The Solar Energy and Building Physics Laboratory of the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) has been involved in research and technological development of solar energy for building applications since the middle of the seventies. Focusing first ...

Energy storage is generally considered as a means to bridge a period between when/where energy is available and when/where it is in demand. Storage plays an important role by providing flexibility to energy systems, increasing the potential to accommodate ...

High-technology glazing panes are designed to meet the need for natural light, while optimizing key functions such as reducing solar heat gain in spaces and/or redirecting daylight to the rear of the spaces. However, the actual performance in terms of both ...

The objective of the Green Lighting project was to develop a High Performance Integrated Lighting System, based on advanced technologies for day- and electric lighting, achieving a Lighting Power Density (LPD) that does not exceed 3 W/m2. The project has revealed that Anidolic Daylighting Systems (ADS) are an ideal basis for High Performance Integrated Lighting Systems. Not only are they able to provide adequate illumination (i.e. sufficiently high illuminances) in office rooms during large fractions of nor

The appropriate choice of the type of glazing and glazed area in a façade depends on many factors. They include amongst other criteria: location, orientation, climatic condition, energetic efficiency, usage of the building, required user comfort, and the architectural concept. All requirements cannot be fulfilled at all times and priorities have to be set to find a compromise between occupant comfort, design objective, cost and energetic efficiency. An innovative glazing system combining daylighting, glare

In sighted humans, light intensity, timing, exposure duration, and spectral composition of light are important to entrain the endogenous circadian pacemaker to the 24-h day-night cycle. We tested the impact of two realistic office lighting conditions durin ...

Thin films on glazing play an important role in the design of solar energy conversion systems as thermal collectors or photovoltaic panels. Antireflective coatings based on porous silicon dioxide are well established in the field of solar collector glazing ...

Most energy saving applications of advanced fenestration systems (solar blinds, novel types of glazing and daylight redirecting devices) require a precise knowledge of their directional light transmission features. These photometric properties can be described by a Bi-directional Transmission Distribution Function (BTDF) whose experimental assessment requires appropriate equipment. A novel bi-directional transmission photogoniometer, based on digital imaging techniques, was designed and set up for that purp

This paper presents a novel method to predict the outdoor ground surface temperature, which can be useful in the estimation of urban heat islands (UHI) eect. A model is developed based on a multi-layer ground surface energy balance calculated on an hourly timestep. It makes use of a shortwave and a longwave irradiation model, evapotranspiration model and an energy ux model in the soil. The latter is based on an electrical analogy using resistances and capacitances (thermal-RC model). The resulting ground su

Coatings for thermal solar energy conversion have to be abrasion-resistant, stable at elevated temperatures, and often have to protect the substrate against corrosion. Due to the conditions of refractive index matching between the substrate and the ambient ...

Overheating is a common problem both with the use of active and passive solar energy in thermal solar energy systems and in highly glazed buildings. In solar thermal collectors, the elevated temperatures occurring during stagnation result in reduced lifeti ...

Among the century’s main challenges, climate change and the need for energy sources diversification are of great importance. In this context, renewable energies undoubtedly have an important role to play. Photovoltaic (PV) electricity is especially well su ...

Lighting simulation plays a significant role in the architectural design and evaluation of performance parameters of buildings. The general method of assuming a virtual sky in lighting simulation may lead to mismatch with the real situation, which conventi ...

Street networks can be visualized in various ways depending on the purpose. Here we introduce (in the present context) a new technique for visualizing the orientation of street networks in relation to complex topography. The technique is tested on the city ...

The Swiss Minergie®-standard is, by the number of labelled buildings (> 20'000) one of the most successful building energy labels in the world. It is obviously a strong incentive for designing comfortable, low energy buildings. This standard is now valid for temperate - cold climates only. There is therefore a need for a similar standard for buildings dominated by cooling loads, as it is common in the tropical and sub-tropical climates of the world. Since the new EPFL campus planned in Ras al Kaimah (United

The study aims to analyse the heating and cooling demand of the An Najah university campus, and to optimize the building envelope for selected buildings, in order to achieve energy efficiency, and make use of renewable solar energy. Building and urban simu ...

The History and Heritage of Daylighting Design in Architecture Daylight contributes to the quality of architectural spaces and provides most of the necessary lighting provision to building occupants together with a premium spectral composition and temporal variability. The heritage of wonderful and exemplary daylit buildings, left by the early designers of the past centuries, is a remaining proof (Baker and Steemers, 2002); it triggered a long history of scientific research and technological developments (I

Handling data needed by Building Energy Simulation (BES) tools can be a tedious task, especially at the urban scale. Besides BES, users often have different needs (building energy use, human comfort, integration of renewables, urban planning…) in mind when ...

Covering a standard solar thermal collector with a coloured glazing, which is opaque to the human eye but highly transparent to solar energy, permits a perfect architectural integration of solar panels into glazed building façades. The colours are based on ...

A novel method is introduced in this study to consider flexibility taking into account both system design and operation strategy by using fuzzy logic. A stochastic optimization algorithm is introduced to optimize the system design and operation strategy of ...
