There still exists a large gap between simulation work and industrial applications in the context of control and optimization of solid-oxide fuel-cell (SOFC) systems. In an effort to bridge this gap, this study describes the experimental implementation of ...

New extensions and features to the remote laboratories currently used for undergraduate courses in automatic control laboratory at the School of Engineering of University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland are presented. This paper shows how ...

Herein we report a multi-zone, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) control case study of an industrial plant responsible for cooling a hospital surgery center. The adopted approach to guaranteeing thermal comfort and reducing electrical energy ...

Wearable supervision systems ease the deployment of advanced mobile solutions for the control of industrial plants. These systems are used to provide operators with the adequate information to perform the required manual operations on industrial plants. Th ...

The ability to integrate multiple learning applications from different organizations allows sharing resources and reducing costs in the deployment of learning systems. In this sense, Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) is the main current leading technol ...

Remote laboratories are software and hardware tools that allow students to remotely access real equipment located in universities. The integration of remote laboratories in learning tools (learning management systems, content man- agement systems, or perso ...

Hands-on laboratory sessions are one of the pillars of science and engineering education. It is reputed that institu- tions find it difficult to provide enough laboratory setups that cover all taught scientific topics due to logistical and budgetary limita ...

Portability, flexibility and extensibility are essential features of social media platforms. When such Web platforms are able to take user's context into account, they provide better user experience and enhance the effectiveness of users' actions. In this ...

A new approach to developing Web-enabled environments for remote diagnostics, maintenance, and experimentation in engineering is based on a middleware layer that uses a Java-Internet-Labview server to provide communication between Java programs and Labview ...

This paper discusses the 3A recommender system that targets CSCL (computer-supported collaborative learning) and CSCW (computer-supported collaborative work) environments. The proposed system models user interactions in a heterogeneous graph. Then, it appl ...

In this paper, we propose a personalized and contextual ranking algorithm implemented on top of the 3A interaction model. The latter is a generic model intended for designing and describing social and collaborative learning platforms integrating Actors, As ...

This paper presents the Smart Device specification to interface with remote labs. To encourage the broader sharing of remote labs, the Smart Device paradigm decouples the client from the server and provides well-defined interfaces between client and server ...

This paper presents the approach taken to give engineering students the necessary competencies and facilities to implement real-time control solutions. This goal is achieved first by way of an introduction to the basic principles underlying real-time control. Then, by motivating the use of personal computers as a versatile alternative to more traditional implementation equipment. Finally, by combining LabVIEW and DAQ boards to form an integrated framework for fast prototyping of real-time control solutions.

The paper presents a novel approach to conduct laboratory experiments in relation with the Control class taught at EPFL. The existing laboratory interface built as a Java applet, which allows students to access experimentation devices locally or remotely, ...

SpiderCrane is a three-dimensional crane, whose main particularity lies in the absence of large inertial moving parts. This paper presents experimental results obtained with the novel jet-scheduling control methodology that is based on differential flatnes ...

Despite the extreme diversity of Web applications, one can find similarities among them. This paper proposes an answer to the question of knowing whether it is possible to conceptually represent different Web applications in a common manner such that they ...

From e-commerce to social networking sites, recommender systems are gaining more and more interest. They provide connections, news, resources, or products of interest. This paper presents a federated recommender system, which exploits data from different o ...

The increasing adoption of remote laboratories in education along with the shift from eLearning 2.0 towards eLearning 3.0, have demanded several considerations in their implementation and delivery format. In response to these needs, this contribution intro ...

In the framework of the PALETTE European research project, the Swiss federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) is designing and experimenting with eLogbook, a Web-based collaborative environment designed for communities of practice. It enables users to manage joint activities, share related assets and get contextual awareness. In addition to the original Web-based access, an email-based eLogbook interface is developed. The purpose of this lightweight interface is twofold. First, it eases eLogbook a

By providing various services, such as Incentive-based Demand Response (IBDR), buildings can play a crucial role in the energy market due to their significant energy consumption. However, effectively commissioning buildings for such desired functionalities ...
