We are developing an imaging system to detect pre-/early cancers in the tracheo-bronchial tree. Autofluorescence might be useful but many features remain suboptimal. We have studied the autofluorescence of human healthy, metaplastic and dysplastic/CIS bron ...

Although the versatility of photodynamic therapy (PDT) is well established, the technical aspects of light delivery systems vary significantly depending on the targeted organ. This article describes the optical properties of a light and drug delivery syste ...

The changes in the autofluorescence characteristics of the bronchial tissue is of crucial interest as a cancer diagnostic tool. Evidence exists that this native fluorescence or autofluorescence of bronchial tissues changes when they turn dysplastic and to ...

Autofluorescence is emerging as a useful tool for the detection of early cancers in the bronchi. It has already produced interesting results, which have been implemented in commercial imaging devices. Their design relies on the spectroscopy of the tissues ...

Acute coronary syndrome is a life-threatening condition of utmost clinical importance, which, despite recent progress in the field, is still associated with high morbidity and mortality. Acute coronary syndrome results from a rupture or erosion of vulnerab ...

The hydrodynamic rebalancing laser (HRL) procedure is an ophthalmic therapy based on the administration of subthreshold infrared (810 nm) laser light to selected areas on the retina to treat various retina diseases. Heterogeneities of tissue response are o ...

Vascular-targeted low-dose photodynamic therapy (L-PDT) was shown to improve chemotherapy distribution in malignant pleural tumors such as malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). However, the mechanisms triggered by L-PDT on the tumor vasculature are still d ...

Head and neck (H&N) cancer patients have a high incidence of second primary tumors in the tracheobronchial tree. Diagnostic autofluorescence endoscopy (DAFE) has shown promising results in the detection of early neoplastic and pre-neoplastic changes in the bronchi. We have investigated the medical impact of DAFE in a population of H&N cancer patients. The bronchoscopies were performed using a modified commercially available DAFE system, allowing both white light (WL) and autofluorescence (AF) bronchoscopy.

Measuring tissue oxygenation in vivo is of interest in fundamental biological as well as medical applications. One minimally invasive approach to assess the oxygen partial pressure in tissue (pO(2)) is to measure the oxygen-dependent luminescence lifetime ...

Early detection and localisation of bronchial cancer remains a challenging task. One approach is to exploit the changes in the autofluorescence characteristics of the bronchial tissue as a diagnostic tool with improved sensitivity. Evidence exists that this native fluorescence or autofluorescence of bronchial tissues changes when they turn dysplastic and to carcinoma in situ. There is agreement in the literature that the lesions display a decrease in autofluorescence in the green region of the spectrum unde

Autofluorescence bronchoscopy is a promising approach to detect and characterize precancerous and early cancerous lesions. Nevertheless, many spectral features of photodetection systems remain unclear and sub-optimal at the present time. We report here a comprehensive study of the autofluorescence of the human healthy, metaplastic, dysplastic and cancerous bronchial tissues, covering a range of excitation wavelengths going from 350 nm to 480 nm. Moreover, the absolute values of these tissue autofluorescence

The measurement of Protoporphyrin IX delayed fluorescence lifetime is a minimally invasive method for monitoring the levels of oxygen in cells and tissues. The excitation of Protoporphyrin IX during this measurement can lead to the formation of photoproduc ...

Protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) is used as a fluorescence marker and photosensitizing agent in photodynamic therapy (PDT). A temporary increase of PpIX in tissues can be obtained by administration of 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA). Lipophilicity is one of the key pa ...

Fluorescence cystoscopy (FC) efficiently enhances the detection and improves the therapeutic management of early bladder cancer. During an FC, about 150 ml of water is needed to inflate the bladder. The water is quickly diluted by urine which can be fluore ...

Fluorescence cystoscopy enhances detection of early bladder cancer. Water used to inflate the bladder during the procedure rapidly contains urine, which may contain fluorochromes. This frequently degrades fluorescence images. Samples of bladder washout flu ...

Photodynamic therapy based on photoactivable porphyrins (PAPs) can treat various dermatological conditions. The side-effects as well as the non-selective or insufficient accumulation of PAPs in the targeted tissues limit performances. We studied the stabil ...

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) based on the use of photoactivable porphyrins, such as protoporphyrin IX (PpIX), induced by the topical application of amino-levulinic acid (ALA) or its derivatives, ALA methyl-ester (m-ALA), is a treatment for superficial basal ...

Summary Background Photodynamic therapy (PDT) with precursors of photoactivable porphyrins is a well-established treatment modality for skin pathologies as well as hair removal. Pain is a major side effect thereof, and it affects the treatment compliance a ...

The availability of reproducible, convenient, and inexpensive model organisms able to generate predictable levels of endogenous porphyrins, including protoporphyrin IX (PpIX), is essential in photomedicine research. Saccharomyces cerevisiae produces endoge ...
