Ferroelectric ceramic – polymer composites have a unique mix of electrical and mechanical properties. Piezoelectric and pyroelectric activity, a wide range of dielectric constants and high breakdown strength are combined with mechanical flexibility, formab ...

The extraordinary property profiles of many biological materials derive from their hierarchical structure and control of order and disorder at different length scales. Application of these concepts to the design of synthetic polymers may provide new routes ...

An impregnation model has been developed to evaluate the infiltration phenomena that occur during a novel near net shape preforming method. This process comprises automated deposition of thermoplastic resin and unidirectional (UD) carbon fibres to a pre-pr ...

Solvent cast and compression molded composite films based on poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene), containing pristine and silylated BaTiO3 particles, were poled, and their electromechanical response (d(33)), their dielectric properties, and the cry ...

In this work, resins based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) epoxy and a latent hardener, dicyandiamide (DICY), as well as carbon fiber (CF) composites based on them, were prepared with three commercial accelerators: a methylene bis (phenyl dimeth ...

The aim of this work is to understand the interactions and interphase formation mechanisms between a liquid aminosilane oligomer (γ -APS) and glass, steel or gold surfaces as a function of the pH of the liquid aminosilane. When basic liquid γ -APS (pH 11.4 ...

Capillarity plays a crucial role in many natural and engineered systems, ranging from nutrient delivery in plants to functional textiles for wear comfort or thermal heat pipes for heat dissipation. Unlike nano- or microfluidic systems with well-defined por ...

Producing high-performance materials from renewable carbon at high efficiency and ensuring a sustainable end-of-life scenario can notably reduce the CO2 footprint of the plastics industry. A recent example of such a material is poly(butylene xylosediglyoxy ...

Adhesion towards glass and interfacial healing of partially supramolecular hybrid polymer networks featuring a range of H-bdnds content were investigated through two dedicated adhesion test methods. In a first series of tests, adhesion strength was measure ...

Thermoset based resins and composites usually exhibit limited ability to be reprocessed due to their highly crosslinked structure, making their reuse and recycling particularly challenging. Strategies to promote the reshaping and reuse of thermoset resins thus hold great promise towards reduction of waste and enhanced circularity. This research aims to develop innovative dynamic composite materials that offer tunable mechanical stiffness and shape adaptability. To this end, dynamic disulfide bonds and ester

When a thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer (TPU) is applied onto galvanized steel by a hot melt process, the subsequent adhesion and its durability are very sensitive to the chemical bonds created at the interface. The effects of several surface treatment ...

This review article provides an overview of the research and applications of soft self-healing polymers and their nanocomposites. A number of concepts based on physical and chemical interactions have been explored to create dynamic and reversible gel and e ...

Nowadays the use of natural fiber composites has gained significant interest due to their low density, high availability, and low cost. The present study explores the development of sustainable 3D printing filaments based on rice husk (RH), an agricultural ...

Banana plants form an abundant source of agricultural waste, which can be exploited to extract fibers. Whereas the trunk and pseudo-stem are currently exploited, leaf ribs, which are several meters long, could form a valuable source of fibers for use in st ...

Microstructural analysis of resin flow in liquid composite molding is impeded by the absence of a characterization method that possesses both the required spatial and time resolution to capture the ongoing phenomena. An optimized UV‐flow freezing methodology is presented to rapidly capture dynamic flow behavior, followed by high‐resolution micro‐computed tomography (μCT) imaging to extract the flow front morphology. Optimisation of the resin strongly enhances the photopolymerisation kinetics, reducing the g

• Efficient bonding and debonding of composite laminates and sandwich structures. • Primer enables on-demand thermal separation of thermoset composite layers. • Co-curing strategy for integrating the primer into high-performance composites. • Process windows were validated via thermo-mechanical characterization. • Assessed the primer effect on sandwich structures’ thermomechanical response. Disassembly of constituent layers in composite laminates remains a major challenge in repair and end-of-life recycling

There is currently considerable interest in developing stiff, strong, tough, and heat resistant poly(lactide) (PLA) based materials with improved melt elasticity in response to the increasing demand for sustainable plastics. However, simultaneous optimizat ...

Frontal polymerization (FP) is increasingly considered as a low-energy alternative to conventional oven curing for manufacturing composites. Although high fiber volume fractions have been successfully manufactured, the impact of FP-induced thermal gradients on residual stress formation remains unclear, preventing the progress in improving the dimensional stability and structural reliability in advanced composites. In this work, internal stresses generated during front propagation in unidirectional carbon fi

As plant fibres are increasingly used in technical textiles and their composites, underlying principles of wound healing in living plant fibres are relevant to product quality, and provide inspiration for biomimetic healing in synthetic materials. In this ...

We demonstrated the localisation of impacts in orthotropic carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite materials to within a few centimetres, using a sparse array of fibre Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. This type of sensor is easily embedded in composit ...
