Non-autoclave processing of honeycomb sandwich structures generally leads to poor compaction and high porosity of the skins, along with a decreased skin-core adhesion. The pressure level inside the honeycomb cells plays an important role and is controlled ...

This study developed a combined computational-experimental approach to investigate crack kinking in thick adhesively bonded Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) composite joints, focusing on the adhesive joints found at wind turbine blade trailing edges. Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) tests were performed on composite joints with a 10-mm thick epoxy adhesive, representative of trailing-edge joints. Finite Element (FE) models included cross-ply GFRP composites and an adhesive layer. Subsequently, both the com

The effect of silylation of microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) surfaces on β‐phase formation in poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) and the resulting viscoelastic and dielectric performance of MFC‐PVDF composites is investigated. Two different organosilanes, ...

As part of a project that aims to provide people with disabilities with simple assistive devices in Colombia, the possibility of creating a PET filament that can be printed by Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) from beverage bottle waste was investigated, wi ...

A process window providing guidelines to minimize internal stress levels and to prevent void formation during cure of thermoset composite materials is presented. A model taking into account the applied pressure and the level of stress borne by the fiber assembly was introduced to calculate the hydrostatic internal stress state in the resin during cure. Based on the fundamental mechanisms of matrix shrinkage and evolution of viscoelastic properties under the given processing conditions, the internal stress i

A methodology is presented to determine the saturation curve of a resin/glass fabric system, during infiltration in a transparent mould under constant flow rate. Video acquisitions are transformed by image analysis into saturation level versus position and ...

Detection of manufacturing‐induced defects in thermosetting composites is crucial to guarantee part quality, safety, and improve manufacturing efficiency. Residual stresses from cure and cool‐down often lead to matrix microcracking and geometrical distortion, with potential detrimental effects on mechanical performance and non‐fulfillment of geometrical requirements. Partial pre‐cure of the material prior to layup allows part of the exothermic reaction to exhaust before stacking the composite; thus, it can

In blends of unsaturated polyester (UP), poly (vinyl acetate) (PVAc), and styrene, a reaction-induced phase separation occurs upon curing that is due to the crosslinking between styrene and the UP molecules. The evolution of the morphology was observed by ...

Emission reduction from civil aviation has been intensively addressed in the scientific community in recent years. The combined use of novel aircraft engine architectures such as open rotor engines and lightweight materials offer the potential for fuel sav ...

We seek to address how air entrapment mechanisms during infiltration are influenced by the wetting characteristics of the fluid and the pore network formed by the reinforcement. To this end, we evaluated the behavior of two model fluids with different surf ...

The present study investigates the origin of voids in sheet molding compounds (SMCs) sheets and their transport during the manufacturing steps. Paste mixing, impregnation, thickening, and molding have been performed with five different SMC sheets, one with ...

Processing carbon fiber-reinforced composites into corner sections through compression molding poses challenges due to the limited flowability of continuous prepregs, resulting in reduced curved beam strength (CBS). The use of discontinuous plies was explo ...

Permeability of fibrous microstructures is a key material property for predicting the mold fill times and resin flow path during composite manufacturing. In this work, we report an efficient approach to predict the permeability of 3D microstructures from d ...

Modeling the consolidation of fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites at the part level presents a formidable computational challenge due to the multi-scale nature of the process. In this article, a method to bypass the multi-scale problem by homogenizin ...

A novel thermoplastic composite preforming and moulding process is investigated to target cost issues in textile composite processing associated with trim waste, and the limited mechanical properties of current bulk flow- moulding composites. The thermopla ...

Food engineering faces the difficult challenge of combining taste, i.e., tailoring texture and rheology of food matrices with the balanced intake of healthy nutrients. In materials science, fiber suspensions and composites have been developed as a versatil ...

The out-of-plane permeability of two glass fibre fabrics was measured by 26 institutions using silicone oil as a test fluid. Participants in this study were free to select the test procedure, specimen dimensions and data analysis method, provided that test ...

This study evaluates the combined roles of particle size and the addition of maleic anhydride polypropylene (PP-g-MAH) to improve 3D printing and mechanical properties of composite filaments based on recycled polypropylene (rPP) and rice husk (RH) obtained ...

We investigated the effect of rigid spherical inclusions such as microcapsules and fillers on the permeability of fabrics by using glass beads as model inclusions. Beads with a range of diameters (40-800 mu m) and volume fractions (2.5-10%) were sieved bet ...

Smart structures with tunable damping and stiffness characteristics are of high interest to aerospace applications, but often require an external power source to be activated. This can be avoided by using highly concentrated silica suspensions, which exhib ...
