This article presents the modeling, simulation, and practical application of a double-fed asynchronous motor-generator for pumped-storage plants equipped with a three-level VSI cascade. The problem of DC unbalance control is studied in this particular appl ...

The present paper addresses the use of a Windows™ DLL to simulate the real code of a DSP for faster development time and advanced testing, especially in high power systems. The development of power system control usually starts with simulations and the development of the control is done with the simulation tool native blocs. Once the control is validated in simulation it is usually C coded into a DSP and real test can be performed. The present paper introduces a way of simulating the real DSP code to fill t

This paper presents a real-time extension, called SIMSEN-RT, of the simulation software SIMSEN. SIMSEN-RT allows carrying out hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulations of power systems using hardware regulators. It can therefore be used to fine-tune regulator ...

The digital transient torque measuring device presented in this paper is able to make a "real time" calculation in steady-state and transient conditions of the electromagnetic torque or force of an extremely wide range of ac electrical machines supplied with sinusoidal voltages or through frequency converters with frequencies up to 30 kHz. The device needs no shaft position or speed sensors, it uses exclusively the acquisition of the stator currents and voltages. The main fields of applications are: test sh

The eigenvalues analysis method is generally applied to synchronous machines by using d,q-components. This paper presents the application of this method on an equivalent model for the synchronous machine based on phase variables a,b,c instead of d,q-components. The advantages of this approach, essential for programs using phase variables as state variables, are presented. The application of this method to a complete hydroelectric production site including hydraulic components (pump-turbine, penstock, galler

Variable speed pump-turbine units have become nowadays an interesting way to increase stability of electrical power networks due to their high level of operating flexibility. Different advantages offered by variable speed pump-turbine units for both pumpin ...

This paper deals with the modeling of multi-windings transformers. Based on a real example, a modeling methodology is presented. This methodology is the original part of the paper. Application examples of multi-windings phase shifting transformers (18 and ...

An unbalanced DC-link voltage regulation strategy is proposed for a three-level voltage source inverter used in the rotor cascade of a double-fed asynchronous motor-generator. The major problem in determining the presence of the unbalanced component is inv ...

The current source thyristor inverter is still today a suitable choice for supplying high power adjustable speed drives for pumps or compressors. This paper presents a 12-pulse LCI (load commutated inverter) synchronous drive for a 20 MW compressor, it focuses on the following main aspects: modeling of the complete drive system, numerical simulation and comparison between calculated and measured values of the pulsating torque components in steady-state operations. The modeling of the six- phase synchronous

Nowadays, multilevel VSIs (Voltage Source Inverter) begin to be widely used in middle and high power installations such as variable speed drives, FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission System) and windformers for example. In these systems, 2 VSIs are put back to back to create a frequency converter. The present paper will investigate the entry level VSI of such a frequency converter, by comparing classical control and state-space control applied to this VSI.

The use of a static frequency converter which is inserted between the grid and the stator is a well known solution to achieve an adjustable speed machine. Adjustable speed drive systems have already been applied in the past to hydro power plants. Up to now they have mainly been used for start-up purposes of pumps or pump-turbines. The used converters were therefore rather small in respect of converter power output (

The paper deals with the main problems to solve in order to simulate precisely the behavior of complex power systems with mixed elements (power components and digital regulation devices). The main features of an efficient simulation tool are described. They are focused on modern adjustable speed drives. Finally, the simulation of an industrial application of an induction motor fed by a three-level inverter tuned with a DTC (Direct Torque Control) is presented in details.

The paper deals with the main problems to solve in order to simulate precisely the behavior of complex power systems with mixed elements (power components and digital regulation devices). A simulation tool developed at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology is shortly described. Finally, an industrial application of an induction motor fed by a three-level inverter tuned with a DTC (Direct Torque Control) is presented.

The present paper describes a stator flux oriented control strategy using state space controllers. The optimal determination of different controllers'parameters (suitable placement of poles, continuous adapation of coefficients to the operating point of the drive) leads to an independent control of the stator flux and the torque in different operating conditions, and consequently to good dynamic performances of the drive. The effectiveness of the proposed system is verified by computer simulation. The contr

The present paper deals with a new approach for the study of the steady-state and transient behaviour of phase transformers. This approach based on magnetic equivalent circuit diagrams, takes into account the nonlinear B-H curves as well as zero-sequence f ...

The present paper describes the modelling and the prediction of the steady-state or transient behaviour of different modern variable-speed drives and electrical networks. The necessity of a performant numerical simulation tool in order to guarantee an optimized design is illustrated by examples based on existing large variable- speed drives and power plants.

In the context of a sustainable development the optimal use of the electrical energy will require advanced networks allowing interconnections on very long distances and addressing the storage challenge. These requirements are essentially due to the following reasons: - Electrical energy, contrary to most other kind of energies, must be simultaneously produced and consumed, because it is not possible to store directly large amounts of it. - Electrical energy is generated to a large extent by thermal power pl
