This work presents a novel type of carbon fiber reinforcement that allows the fabrication of dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) whose properties are independent of their aspect ratio. The reinforcement consists of stiff carbon fibers continuously distri ...

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) remain a major complication of diabetes mellitus, with significant human and economic costs. Plantar pressure (PP) is the most widely used surrogate to assess DFU risk. Existing PP measurement insoles are primarily designed for in-clinic assessments using external instrumentation to guide passive offloading strategies. However, reliance on brief clinical measurements limits their ability to capture real-world loading patterns, motivating the development of sensing systems capable

Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) based actuators have become ideal candidates for use in compact and lightweight applications. These smart materials have often been referred to as artificial muscles due to their high work volume density. In this paper, a flexure-b ...

Uniform magnetic fields are desired in a wide range of applications. The most known device achieving such a purpose is the pair of Helmholtz coils. It consists of two identical circular coils, with their main axis aligned and placed at a distance equal to ...

The ubiquitous implementation of 5G networks and the Internet of Things (IoT), brings about the importance of indoor localization. Even though Global Positioning System (GPS) provides an efficient outdoor Positioning System (PS), indoor positioning techniq ...

Mechanical forces are central to regulating cell health, yet reproducing such forces in vitro remains challenging. Existing systems are bulky, limited in design, or unsuitable for long‐term use. Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) offer a soft and flexible alternative capable of delivering controlled mechanical strain, but concerns remain that the high voltages required for actuation might harm cells through electric field exposure. Here, we systematically evaluate DEA‐based cell stretchers using human bl

In this article a high performance Extended Kalman filter algorithm is used to estimate rotor speed, rotor position and load torque in a Hybrid Stepper Motor (HSM). Together with a PI speed controller, the Kalman filter forms a very robust sensorless closed loop system. During acceleration the motor is capable of running in closed loop from 0-100% of the nominal speed. The controller can handle charge steps of over 50% of the maximum load torque, and acceleration up to 13 [krad/s 2]. To achieve theses good

Although heart transplantation is a gold standard for severe heart failure, there is a need for alternative effective therapies. A dielectric‐elastomer aorta is used to augment the physiological role of the aorta in the human circulatory system. To this en ...

Driving DEAs requires time-varying high voltage power supplies, up to 18kV for 200um polymer layers. HV amplifiers are commonly used but bulky and expensive. Designing embedded actuators requires compact and efficient powersupplies. Furthermore, only a lit ...

This paper presents the rotor design optimization for a reaction sphere (RS) actuator. The RS is a permanent-magnet synchronous spherical actuator whose rotor is magnetically levitated and can be accelerated about any desired axis. The RS is composed of an ...

Dielectric Elastomer Actuators (DEAs) are a recent type of smart materials that show impressive performances as soft actuators and that have become new references when developing soft artificial muscles. Implementing dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) t ...

Electrical machines are the central components of many energy conversion systems. Developing the performance of these devices is critical for improved energy management in our society. A new generation of electrical equipment has been enabled by the recent ...

The paper presents a completely analytical formula to determine the phase back emf of a slotted BLDC motor with interior or exterior rotor and parallel or radial permanent magnet (PM) magnetization and concentrated winding. The formula is based on integrat ...

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) present a group of actuators with exceptionally high actuation speeds and a number of possible configurations for various applications. Reinforcing DEAs with either discrete or continuous reinforcement layers leads to a drastically modified DEA actuation behavior. In strip DEAs, reinforcements can block almost all strain in one direction, thus, providing a higher actuation strain and force output in the targeted actuation direction. Additionally, more complex actuation

NOVELTY - After disconnection from normal control (3) a pulse generator (4) sends positive and negative pulses to a motor winding R. The response currents are measured (5) from voltages (Vpr,Vnr) which appear after a fixed time on a neutral resistor (2) and their difference is calculated. Similar differences are taken for the two other windings (S,T) and the three values are supplied to a calculator (6) which uses stored data to deduce the rotor position USE - To find the angular position of electromagnetic

Contactless power transfer using inductive coupling is a well-known way to transfer energy from a transmitter to a receiver without any physical link. The applications are multiple. In this paper, the design and control of such a system for a contactless battery charger is investigated. The behaviour of the battery turns the system into a non-linear one. A solution dealing with the compensation topologies which aims to simplify the control of the transformer without any additional power electronics is propo

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) in quartz watches is becoming more and more important due to the use of plastic materials and tactile sensors. The discharge can lead to different type of dysfunction such as a simple reset, a latch-up or the destruction of the electronics In this paper, only the reversible dysfunction is considered. Electrostatic finite element (FEM) simulation completed with analytical calculation are carried out. Spatial distribution of the voltages will be shown. Values of the discrete elem

Electronic door lock cylinders need some sort of mechanical actuator to toggle the locking state between open and closed. The main requirements are high security standards, low power consumption, reasonable production costs, and facile integration of the actuator into the mechatronic system. Existing mechatronic locking devices are actuated by DC motors. Complex security setups are necessary to prevent the motor to be moved when not supplied or to impede magnetic picking. Piezoelectric ultrasonic motors (PU

This paper is related to the characteristics of a traveling wave ultrasonic linear motor. After a brief state of the art of this type of motor, the working principle is presented. Then, to describe analytically the phenomena existing, a theoretical model is built using wave theory and contact mechanism laws. Analytical modeling is then validated by FEM simulations. Transient and steady-state responses of the system are obtained. In function of the voltage applied to the piezoelectric ceramics, the deformati

Recently, the interest in haptic feedback is growing thanks to its ability to enhance the interaction with Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs). This research project is exploring the potential of machine learning combined with piezoelectric actuators to genera ...
