In this paper, a combined experimental-numerical based work was undertaken to investigate the Bragg wavelength shift response of an embedded FBG sensor when subjected to different conditions of multi-axial loading (deformation). The following cases are exa ...

The authors propose a protocol to derive finite element (FE) models from micro computer tomography scans of implanted rat bone. A semi-automatic procedure allows segmenting the images using specimen-specific bone mineral density (BMD) thresholds. An open-s ...

This experimental study reports effect of tuft geometry i.e., standard tufts and loops milled-down, and tufting pattern on Mode I interlaminar fracture in a GFRP. Standard tufting geometry is responsible for an increase in fracture resistance by 3.5-6 time ...

In this paper, the behaviour of fibre Bragg grating sensors subjected to transversal as well as axial strains is characterized, both in the case of low-birefringent and polarization-maintaining single-mode optical fibres. Two configurations are considered. Firstly, diametrical compression is studied and the results compared to those previously obtained in the literature. Secondly, the sensors are embedded in an epoxy specimen and their response monitored when the latter is subjected to biaxial loading. In b

Fiber bridging is one of the main toughening mechanisms in mode I interlaminar and intralaminar fracture of laminated composites. Intact fibers exert closing forces on both faces of the crack, restraining crack propagation. An effective identification proc ...

Objectives: To validate an experimental setup designed to apply load onto bone tissue using osseointegrated implants in a rabbit model. Specifically, (1) to design an apparatus capable of generating controlled forces, (2) to assess implant placement, maint ...

Purpose. To assess the effect of external mechanical microstimuli of controlled magnitude on the microarchitecture of the peri-implant bone beds in rat tibiae. Materials and Methods. Tibiae of forty rats were fitted with two transcutaneous titanium cylinde ...

Friction welding of wood is an assembly method that is still under investigation and development. A possible application for welded wood joints is the fabrication of multi-layered panels (i.e., cross-laminated panels). In an effort to model the behavior of ...

Bridging by intact fibers is an important toughening mechanism in composite materials. However, a direct experimental evaluation of its contribution is difficult to achieve and in the case of large scale bridging the thickness, h, may have an important inf ...

In this work, the influence of ply thickness on strain energy release rate (ERR) in delamination of carbon epoxy laminates is addressed. Specimens with three ply thicknesses: 0.030, 0.075 and 0.150 mm are tested. While the ERR at onset of crack propagation ...

In many applications elastoplastic composites are used in limited amounts, therefore it is important to have estimates of the size of their representative volume element both for modeling and experimental purposes. In this work the tensile response of part ...

In this work the differences in R-curve response and traction-separation relations due to a finite damage zone or large-scale bridging (LSB) in mode I fracture on double cantilever beams (DCB) were investigated under end opening forces (EOF) and pure momen ...

Internal strain measurements in cross-ply carbon-epoxy composite plates under dynamic loads are carried out using embedded FBG sensors. The principle of the FBG interrogation is based on intensity demodulation achieved via a Fabry-Perot filter. To account ...

In this study, silica glass, optical fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) are used for torque-induced strain monitoring in carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) hollow shafts toward the development of a methodology for structural load monitoring. Optical fibers wi ...

Large scale bridging is an important toughening mechanism in composite laminates that depends on the specimen geometry as well as the constituent materials. In this work, an iterative approach is applied to identify the effect of specimen thickness on trac ...

Bonded fiber reinforced polymers (FRPs) reinforcement systems have traditionally been found to be an efficient method for improving the lifespan of fatigued metallic structures and have attracted much research attention. Nevertheless, the performance of a ...

The mechanical response of the reinforced active alloy Incusil (TM) ABA (R)-SiC is studied. Specimens with up to 27 vol.% SiC particles are produced and tested in tension. The presence of the reinforcement leads to modifications in the alloy mechanical response and microstructure, with a decrease in the volume fraction of Ti-containing phases. To study the in situ response of the matrix material in the composites an inverse homogenization approach is proposed. The identified responses of the matrix material

This study was conducted as part of research line addressing the mechanical response of periodontal ligament (PDL) to tensile-compressive sinusoidal loading The aim of the present project was to determine the effect of three potential sources of variabilit ...
