This study investigates the intrusion and crushing performance of hybrid fiber metal laminates based on aluminum and carbon fiber reinforced polymers, in comparison to reference aluminum parts, made from AA6451 or AA7075 automotive grade alloys. A first se ...

Monitoring fiber reinforced polymer composites (FRPC) during their production and operation is becoming crucial to track the performance of the final parts and optimize the overall life cycle. The challenges associated with integrating multifunctional sens ...

Micron- and submicron-sized barium titanate (BaTiO3) particles, untreated and surface modified with aminopropyl triethoxy silane, were incorporated in poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) to fabricate composites with up to 60 vol% of ceramic phase. ...

Carbon-epoxy prepregs are generally used to form the skins of honeycomb sandwich structures used in aerospace or racing yachts. For some applications, it is desirable to increase the thickness of the skins. In order to achieve an ideal core pressure level during cure for maximal skin-core bonding, the issue of air extraction from the honeycomb cells through the skin during processing thus becomes critical, in particular if vacuum only processing is used. In the present work, partially impregnated prepregs,

This experimental study reports effect of tuft geometry i.e., standard tufts and loops milled-down, and tufting pattern on Mode I interlaminar fracture in a GFRP. Standard tufting geometry is responsible for an increase in fracture resistance by 3.5-6 time ...

This paper describes the production of an adaptive composite by embedding thin pre-strained shape memory alloy actuators into a Kevlar-epoxy host material. In order to combine the activation and sensing capabilities, fibre Bragg grating sensors are also em ...

A novel method for the in-situ repair of composite sandwich structures using microvascular networks and cyanoacrylate (CA) adhesive systems has been presented. Upon a damage event, the vascules become ruptured, providing a route for the introduction of adh ...

Fiber reinforced polymers are massively used as an alternative to metals in structural applications. The brittle nature of their matrix, however, makes them more susceptible to crack formation and propagation resulting in costly repair operations and incre ...

In this study, three novel thermoplastic impregnation processes were analyzed towards automotive applications. The first process is thermoplastic compression resin transfer molding in which a glass fiber mat is impregnated in through thickness by a thermop ...

Phase-separated blends of epoxy and poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) provide crack repair in composites after a thermal treatment at 150 °C, but decrease the material’s fracture toughness. This article investigates the combination of healing with interlaminar fr ...

The development of residual strains and stresses is critical to manufacture composite structures with the required dimensional stability and mechanical performance. This work uses Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors to monitor strain build-up in carbon fiber ...

Life cycle assessment (LCA) and manufacturing focused life cycle costing are used to evaluate the potential advantages of composites in automotive applications. The life cycle costs and environmental performance of several suitable lightweight polymer comp ...

We present the development of a low-temperature liquid composite moulding cure schedule that is compatible with the fabrication of shape memory alloy (SMA)–epoxy composite materials. With this process, the SMA wires do not need to be maintained in place wi ...

The conception of epoxy thermosets with both reprocessability and flame retardancy delineates a new horizon in polymer science, offering a material solution that is not only superior in fire safety but is also environment friendly. Herein, a flame-retardan ...

The practical adhesion of maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (MAH-PE) to galvanised steel was studied using 3-point flexure tests, before and after hydrothermal ageing. Before bonding, the electro-galvanised steel was treated with γ -aminopropyltriethox ...

Water diffusion into composite adhesive joints was experimentally studied by means of gravimetric measurements in bond specimens. The main parameters controlling the diffusion in the bond components were obtained from water uptake experiments carried out i ...

The massive production of nonrenewable materials has exacerbated global environmental challenges, necessitating the development of sustainable alternatives. This study explores the potential of the Manicaria saccifera fabric, an indigenous Colombian natura ...

This study analyses the damage tolerance of nanofibre interleaved composites when subjected to low velocity impact. Cross-ply glass/epoxy composite laminates are produced. Drop-weight impact and residual compressive strength measurements are performed on t ...

In this international permeability benchmark exercise, in-plane permeability data for two reinforcement fabrics, obtained using a total of 16 different experimental procedures, were compared. Although, for each procedure, the results appear consistent, dif ...
