The Fenton and photo-Fenton detoxification of non-biodegradable chemical pollution in water was investigated under simulated UV light in the laboratory and under direct sunlight in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. The laboratory experiments enable one to make a ...

The bactericidal effect of photocatalysis with TiO2 is well recognized, although its mode of action is still poorly characterized. It may involve oxidation, as illuminated TiO2 generates reactive oxygen species. Here we analyze the bactericidal effect of i ...

The first evidence for the synthesis of a uniform, adhesive polyethylene–FeOx (PE–FeOx) surface leading efficiently to bacterial inactivation is addressed in this study. PE was loaded with 0.04–0.08% Fe wt/wt PE after RF-plasma pretreatment was required to ...

This study reports visible light sensitive ZrNO and ZrNO-Ag polyester samples prepared by sputtering in an Ar/N-2/O-2 atmosphere leading to Escherichia coil bacterial inactivation. The bacterial inactivation by ZrNO avoids the increasing environmental conc ...

Solar disinfection (SODIS) in 2-L bottles is a well-established drinking water treatment technique, suitable for rural, peri-urban, or isolated communities in tropical or sub-tropical climates. In this work, we assess the enlargement of the treatment volum ...

This study reports new findings on the sputtered Cu-polyester (Cu-PES) bacterial inactivation under low intensity visible light (lambda > 400 nm). Cu-PES samples sputtered for 160 s led to the complete inactivation of E. coli in anaerobic and aerobic media ...

An efficient, visible light active, N, S-codoped TiO2-based photocatalyst was prepared by reacting thiourea with nanoparticulate anatase TiO2. Commercial anatase powders were manually ground with thiourea and annealed at 400 degrees C in two crucibles with ...

This study reports the first application of Fe-citrate-based photo-Fenton chemistry for the inactivation of Escherichia coil. Promising results of bacterial inactivation at near-neutral and alkaline pH conditions were obtained, while using low iron concent ...

This study presents new evidence for the events leading to Escherichia coil reduction in the absence of light irradiation on TiO2-polyester (from now on TiO2-PES. By transmission electron microscopy (TEM) the diffusion of TiO2 NP's aggregates with the E. c ...

In this work, an intensive assessment of solar disinfection of secondary wastewater was elaborated in controlled laboratory conditions. Batch tests of Escherichia coil-spiked synthetic secondary effluent, at nine different constant intensity levels, were f ...

The kinetics of bacterial reduction of Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) on co-sputtered TiO2/Cu-polyester (TiO2/Cu-PES) was found to be little dependent on the applied light dose. But in the case of Escherichia coil, the bacterial reduction kinetics was observed to be strongly dependent on the applied light dose. The reasons for the different effect of the applied light dose on the bacterial reduction are discussed. Mechanistic considerations are suggested to account for this observation.TiO2/Cu-PES obtained by

The photodegradation of phenol and dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) by \ce{BiVO4} was studied in the absence as well as presence of selected electron scavengers. The experiments were performed under the visible (vis) irradiation of aqueous solutions over a wide ...

We studied the electrochemical oxidation, on Pt anodes, of industrial wastewaters containing 5-amino-6-methyl-2-benzimidazolone (AMBI). Electrolysis of this non-biodegradable effluent produces simultaneous oxidation of AMBI and chloride ions. Highly oxidative chlorine intermediate species further boost the degradation of AMBI. Solution temperature, pH and current density affect little the degradation of AMBI. At our best conditions, AMBI was 100% degraded in 45 min. However, because the reaction intermediat

An overview of recent works (1998–2002) coupling Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) and Biological systems for wastewater treatment confirms the beneficial effects of such two-steps treatment at lab scale. In this paper, an innovative coupled solar-biological system at field pilot scale was designed, builds, and experimental results are presented. The strategy to develop this system implicates the choice of the most appropriate solar collector and the most efficient AOP, the optimization of this AOP, the choi

This study presents the accelerated discoloration/degradation of methylene blue (MB) in solution by Fenton reagent under exposure to ultraviolet (UV) or Vacuum-UV/UV (VUV/UV) light in an innovative micro photo-reactor. The MB degradation was kinetically fa ...

Disinfection of surface water containing dissolved iron (0.3 mg L-1) at natural neutral pH (similar to 7.5) was carried out via solar disinfection (SODIS) treatment in PET bottles with H2O2 (10 mg L-1). Wild coliforms and Salmonella sp. were monitored for ...

This study reports on a Cu-sputtered film on polystyrene (PS) leading to the discoloration/degradation of methylene blue (MB) under low intensity solar simulated irradiation. Direct current magnetron sputtering (DCMS) was used to graft uniform, adhesive Cu ...

This work deals with the ultrasonic degradation (800 kHz) of crystal violet (CV) under different experimental conditions. The effects of saturating gas (argon, carbon dioxide and air), CV concentration (2.45-1225 mu mol L-1), pH (3-9) and power (20-80 W) w ...

The controlled biodegradation of ametryn and methomyl has been performed, in accordance with the OECD Zahn-Wellens/EMPA procedure, by use of an enriched mixture of activated sludge collected from three domestic waste-water-treatment plants (WWTP). During the process concentrations of ametryn and methomyl in the water samples were isolated by solid-phase extraction (SPE); recovery rates were 98.9 and 93.2 for methomyl and ametryn, respectively. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) was used to dete

he electrochemical oxidation of phenol for waste water treatment was studied at a platinum anode. Analysis of reaction intermediates and a carbon balance has shown that the reaction occurs by two parallel pathways; chemical oxidation with electrogenerated hydroxyl radicals and direct combustion of adsorbed phenol or/and its aromatic intermediates to CO2.
