In this study, simulation of solar disinfection of secondary effluents was performed, to assess the dose effects, as instructed by the reciprocity law. A full factorial experimental design on the operational parameters of the process was performed (time, temperature, bacterial load, light intensity) and three response variables were estimated (disinfection efficiency, regrowth after 24, and 48. h). In the 240 disinfection experiments, an erratic behavior was observed in all responses to light exposure, attr

Sonochemical elimination of organic pollutants can take place through two degradation pathways. Molecules with relatively large Henry’s law constants will be incinerated inside the cavitation bubble, while nonvolatile molecules with low Henry’s law constan ...

This paper addresses recent developments in the design, evaluation, and characterization of flexible, uniform polyethylene-TiO2 (PE-TiO2), TiO2-In2O3, and TiO2-polyester able to inactivate bacteria under band gap irradiation and in the dark. The preparatio ...

The study addresses the degradation of Indole under low intensity solar simulated light. The first evidence is presented for sputtered films degrading Indole at the solid-air interface. The co-sputtering of FeOx-TiO2 on polyethylene (PE) leads to an accele ...

Thirteen different commercial TiO2 powders with specific surface areas varying from 9 to 335 m/g and with isoelectric points (IEP) from 3 to 7.5 were investigated for their catalytic activity in E. coli inactivation. The TiO2 samples zeta potential, attenu ...

Ag-ZrN films were deposited on polyester by direct current pulsed magnetron sputtering (from now on DCMSP) in Ar + N-2 atmosphere. ZrN on the polyester surface interacts with Ag leading to Ag-ZrN films. These composite films were more active in Escherichia ...

Succinic acid was used as a spacer to bind titanium dioxide onto nylon as a new approach to develop self-cleaning fibers. Photoinduced decomposition of stains was achieved within acceptable times under ultraviolet A irradiation, a component of both solar l ...

Ag–TaN sputtered on polyester (PES) accelerated >6 times the bacterial inactivation kinetics compared to TaN–PES under actinic light irradiation. Direct current pulsed magnetron sputtering (DCP) was used to sputter Ag–TaN–PES and TaN–PES. Complete bacterial reduction by Ag–TaN occurred within 20 min compared to Ag–TiN (100 min) and Ag–ZrN (90 min). The co-sputtering of Ag and Ta on PES was carried out in an Ar/N2 10% atmosphere. By ion-coupled plasma mass-spectrometry (ICP–MS) a reduced Ag-release was obser

The light-induced degrdn. of Tinopal DMS-X, a stilbene type fluorescence whitening agent (FWA) which is quite resistant to biodegrdn., is described. This substance has been chosen for the study of the titania-induced degrdn. of polycyclic stilbenes since it is one of the most important compd. of its class found in a variety of washing effluents. TiO2-irradiated suspensions affected the complete mineralization within 2 h in spite of the low coverage of the TiO2 surface used during this study. Adding H2O2 as

Solar disinfection (SODIS) was probed for its underlying mechanism. When Escherichia coli was exposed to UVA irradiation, the dominant solar fraction acting in SODIS process, cells exhibited a shoulder before death ensued. This profile resembles cell killi ...

Bacterial inactivation by TiO2, Cu and TiO2/Cu DC-magnetron sputtered thin films was systematically investigated in the dark and under low intensity visible/actinic light. Low intensity actinic light led to a fast 6log10 (complete) bacterial inactivation w ...

The electrochem. oxidn. of phenol for wastewater treatment was studied on doped SnO2 anodes. Anal. of reaction intermediates and a C balance showed that the main reaction is oxidn. of phenol to CO2. This unexpected behavior of the SnO2 anode is explained by a change of the chem. structure of the electrode surface during anodic polarization. [on SciFinder (R)]

In this second part of the development of a mechanistic kinetic model of the solar inactivation of E. coli enhanced with hydrogen peroxide, we evaluate the mechanisms based on photonic inactivation and integrate them into the kinetic model of the dark proc ...

The electro-oxidn. of 1,4-benzoquinone in water soln. was investigated. The benzoquinone concn., intermediate products, dissolved org. C (DOC), COD, and toxicity of the oxidized soln. was monitored during oxidn. with Ti/IrO2 and Ti/SnO2 anodes (in the following text: IrO2 and SnO2 anodes). It was found that the most important parameter is the nature of the anode. With the IrO2 anode, primary oxidn. was attained, i.e. benzene ring rupture occurred, resulting in an accumulation of carboxylic acids formation a

The present manuscript is a conceptual review concerning the photo-Fenton reaction at near-neutral pH, used for bacterial inactivation. In this first Part, an overview of the mechanisms involved, as well as the fundamental concepts governing the near-neutr ...

Binary oxide semiconductors TiO2-ZrO2 and Cu-decorated TiO2-ZrO2 (TiO2-ZrO2-Cu) uniform films were sputtered on polyester (PES). These films were irradiated under low intensity solar simulated light and led to bacterial inactivation in aerobic and anaerobi ...

Ti was sputtered in a plasma chamber under a N2 atmosphere, depositing TiN films on polyester fibers. These films show a significant adsorption in the visible spectral region. A TiN layer 50 nm thick sputtered for 3 min under low intensity/actinic visible ...

This study presents bacterial reduction by visible light-absorbing nanocomposite nitride and oxynitride films showing absorption in the visible spectral range and their silver (Ag) derivatives. The design, sputtering, bacterial evaluation, and surface characterization of uniform and adhesive nanoparticulate nitride and oxynitride films are described in detail. Bacterial reduction was observed by these Ag-nitrides/oxynitrides to proceed in the dark and with higher kinetics under daylight/actinic light irradi

This study reports the details Escherichia coli inactivation kinetics on TiON and TiON-Ag films sputtered on polyester by direct current reactive magnetron sputtering (DC) and pulsed magnetron sputtering (DCP) in an Ar/N2 /O2 atmosphere. The use of TiON le ...

A review with 21 refs. on the strategy of wastewater treatment in org. chem. industry. Biodegradability tests, toxicity tests, aerobic and anaerobic treatment processes, and electrochem. oxidn. of org. substances are discussed with an example of a pilot plant for the combined electrochem. and biol. wastewater treatment.
