The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between nickel-titanium (NiTi) shape memory alloy wires, characterized by a nonlinear stress-strain behavior, and epoxy matrix was determined by pull-out tests. Tests were carried out at several temperatures and levels ...

From the experimental analysis of the photocuring process in terms of reaction kinetics as well as modulus and shrinkage build-up, the residual stresses arising during the photopolymerization of functionally graded composite coatings based on an acrylate m ...

Suberin is an aromatic-aliphatic cross-linked polyester structure which constitutes cell wall structures of cork. It is particularly interesting for its use of monomeric compounds towards renewable bio-based polymers. In this study, the extraction of suber ...

In liquid composite moulding, capillary phenomena take place as the fibre/air interface is progressively replaced by the fibre/resin interface. These effects are often neglected when computing the flow front progression into the fibre preform, because the ...

A model for the consolidation of thermoplastic composites reinforced with a warpknitted fabric was developed. The evolution of void content during composite consolidation achieved via film stacking was related to the processing parameters and the material properties. Since the knitting process results in local variations of fiber volume fractions even within a tow, the flow mechanisms are not identical to those occurring in homogeneously dispersed fibers. Two different types of micro-scale porosities were d

The through-thickness compressive behavior of fabric reinforcements is crucial in liquid composite molding manufacturing processes. Predictive simulations of the compressive response are thus necessary to enable a virtual processing workflow. These are com ...

Nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (NRGO) stabilized copper nanoparticles are designed to assist Cu(I)-catalyzed Huisgen [3+2] cycloaddition "click" chemistry (CuAAC). This study demonstrates a robust route for the synthesis of vastly dispersed heteroge ...

The interplay between capillary and viscous forces plays a significant role for optimal part quality in fiber-reinforced composites manufactured by Liquid Composite Molding (LCM); these are however difficult to analyze during flow. Two approaches are propo ...

Copolymerizing poly(hexamethylene terephthalamide-co-isophthalamide) (PA6TI) with 40 wt% polyamide 66 (PA66) results in only minor decreases in modulus and yield stress owing to isomorphous substitution of PA6TI units by PA66 units in the PA6TI alpha phase ...

Damage recovery after low-velocity impact has been assessed in woven E-glass fibre-reinforced polymer composites with an epoxy matrix and a blend of epoxy and 25 vol% of poly(e-caprolactone) (PCL). Impact was carried out at three energy levels (8.5, 17, 34 ...

In this study (0-3) P(VDF-TrFE)/BaTiO3 composites containing up to 60 vol% of ceramic phase were prepared by solvent casting or compression molding. Their thermomechanical, dielectric, and piezoelectric properties were investigated, and discussed in the li ...

Single crystals of ferromagnetic shape memory alloys (MSMA) exhibit magnetic field and stress induced strains via energy dissipating twinning. Embedding single crystalline MSMA particles into a polymer matrix could thus produce composites with enhanced ene ...

Vacuum Assisted Resin Infusion Molding (VARIM) with low vacuum pressure difference was used to manufacture woven glass fibre-reinforced epoxy resin plates, with a fibre volume fraction of approx. 50 vol% and containing ethyl phenylacetate (EPA)-filled caps ...

In a composite material (6), comprising a fibrous reinforcement (3), and a polymer matrix (14), wherein the polymer matrix (14) comprises two interpenetrating phases, namely a thermoset phase and a continuous thermoplastic phase, wherein the thermoset phas ...

Blends of difunctional epoxy monomer with a 4,4'-diaminodiphenylsulfone hardener and poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) were used as a self-healing matrix in woven glass fibre-reinforced polymer composites (FRPs). FRPs with these blends (containing 0, 25 and ...

A novel thermoplastic composite preforming process has been developed. This thermoplastic programmable powdered preforming process (TP-P4) uses commingled glass and polypropylene yarns, which are chopped to a desired length and deposited onto a vacuum scre ...

We investigated the healing of epoxy resins with embedded ethyl phenylacetate (EPA) solvent loaded capsules and shape memory alloy (SMA) wires under fatigue loading in tapered double cantilever beam (TDCB) mode. Under cyclic loading, the kinetics of solven ...

NiTi alloy wires were embedded during the infusion processing of woven carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) composite plates with the purpose to passively increase their damping. Two types of NiTi wires, having the same diameter of 203 mu m, were considered, one superelastic at room temperature, the other one martensitic. For the first one, a martensitic transformation was induced by applying a pre-strain of 2.5% before embedding the wires. The coexistence of austenite and martensite should provide dampin

This article reviews the main methods to manufacture large-scale composite parts, with a focus on Liquid Composite Molding techniques of thermoset-based fiber reinforced structural parts. As this process relies on the impregnation of a dry textile stack, t ...

In-plane permeability of small area (100 × 50 mm) alumina fiber woven fabrics grafted with aligned carbon nanotubes (CNT) was quantified by placing them in series with a glass mat of known permeability during a flow experiment. The methodology was first va ...
