Three subsize NbTi cable-in-conduit conductors have been tested in SULTAN test facility. The conductors are identical in the cable layout but they are different in transverse resistance: either SnAg strand coating without wraps, or Ni strand coating without wraps or Ni strand coating with the stainless steel wrapping of the last but one cable stage. Variation of initial current unbalance at the termination is provided by the demountable conductor termination. The effect of the transverse resistance on abili

The coupling current-losses of a full size, fusion dedicated Nb3Sn cable-in-conduit superconductor are measured as a function of the transverse load in the SULTAN III test facility. Applying a broad range of transport current (up to 56 kA) and background field (up to 12.1 T), the change of the transverse resistance is observed through the shift of the 0-crossing in the pick-up coil voltage. Despite the difficulty to extract useful information from the signal, the role of the strand Cr plating as resistive b

AC loss curves measured for the same conductors at SULTAN (CRPP) and at University of Twente (UT) in higher and respectively lower frequency range are compared to draw consistent results. From the unified curves, the coupling time constant (n tau) to be us ...

A Nb3Sn based, React&Wind flat cable, named RW2, was developed in the past three years at the Swiss Plasma Center in the scope of the EUROfusion conceptual studies for DEMO. The test results presented earlier proved an excellent DC performance, but large e ...

Pressure drop in the ITER PFCI cable-in-conduit conductor (CICC) has been measured at CRPP using pressurized water at room temperature. The PFCI conductor is a dual channel CICC and the coolant flows in parallel in the central channel and in the annular bu ...

Plasma control concepts are introduced which are likely to change when going from a 500-1000 s tokamak pulse to the discharges in a steady state tokamak, whose more economical design relies on the reduced number of thermal and mechanical stress duty cycles.

The change of length upon heat treatment of steel jacketed, Nb3Sn cable-in-conduit conductors (CICC) is driven by the difference of coefficient of thermal expansion between Nb3Sn and the other components. The cold work of the steel jacket also plays an imp ...

Transient stability experiments are carried out on a Nb3Sn cable-in-conduit conductor in the SULTAN test facility. A disturbance of variable duration is applied by a pulsed field, transverse to the conductor axis. The results show a high tolerance to large field transients even in the current sharing regime, well correlated with the extremely low coupling loss. Local disturbances, nonhomogeneous over the cable cross section, are also applied to investigate the ability to redistribute the current locally amo
