Blends of commercial epoxy monomer with a 4,4'-diaminodiphenylsulfone hardener and poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) were evaluated for their potential as a self-healing matrix for fiber-reinforced composites, based on their room temperature toughness and s ...

Thick thermosetting composites offer unique opportunities for high-performance applications in several fields such as aerospace, wind energy, piping, pressurised vessels, marine industry, etc. However, realising their full potential requires a deep understanding of material behaviour during processing since cure-induced defects, such as thermal spikes, residual stresses and cure inhomogeneity, can undermine mechanical performance and increase the risk of flawed parts. This study numerically investigates a n

Impregnation time in Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) is directly proportional to resin viscosity and inversely proportional to fabric permeability, limiting the use of high-viscosity resins with conventional reinforcements. In this study, we show how to reduc ...

Highly concentrated colloidal suspensions exhibit a discontinuous shear-thickening behaviour. The transition from a low to a high viscosity state is associated to a large energy dissipation. This effect could find applications in structural damping while t ...

In continuous composite production, for example the continuous impregnation of steel wires or cords with a thermoplastic polyurethane matrix, an ideal and cost-effective solution to improve interfacial adhesion and durability would be to deposit and cure a primer, on-line, at high processing speeds. A UV-curable epoxy primer was investigated for this purpose; it is reticulated by cationic photo-polymerisation, possibly followed by dark-curing and/or post-cure during further processing. The primer base formu

When a thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer (TPU) is co-molded with galvanized steel, the subsequent adhesion and its durability are very sensitive to the chemical bonds created at the interface. Silane coupling primers are known for enhancing adhesion bet ...

Model composite plates composed of highly conductive slender copper fibres impregnated with a poorly conductive and transparent PMMA matrix were processed with different fibrous architectures, i.e. with various controlled fibre contents and orientations. T ...

The development of a robust material model able to accurately describe fibre bed compaction at different strain and strain rates is highly desirable because it is essential for the simulation of many composite manufacturing processes. In this study, we inv ...

High-performance thermoplastic composites based on semiaromatic polyamides are prime candidates for metal replacement in lightweight structural applications. However, the low ductility and toughness of semiaromatic polyamides remain major obstacles to thei ...

The present work investigates a novel and practical method to evaluate the healing efficiency of carbon-reinforced polymer composites. The method should be representative of damage occurring during the lifetime of a composite part, should tend to damage th ...

Due to its combination of performance and cost, bisphenol-A remains a dominant component in epoxy resins, despite its classification as an endocrine disruptor and its role in producing materials highly resistant to degradation1,2. Here, we show that diols derived from acetalized xyloses, despite their distinct structure, can closely mimic bisphenol’s reactivity, rigidity and connectivity in epoxies, while offering comparable formulation properties, enabling them to act as drop-in replacements for BPA. Xylos

Glass fiber reinforced composites with a self-healing, supramolecular hybrid network matrix were produced using a modified vacuum assisted resin infusion moulding process adapted to high temperature processing. The quality and fiber volume fraction (50%) o ...

In-plane permeability of textile fabrics is often characterized by one-dimensional rectilinear flow experiments, displaying limitations related to potential race-tracking effects and the need to run experiments at several fiber volume fractions. We propose ...

This chapter reviews the multiple applications of composites in sports from a historical perspective, and the crucial role of composite materials in gaining performance, comfort, safety, and freedom of design in many sports applications. The focus is placed on Olympic sports, addressing composites' role in 15 different competition sports, ranging from water sports to cycling, from fencing to athletics and winter sports. Common trends are the benefits of using fibre-reinforced composites to increase specific

A technique is presented to measure the capillary pressure drop DPg during infiltration of non-crimp fabrics by a liquid matrix. Three types of liquids are used: polyethylene glycol (PEG) dissolved in water, a thermoset epoxy resin and a reactive thermopla ...

The integration of shear-thickening fluids (STFs) into composite structures has been investigated with the aim of tuning part stiffness and damping capacity under dynamic deformation. Results from oscillatory rheological measurements for a STF based on con ...

Radical induced cationic frontal polymerisation (RICFP) is considered a promising low energy method for processing of fibre reinforced polymers (FRPs). Optimisation of the local heat balance between reinforcement, epoxy resin and the surrounding mould is r ...

Introduction During pandemics, such as the SARS-CoV-2, filtering facepiece respirators plays an essential role in protecting healthcare personnel. The recycling of respirators is possible in case of critical shortage, but it raises the question of the effe ...

We propose a methodology to monitor the progressive saturation of a non-translucent unidirectional carbon fabric stack through its thickness by means of X-ray radiography and extract the dynamic saturation curves using image analysis. Four constant flow ra ...

The parameters affecting the packing stress of fiber mats for melt impregnation, resin transfer molding and compression molding are systematically investigated. An analytical equation based on local bending of fibers, which was previously derived for non-impregnated networks, is applied to composite mats of dispersed planar bundles impregnated with molten polypropylene. It is shown that many simultaneous mechanisms interact during packing of impregnated bundle mats, in particular when the mats are needled.
