful model organism in biological research related to humans, for instance for the study of human diseases. Suc ...

Assays focusing on emerging biological phenomena in an animal's life can be performed during embryogenesis. While the embryo of Caenorhabditis elegans has been extensively studied, its biomechanical properties are largely unknown. Here, we demonstrate that ...

The absorption of dietary calcium through the intestinal barrier is essential for maintaining health in general and especially of the bone system. We propose a microfluidic model that studies free calcium (Ca2+) transport through a confluent monolayer of C ...

Heavy impurities, such as tungsten (W), can exhibit strongly poloidally asymmetric density profiles in rotating or radio frequency heated plasmas. In the metallic environment of JET, the poloidal asymmetry of tungsten enhances its neoclassical transport up ...

The JET gamma-ray cameras have been recently upgraded within the gamma-ray camera upgrade project in support of development of JET high performance deuterium plasma scenarios and in preparation of deuterium-tritium experiments. New, dedicated detectors bas ...

We investigated the bacterial food digestion and accumulation in wild-type adult Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) worms that have fed on either non-pathogenic RFP-expressing Escherichia coli (E. coli) OP50 or pathogenic-RFP-expressing Pseudomonas aerugi ...

In this contribution we present OES measurements in the JET tokamak of the deuterated NH (ND) radical and the correlation between results of those experiments and measurement of ammonia production. The observation region covers most of the divertor and its ...

We present an active fixed-volume mixer based on the creation of multiple source–sink microfluidic flows in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) chip without the need of external or internal pumps. To do so, four different pressure-controlled actuation chambers a ...

Flexible bearings are advantageous for microelectromechanical systems as they enable precise, accurate, repeatable, and reliable motion without frictional contact. Based on the principle of a rotary folded-beam suspension, we have designed, fabricated, mod ...

Two-dimensional (2D) colloidal CdSe nanocrystals (NCs) with precise atomic-scale thickness have attracted intensive attention in recent years due to their optical properties and quantum confinement effects originating from their particular band structure. ...

We present a valveless micropump in glass, which is magnetically actuated using the sinusoidal current of an external electromagnet. We employ a powder blasting microerosion process for microstructuring the glass substrates and fusion bonding for assembly ...

Neutron emission spectroscopy is a diagnostic technique that allows for energy measurements of neutrons born in nuclear reactions. The JET tokamak fusion experiment (Culham, UK) has a special role in this respect as advanced spectrometers for 2.5 MeV and 1 ...

Bayesian integrated data analysis combines measurements from different diagnostics to jointly measure plasma parameters of interest such as temperatures, densities, and drift velocities. Integrated data analysis of fast-ion measurements has long been hampe ...

We expose the past and present state-of-the-art of Micro-ElectroMechanical System (MEMS) inductors. Starting from the basic inductor equations, we discuss the various material and frequency-dependent loss mechanisms that contribute to a decreasing quality ...
