This study presents a comprehensive analysis on the energy demand and supply of typical European city centers for present time and 2050 horizon according to the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) climatic scenario A1B. Building and urban arc ...

Standard and newly designed building blocks for complex urban sites-also designated by urban archetypes - are used in this study to quantify the influence of urban forms on their energy demand and energy systems design. An energy hub, which consists on a m ...

Relatively recent cultural and technological changes, particularly in Westernized societies, have led to habitat and lifestyle shifts that have gradually estranged us from daylight. Although human beings are resilient and appear able to cope with extreme variations in environmental and living conditions, this process of separation can have negative impacts on health and well-being. Further research is essential in order to understand the impact of these changes and to initiate corrective measures, from chan

We previously developed a Camera-Like Light Sensor (CLLS) to record images using a novel High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging vision sensor. The device was equipped with customized filters for adapting the camera’s spectral sensitivity to both photopic and cir ...

Integrating renewable energy technologies based on solar PV (SPV) and wind energy in the energy system is challenging due to time dependence of the energy potential for these energy sources. Grid integrated hybrid energy systems combining SPV panels, wind ...

Suboptimal light distribution in a room can cause visual discomfort and glare. Next to rods and cones, perception of light is also governed by a third class of photoreceptors, important for circadian rhythm regulation and non-visual functions such as alertness, mood and hormonal secretion. These receptors show greatest sensitivity in the blue part of the visible light spectrum. In order to assess light distribution with respect to non-visual sensitivity functions, we aimed at validating a new device to crea

Physical or virtual models are commonly used to visualize the conceptual ideas of architects, lighting designers and researchers; they are also employed to assess the daylighting performance of buildings, particularly in cases where Complex Fenestration Sy ...

Novel electrochromic glazing technology has been identified as an emerging option for reducing cooling and lighting electricity demand. As this technology is particularly promising for office building we assess the related technical energy saving potential ...

To determine the optimum location for non dispatchable renewable energy systems, this study comes up with an integrated tool to place energy systems considering distributed energy demand and renewable energy potential. The Citysim urban energy planning sof ...

This article quantifies the energy saving potential and robustness of nine energy retrofitting measures,as well as four combinations of these, for residential building stocks of three major cities in Swedenand for five scenarios of future climatic conditio ...

For building integration of solar-powered energy systems, aesthetic aspects play an important role. Covering a standard solar collector with a coloured glazing, opaque to the human eye but highly transparent to solar energy, permits a perfect architectural integration of solar thermal panels into glazed building façades. The thermal energy produced can be used for both solar heating and cooling, as well as for domestic hot water. The principle of the coloured appearance is based on interference in the thin-

This study presents a comprehensive analysis of typical European city centers energy demand and supply for present time and 2050, according to the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) climatic scenario A1B. Two multi-family houses are modeled, ...

Outdoor human comfort is an important factor in the evaluation of the liveability of a city as well as for promoting people’s health and well-being. In hot arid climates in particular, urban planning and design can considerably impact the day-to-day therma ...

Cities are complex dynamic entities. From a thermodynamic perspective, they represent open systems, constantly importing and exporting energy and matter across their boundaries; the output invariably being less ordered due to irreversible internal processe ...

Because of the global warming, urban planning strategies must be investigated to reduce the building energy consumption and increase the thermal comfort in cities. In the framework of Energy Strategy 2050 of Switzerland, this research aim to highlight the ...

Urban areas are facing a growing deployment of solar photovoltaic and thermal technologies on building envelopes, both on roofs and on façades. An effective solar energy planning process considers social acceptance, in relation to the landscape alteration ...

Evaluation of solar heat gain and daylight distribution through complex window and shading systems requires the determination of the bi-directional transmission distribution function (BTDF). Measurement of BTDF can be time-consuming, and inaccuracies are likely because of physical constraints and experimental adjustments. A general calculation methodology, based on more easily measurable component properties, would be preferable and would allow much more flexibility. In this paper, measurements and calculat

As the impact of climate change progresses, heat waves are expected to increase significantly in the future. Coupled with the urban heat island effect, this will tend to have a major impact on the comfort of the inhabitants in urban areas. It is thus cruci ...

This study aims to investigate the role of distributed generation through the energy hub concept and refurbishment of existing buildings. More specifically, a computational platform combining (i) the urban energy modelling tool CitySimPro and (ii) the micr ...
