We demonstrate a monolithic polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell by integrating a narrow (200 mu m) Nafion strip in a molded polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) structure. We propose two designs, based on two 200 mu m-wide and two 80 mu m-wide parallel microflui ...

We present a new method for three-dimensional (3D) magnetic focusing of magnetic microparticles in a microfluidic system. On-chip magnetic particle manipulation in themicrochannel is achieved by a high-gradientmagnetic field generated by means of a microma ...

The continuous surveillance of drinking water is extremely important to provide early warning of contamination and to ensure continuous supplies of healthy drinking water. Isolation and detection of a particular type of pathogen present at low concentratio ...

C. elegans is an attractive model organism in biology, as it shows genetic similarity with humans, facilitates microscopic observation due to its transparency, and has a short life cycle. Moreover, many mutants expressing fluorescent proteins in particular ...

In this study, beryllium tiles from Joint European Torus (JET) vacuum vessel wall were analysed and compared regarding their position in the vacuum vessel and differences in the exploitation conditions during two campaigns of ITER-Like-Wall (ILW) in 2011-2 ...

A technique that allows direct optical imaging of nanostructures and determines quantitatively geometric nanofeatures beyond the classical diffraction limit by using high-refractive index glass microspheres is introduced. The glass microsphere is put on a ...

The low temperature boundary layer plasma (scrape-off layer or SOL) between the hot core and the surrounding vessel determines the level of power loading, erosion and implantation of material surfaces, and thus the viability of tokamak-based fusion as an e ...

A hybrid technology for the realization of threedimensional miniaturized power inductors, transformers and RF inductors is presented. This technology consists of combining planar Cu coils on polyimide substrates with high permeability and high resistivity ferrite cores. For miniaturized power inductors and transformers, high permeability (µr ~2000 Mn-Zn ferrite cores are used. These cores operate up to 10 MHz and are obtained by threedimensional micro-patterning of ferrite wafers using the powder-blasting t

Immunohistochemistry and fluorescence in situ hybridization are the two standard methods for human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) assessment. However, they have severe limitations to assess quantitatively intratumoral heterogeneity (ITH) when mu ...

Accurate measurement of the nuclear environment within a test tritium breeding-blanket module of a fusion reactor is crucial to determine tritium production rates which are relevant to self-sufficiency of tritium fuel supply, tritium accountancy and also t ...

Apparatus for retaining magnetic particles within a segment of a flow-through cell during flow of a fluid through the cell. The apparatus comprises (a) an electrical current source (12) (b) an electromagnet (13) having a winding (14) connected to the current source (12) and an air gap (23) between at least one pair of poles (21, 22) each of which has a corrugated outer surface and (c) a flow-through cell (18) which is configured and dimensioned to receive an amount of magnetic particles to be retained withi

Caenorhabditis elegans(C. elegans) constitutes an important model organism for use in nutrition and aging studies. We report a novel method for studying the dynamics ofEscherichia coli(E. coli) bacterial transit through the worms' intestine. A microfluidic ...

We report the fabrication of spherical superstructures composed of SiO2 and TiO2 nanoparticles and their applications in catalyzing organic reactions. Assembling of the nanoparticles into superstructures is done by heating a water-in-oil micro-emulsion, wh ...

A series of experimental observations of light impurity profiles was carried out in JET (Joint European Torus) ITER-like wall (ILW) L-mode plasmas in order to investigate their transport mechanisms. These discharges feature the presence of He-3, Be, C, N, ...

We describe the development of a microcalorimetric platform for accurate measurement of the heat power generated by chemical/biochemical reactions in liquid volumes of a few 10 µL, which we used to measure the heat of mixing of 1-propanol in deionized water. The system allows fast overall stabilization to a setpoint temperature with a stability of ± 1 mK. The combination of an open-well sample reservoir with a commercial nanocalorimetric chip (Xensor Integration) makes the platform easy to use and very vers

We propose an original concept for a sandwich immunoassay that is completely performed on-chip using streptavidin-coated beads as substrate. The latter are electrostatically self-assembled on aminosilane micropatterns at the bottom of a microfluidic channe ...

Measurements are reported of electromagnetic emission close to the cyclotron frequency of energetic ions in JET plasmas heated by waves in the ion cylotron range of frequencies (ICRF). Hydrogen was the majority ion species in all of these plasmas. The meas ...

Dielectric microspheres with appropriate refractive index can image objects with super-resolution, that is, with a precision well beyond the classical diffraction limit. A microsphere is also known to generate upon illumination a photonic nanojet, which is ...

High-refractive index dielectric microspheres positioned within the field of view of a microscope objective in a dielectric medium can focus the light into a so-called photonic nanojet. A sample placed in such nanojet can be imaged by the objective with su ...

Manipulating biological samples in microliter droplets has vast potential in molecular diagnostics. We present a system for the two-dimensional (2D) magnetic manipulation of aqueous droplets suspended in silicone oil as a platform for on-chip bioanalysis. ...
