This paper presents a novel technological and design study of optical guided- wave MicroElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS) switch. We work on a concept of hermetic assembly in which a MEMS wafer is covered (top-down) by a crossing optical waveguide wafer. Th ...

Here we present the development and characterization of a flexible implantable neural probe with glassy carbon electrode arrays. The use of carbon electrodes allows for these devices to be used as chemical sensors, in addition to their typical use as elect ...

An entire microsystem for high accuracy magnetic field measurement based on vertical Hall devices has been simulated. In accordance with existing knowledge about semiconductor physics and experimental results, a functional SPICE- model for a vertical Hall device has been developed. This model was then applied to simulate an existing high accuracy magnetometer, including temperature and non-linearity compensation. The comparison of simulated and measured results shows that the real physical effects as well a

We present an electrical impedance based biosensor on a microfluidic cell culture platform that enables label-free and re- al-time investigation of drug toxicity-induced effects on hepatocytes. The temporal evolution of the impedance at different frequenci ...

In this work, we report a nanofluidic gating mechanism that uses the thermal effect for modulating the ionic transport inside nanofluidic channels. The control of the ionic transport inside a nanochannel is demonstrated using electrical conductivity. A the ...

A new approach for the realization of true 3D polymer structures is presented in this paper. It consists in adding, in a post-processing microstereolithography step, 3D polymer microstructures on top of a micropart patterned by means of planar processes such as thin films, bulk silicon etching or high aspect ratio structuration (LIGA, RIE, thick resist). In this way, some shape limitations of the planar technologies can be overcome for new functional applications. Moreover, the direct processing of microste

Dielectrophoresis is a method that has demonstrated great potential in cell discrimination and isolation. In this study, the dielectrophoretic sorting of normal and Babesia bovis infected erythrocytes was performed using a microfabricated flow cytometer. S ...

We present a novel study on label-free recognition and distinction of drug resistant breast cancer cells (MCF-7 DOX) from their parental cells (MCF-7 WT) via impedimetric measurements. Drug resistant cells exhibited significant differences in their dielect ...

This paper reports on a novel method for on-chip continuous separation of divid- ing and non-dividing cells based on differences in their dielectric properties. By means of two opposite dielectrophoretic force fields at multiple frequencies, the two populations of cells flowing through the microfluidic device are focused towards distinct equilibrium positions, which can be correlated to their cell cycle.

By enhancing the environment of micro electrode arrays with microfluidic channels we cultured primary neuronal cells in patterned two- and three dimensional structures. Alternatively, the same microfluidic channels can be used to generate a local chemical stimulation over a two-dimensional neuronal cell culture. We demonstrate that a significantly different of spontaneous activity pattern was recorded from the same neuronal cell culture under perfusion of 4.5μM bicuculline at 20 nl/s and 200 nl/s.

A new electrically conductive photosensitive composite resist has been formulated and used to build microcomponents. This composite material is based on the SU-8 photopolymer, an insulating negative-tone photoresist, in which silver nano-particles have been dispersed to enhance the electrical properties of the polymer. The properties of this new photosensitive composite have been characterized by optical and electrical measurements. The patterned composite structures can be obtained for a wide range of valu

The diffusion of charged proteins in liquid-filled nanometer-sized apertures with charged surfaces has been investigated with fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS). Based on a two-dimensional (2D) multicomponent diffusion model, key parameters such a ...

Background: In age related macular degeneration and inherited dystrophies, preservation of retinal ganglion cells has been demonstrated. This finding has led to the development of various models of subretinal or epiretinal implant in order to restore visio ...

Within the overall objective of developing a low dead volume technology for basic microfluidic valving, shunting and switching functionalities, the use of microbubbles is proposed. As a case study, a normally-closed, bubble-based microvalve design is presented. The valve, implemented using an all-Pyrex technology, can withstand high pressures limited only by the degree to which the vertical etch rate of Pyrex can be controlled. Measurements made on several prototypes show valve breaking pressures of approxi

Anti-coagulation treatments are required for medical conditions that become more and more frequent with the ageing of the population in developed countries (atrial fibrillation, deep-venous thrombosis, heart prosthetic valves, etc.). These treatments gener ...

Using the concept of insulator-based "electrodeless" dielectrophoresis, we present a novel geometry for shaping electric fields to achieve lateral deviation of particles in liquid flows. The field is generated by lateral planar metal electrodes and is guid ...

We present in this paper an integrated cavity-backed patch antenna operating at 75 GHz. The design was optimized using a full-wave software based on the integral-equation method. The antenna was realized using micromachining technologies on two wafers: a s ...

Contamination with arsenic is a recurring problem in both industrialized and developing countries. Drinking water supplies for large populations can have concentrations much higher than the permissible levels (for most European countries and the United Sta ...

Total knee arthroplasty is a widely performed surgical technique. Soft tissue force balancing during the operation relies strongly on the experience of the surgeon in equilibrating tension in the collateral ligaments. Little information on the forces in th ...
