Grayscale structured surfaces with nanometer-scale features are used in a growing number of applications in optics and fluidics. Thermal scanning probe lithography achieves a lateral resolution below 10 nm and a vertical resolution below 1 nm, but its maxi ...

A new electrically conductive photosensitive composite resist has been formulated and used to build microcomponents. This composite material is based on the SU-8 photopolymer, an insulating negative-tone photoresist, in which silver nano-particles have been dispersed to enhance the electrical properties of the polymer. The properties of this new photosensitive composite have been characterized by optical and electrical measurements. The patterned composite structures can be obtained for a wide range of valu

The diffusion of charged proteins in liquid-filled nanometer-sized apertures with charged surfaces has been investigated with fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS). Based on a two-dimensional (2D) multicomponent diffusion model, key parameters such a ...

A new approach for the realization Of true 3D polymer structures is presented in this paper. It consists in adding, in a post-processing microstereolithography step, 3D polymer microstructures on top of a micropart patterned by means of planar processes such as thin films, bulk silicon etching or high aspect ratio structuration (LIGA, RIE, thick resist). This way, some shape limitations of the planar technologies can be overcomed far the new functional applications. Moreover, the direct processing of micros

Total knee arthroplasty is a widely performed surgical technique. Soft tissue force balancing during the operation relies strongly on the experience of the surgeon in equilibrating tension in the collateral ligaments. Little information on the forces in th ...

Fused deposition modeling (FDM) and melt electrowriting (MEW) are techniques that use polymer fibers as building blocks for printing complex 3D structures, with fibers at the macroscopic and micrometer scale. Here, FDM and MEW are used to produce fibers of ...

In this work we present an instrumented smart knee prosthesis for in-vivo measurement of forces and kinematics. Studying the constraints, we designed minimal sensory systems to be placed in the polyethylene part of the prosthesis. The magnetic sensors and ...

We propose a novel approach to intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement allowing minimal invasive continuous monitoring over prolonged periods, regardless of patient position and activities [1]. The key element of this innovative measurement method is a soft contact lens with a microfabricated strain gage embedded. allowing the measurement of the cornea curvature deformation due to IOP changes. Tests on a eye-simulating device have shown that the sensor is capable of monitoring continuously a deformation of c

In this paper, methods and algorithms are presented for an efficient slicing process specifically designed for microstereolithography, a high-resolution rapid prototyping technology. Modifications are given for different implementation environments (FPU, Parallel Computing, directly wired processes). They use the common STIL-format as the description of the 3D objects and compute bitmapped layers for the layered manufacturing step. Specific attention was paid to the requirements for flexibility, accuracy, s

Volcano-shaped microelectrodes have demonstrated superior performance in measuring attenuated intracellular action potentials from cardiomyocyte cultures. However, their application to neuronal cultures has not yet yielded reliable intracellular access. Th ...

Precise packaging of nanoliter amounts of liquid in a microsystem is important for many biomedical applications. However, existing liquid encapsulation technologies have limitations in terms of liquid waste, evaporation, trapped bubbles, and liquid degrada ...

Over the last two decades, additive manufacturing has been gaining significant attention in tissue engineering and biofabrication research as a versatile class of manufacturing technologies. For biomedical research, high resolution 3D printing techniques, such as melt electrowriting (MEW) are of interest due to their exceptional ability to replicate fine features and complex microarchitecture of native tissues to mimic both their structure and function. 1 Most MEW happens on either flat or tubular collector

Here we show that the transport properties and electrochemical performance of polyelectrolyte membranes are improved through the dispersion of chitosan-wrapped carbon nanotubes, for direct methanol fuel cell applications. Methanol permeability is reduced v ...

Microstereolithography is a new microfabrication process that evolved from the rapid prototyping industry. The first developments in this technology started in 1993 and different research teams around the world have developed microstereolithography machines since. All are based on the manufacturing of parts by a light-induced layer-stacking technique, but different approaches have been followed. This paper reviews the major microstereolithography processes developed until now, and presents the components th

A microfluidic platform is developed for the synthesis of monodisperse, 100 nm, chitosan based nanoparticles using nanogelation with ATP. The resulting nanoparticles tuned and enhanced transport and electrochemical properties of Nafion based nanocomposite ...

In the framework of the EU-supported research project Healthy Aims, we developed a range of novel electrode arrays and related technologies for use in hearing prosthesis. This paper summarizes our ongoing research activities on alternative electrode manufa ...

The study of intracellular communication requires devices that can not only monitor the bioelectric activity, but also control and observe the biochemical environment at the cellular level. This paper reports on the development and characterisation of impl ...

The loss of olfactory function has a profound impact on quality of life, affecting not only sensory perception but also memory, emotion, and overall well-being. Despite this, advancements in olfactory prostheses have lagged significantly behind those made ...

We present here a novel approach to fabricate nanoporous membranes based on the use of sacrificial template structures to individually define pore parameters such as geometry, shape, and placement. Based on this rationale two different nano-fabrication met ...

A method for manufacturing a scintillation detector structure including the steps of forming a plurality of first structures into a surface of a substrate to form a patterned substrate, filling the plurality of first structures and covering the surface of ...
