This paper presents the modeling, detailed simulation, and test of an efficient medium-voltage adjustable-speed drive. The system consists of a three-level neutral-point-clamped inverter supplied by a 12-pulse rectifier. To achieve a motor-friendly supply, ...

The present paper describes the modeling of 3-level Unified Power Flow Controllers (UPFC) with their control systems for studying the steady-state and transient behavior of electrical networks equipped with FACTS devices. The control features of these devi ...

This paper deals with the modeling of multi-winding transformers. Based on the real example of a railway DC - supply, a modeling methodology is presented as the original part of the paper. Afterwards two application examples of multi-winding phase shifting transformers (18 and 24 pulse) are described, these applications have been simulated using the SIMSEN simulation software package [1,2]. Harmonics analysis of simulation results (elimination of low order harmonics 5, 7, 11, 13) has validated the proposed

This paper presents a combined analytical and FEM method for prediction of the no-load voltage waveform of laminated salient-pole synchronous generators. The described method takes into account saturation effects as well as the damper bar currents due to t ...

This paper presents the start-up and synchronization procedures of a variable-speed pump-turbine unit of 250 MW in pumping mode. These procedures applied to a doubly-fed induction motor-generator with three-level voltage source inverters VSI cascade in the rotor side, can be achieved without any supplementary equipment. The control strategy used in the start-up procedure and based on a stator flux oriented control, is described in details as well as different steps in order to reach the minimal speed requir

The article presents a fully automated identification method for the determination of the sub-subtransient, subtransient and transient characteristic parameters of large synchronous machines. The software allows for an identification of the parameters based on the measurements of the terminal currents during a three-phase short-circuit as defined in the international standards. Based on the identified parameters the equivalent circuit diagram (ecd) is established and it can be used as model of the synchrono

The paper deals with the determination of synchronous machine parameters using a 2D Finite Element Method – FEM (Flux2D- Cedrat). Simulations of no-load sudden three phase short- circuits are performed in rotation, the saturation effects and the eddy curre ...

This paper describes a novel and patented air-gap monitoring system for large low speed synchronous hydro-generators. This new system is based on inductive sensors, it is able to measure in real time a static or a dynamic rotor eccentricity, a stator or a ...

The goal of the paper was to analyze the current distribution of a high-power salient-pole synchronous machine damper winding. A few methods were considered but only two analytical methods are highlighted. Both methods arc based on parameter calculation by ...

The goal of this paper is to propose and validate standstill DC-Decay measuring methods for a rotor in arbitrary position. The first new method (DC-Decay I) delivers the equivalent circuit with a few measurements. The second new method (DC-Decay III) permi ...

This paper describes a stator flux oriented control strategy using state space controllers. The optimal determination of the different controllers parameters leads to an independent control of the stator flux and the torque. The effects of undesired offsets on the calculated stator flux are discussed and a solution for eliminating these offset is presented Verification by computer simulation and results of the control implementation on a Motorola DSP 56002 are presented

The main obstacle to a wide use of dc-Decay tests lies in the necessity to align the rotor with the d- or q-axis, which is very difficult to perform for high-power units. The goal of this paper is to propose and validate standstill dc-Decay measuring metho ...

Using a finite element (FE) model of the electrical machine in a grid solver enables us to take the machine nonlinearities into account with great precision in the simulation of a complete system. Three methods are usually used for linking the grid and FE ...

The current source thyristor inverter is still today a suitable choice for supplying high power adjustable speed drives for pumps or compressors. This paper presents a 12-pulse LCI (load commutated inverter) synchronous drive for a 20 MW compressor, it foc ...

The present paper presents an automatic approach for the determination of the parameters of laminated salient-pole synchronous machines, based on 2D finite element method (FEM). Calculations using FEM are performed in rotation (sudden three-phase short-circuit) and at standstill, for different positions of the rotor and for different frequencies. A comparison between results obtained by both methods is presented. of different algorithms. A further step would be to take into account saturation effects, and t

slanded power networks comprising a small number of large power plants are subject to perturbations leading to important transients, and, hence need high performance governors. The design of these governors requires a detailed model of the system. This is ...

This paper deals with a fixed-frequency variable-speed motor/generator with 3-level VSI (Voltage Source Inverter) cascade. The 3-level VSI is applied to a DASM (Doubly-fed ASynchronous Machine) for large pump storage plants. The extension to 3 levels is th ...

Large low speed hydro-generators (Fig. 1) have a very small specific air-gap to stator bore diameter ratio making it virtually impossible to have a perfect centering of the rotor within the stator during the assembly process. Therefore the machines are ope ...

The LCI (Load commutated Inverter) is still today a suitable solution for supplying high power variable speed drive systems. The following main topics are described in this contribution: The modeling of a 20 MW LCI synchronous drive system for a compressio ...
