Advanced Oxidation Processes and in particular photo-Fenton, represent promising strategies of pathogen inactivation in wastewater effluents. Nevertheless, its full potential is not yet unlocked, as the efficacy of photo-Fenton against viruses has not been ...

Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae is a critical priority pathogen according to the World Health Organization's classification. Effluents of municipal wastewater treatment plants (EWWTP) may be a route for K. pneumoniae dissemination. Herein, the i ...

This study reports the colloidal preparation FeOx, TiO2 and FeOx-TiO2 grafted on polyethylene (PE) films leading to bacterial inactivation. A fast bacterial inactivation was attained by the FeOx-TiO2 compared to the FeOx-PE film due to the interfacial char ...

The bacterial inactivation mechanisms by solar light and the photo-Fenton process is still a matter of debate. In this study, we bring evidence towards the elucidation of the mechanisms that govern photo-Fenton disinfection at near-neutral pH. With the use ...

In this study, the possibility of predicting the efficacy of Solar water disinfection (SODIS) for the removal of bacterial pathogens was assessed by the development of a three-level plan: firstly, systematic E. coli inactivation was performed (in vitro) in ...

This study addresses the preparation of uniform, adhesive and robust thin Cu-polyethylene films (PE-CuOx) by direct current magnetron sputtering (DCMS). Cu-coatings of 25 nm sputtered with 60W deposited 0.16% weight Cu/weight PE leading to the fastest bact ...

This article addresses the cell wall damage of Escherichia coil (from now on E. coil) by TiO2 suspensions. The dynamics of TiO2 photocatalysis by thin films layers is described. The films were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy ...

Clean water is essential for human survival, but access to safe drinking water remains a challenge in resource -limited regions. Herein, we explored a low-cost but effective solution for water potabilization using natural iron sources from soils along with ...

The contamination of air and water is one of the major concerns towards the development of a sustainable world in the 21st century. In this context many efforts are devoted to the design of photocatalytic paints able to degrade chemical and biological impu ...

In this work, the oxidative stress was produced by the illumination of either fixed TiO2 or suspended TiO2. and the relation between cultivability and viability under oxidative conditions was studied using a Direct Viable Count (DVC) and Fluorescence In Si ...

The photocatalytic activity, mechanism and characterization of polyethylene-TiO2 films (PE-TiO2) during the discoloration/degradation of methylene blue (MB) are reported in this study. PE-TiO2 films were prepared at moderate temperatures (similar to 90 deg ...

This study focuses on the mineralization of 5-amino-6-methyl-2-benzimidazolone (AMBI), an important precursor in the industrial production of dyes, through an integrated Fe(III) photoassisted–biological system without addition of other electron acceptor than O2. The iron photoassisted process produces a biocompatible solution, removing 100% of the initial biorecalcitrant compound and 40% of the Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC), and then the complete mineralization was achieved in the biological treatment. The

Under air atmosphere, the photocatalytic discoloration of malachite green (MG) aqueous solutions (a triphenylmethane dye) in the presence of TiO2 and UV light followed an oxidative pathway, involving an N-demethylation process evidenced by a blue shifting ...

An important issue in chlorine drinking water disinfection is the generation from natural organic matter (NOM) of disinfection by-products (DBPs), especially trihalomethanes (THMs). The THMs generation can be limited by reducing the levels of NOM prior to ...

Bactericidal action of illuminated TiO2 on pure culture of Escherichia coli K 12 and bacterial consortium was studied. Photocatalytic E. coli inactivation rate was dependent on the biological parameters such as: physiological state, generation and initial concentration of bacteria. The behavior of the bacterial suspension during the subsequent dark period was discussed in order to estimate the potential of using the photocatalytic treatment process in a real water disinfection Situation. The effective disin

The preparation of iron oxide-coated polymer films and their photocatalytic activity in organic pollutants degradation and bacterial inactivation is described. Polyvinyl fluoride (PVF), polyethylene (PE) and polyethylene terephtalate (PET) films were used ...

For fifty years, heterogeneous photocatalysis has been considered as having potential to remove organic and microbiological pollutants from water under either artificial UV light or sunlight irradiation. However, after tens of thousands of published resear ...

This study shows that the surface modification of TiO2 is an effective route to increase the TiO2 absorption in the visible region up to similar to 600 nm for photocatalytic applications. The In2O3 decorated TiO2 films on polyester obtained by reactive sputtering were shown to accelerate the Escherichia coli inactivation under actinic and simulated solar light. TiO2 sputtered films for 10 min inactivated bacteria within 300 min under actinic light. The inactivation time was reduced when using a TiO2 10 min-

This review focuses on Cu/TiO2 sequentially sputtered and Cu-TiO2 co-sputtered catalytic/photocatalytic surfaces that lead to bacterial inactivation, discussing their stability, synthesis, adhesion, and antibacterial kinetics. The intervention of TiO2, Cu, ...

Iron photo-assisted inactivation of wild enteric bacteria (total coliforms/E. coil and Salmonella spp.) was carried out in water from the Sahelian wells having different pH (W1:4.9 and W2: 6.3) and a natural iron content of 0.07 mg/L We evaluate the effici ...
