Recent techniques open new perspectives for distributed fiber sensing. Pulse coding and multi-dimensional denoising methods result in a >10 dB noise reduction with minor modifications of the experimental layout. ...

Spontaneously broadened emission from a distributed feedback laser diode perated just above threshold is used as a pump source in Brillouin slow light systems. The pump spectrum could this way be extended to several GHz. ...

Fibre sensing has reached an interesting turning point today: a clearer assessment about promises that were really held and those that failed to convince can be envisioned. A choice of key fibre sensing techniques will be reviewed and a critical discussion ...

Delaying and advancement of optical pulses using stimulated Brillouin scattering in As2Se3 fiber is demonstrated. Pulses can be delayed by 37 ns in a 5-m-long fiber with a pump power as low as 60 mW. ...

Brillouin gain is observed in hollow core fibers filled by standard gases at high pressure. This enables all interactions based on stimulated Brillouin scattering to be realized in hollow core fibers, such as amplification, optical signal processing and di ...

The design, fabrication and characterization of CMOS-compatible optoelectronic devices is discussed. All devices are fabricated on silicon on insulator (SOI) substrates which makes them suitable for three-dimensional (3-D) telecommunication photonic integr ...

We propose a microelectromechanical systems-based tunable asymmetric Fabry-Perot cavity for the high-precision weighing of macro samples. The device is based on an in-plane design and is structured in a silicon-on-insulator substrate. The cavity length of ...

We present a novel distributed sensing technique that allows for the observation of Brillouin gain spectral distribution and acoustic decay time in photonic crystal fiber as well as in standard single-mode fiber. ...

We demonstrate that an optical fibre current sensor can measure current over 500 kA with an accuracy of 0.2%. This level of accuracy has never previously been achieved using a traditional non-optical sensor

The moisture content in concrete is a critical parameter for most of the degradation processes such as shrinkage and cracking. In this paper, we present the first kilometre-range thermo-hygrometer for monitoring the concrete curing. ...

The sixty-two papers in this special issue were presented at the 26th International Conference on Optical Fibre Sensors (OFS-26). ...

2021 will likely witness the advent of low loss hollow-core optical fibers outperforming the classical solid core fibers. This will be a revolutionary breakthrough, primarily for longer distance telecommunications with drastically reduced distortions and cross-talks for a higher density of information, but also for distributed fiber sensing that may enter into a new dimension by exploiting the huge flexibility of a customizable gaseous medium.

A fundamental limitation in high-resolution and long-range Brillouin optical time-domain systems is overcome in this paper, enabling 500k resolved points over 25 km of SMF with 5 cm spatial resolution in a usual acquisition time.

These past few years the steady demand from end users has deeply stimulated the research in the field of distributed fibre sensors based on stimulated Brillouin scattering. Some recent progresses are here reported, pushing the limits beyond what has been c ...

An analytical expression to estimate the uncertainty on the frequency shift in ϕ-OTDR systems is established and confirmed by actual data. ...

This paper presents the measurement accuracy of a phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer (ϕ-OTDR) as a function of SNR and pulse width. A method to determine the absolute SNR of a ϕ-OTDR system is also proposed. ...
