Head‐mounted displays for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) allow users to see highly realistic virtual worlds. The wearable haptics that enable feeling and touching these virtual objects are typically bulky, tethered, and provide only low fi ...

This paper presents a hybrid FEM-analytical model for the magnetic flux density, the force and torque of a Reaction Sphere (RS) actuator for satellite attitude control. The RS is a permanent magnet synchronous spherical actuator whose rotor is magnetically ...

Insects are a constant source of inspiration for roboticists. Their compliant bodies allow them to squeeze through small openings and be highly resilient to impacts. However, making subgram autonomous soft robots untethered and capable of responding intell ...

Magneto-Rheological (MR) fluids consist in a suspension of ferromagnetic particles dispersed in a fluid carrier. If excited by a magnetic source, the nearby magnetic field induces the particles magnetization with the formation of chainlike structures align ...

This paper deals with the control-oriented modeling of a multilayered dielectric elastomer actuator based tube. The actuator is clamped at both sides and performs a radial displacement. The hyperelastic deformation and the viscoelastic performance, togethe ...

The proposed paper presents the fabrication and the modeling of magnetic membranes composed of Fe2O3 or NdFeB powder, and which could be polarized in order to create soft magnets. In this paper, two hyperelastic models (Yeoh and Gent) are chosen to describ ...

This publication presents the application of Non-Linear Programming (NLP) to the design of AC induction motors driving hydraulic pumps on commercial aircrafts. In addition to the usual constraints on the geometry or on the efficiency of the motor, the specifications for this application include conditions on the supply frequency, environment temperature and in-rush current, which are very difficult to meet. The NLP had to be adapted to support constraints on multiple operating points of the motor. A prototy

Artificial respirators use an electric source of energy to supply the various active components which control the airflow. A portable or autonomous respirator (emergency, war, ambulance, etc), needs a battery or an energy container to be supplied with great reliability. This paper describes an industrial project that uses only pneumatic energy to supply all the electronic components. Furthermore, the generator used for the electric supply regulates the airflow by controlling its phase currents

Fluidic systems enable actuation in various applications, such as automotive, medical, and industrial robotics. Miniaturized valves constitute a fundamental controlling element of modern fluidic systems, intriguing the interest of many researchers. This le ...

The valve mode is the most common operational mode of magnetorheological fluid (MRF) devices in engineering applications. Magnetorheological (MR) valves have been studied upon their self-sensing capabilities resulting from the electromagnetic induction phe ...

In order to control the speed and/or position of permanent magnet (PM) motors, they require position sensors. Basically, the auto-commutation needs 3 sensors for a 3-phase motor. In micro-motors, as there is no space for the sensors, self-sensing must be u ...

Current treatments for underactive bladder (UAB) have negative side effects, such as urinary tract infections, mainly because devices used for bladder emptying are in direct contact with urine (e.g. permanent or intermittent catheterisation). Moreover, mos ...

The brushless DC motors are normally built with rotor mounted PMs, which create the necessary back EMF voltage to produce a mechanical power. The shape of this back-EMF voltage is very important compared to the phase voltage supply one. Indeed, the electromechanical power is obtained by the product of the back-EMF and the phase current. Two possibilities are normally used to make the choice of the electronic supply. If the back-EMF is trapezoidal, the supply will be "block" (120 degrees, two-phase one mode)

To be able to calculate the performances of a hybrid stepping motor or to design it in a short time, it is essential to apply an efficient model, accepting a slight loss of precision. Using software based on finite elements and executing calculations are difficult and time consuming, but normally offers increased precision. Finite elements may be used to better understand some phenomena and help establishing an analytic modeling based on magnetic equivalent scheme. Torque calculation is therefore much faste

Urinary incontinence (UI) is prevalent and distressing medical condition affecting millions of patients worldwide. Current treatment options for severe cases often involve surgical intervention, such as the implantation of an artificial urinary sphincter ( ...

Stretchable actuators that replicate the motion of natural muscle are crucial for the development of next-generation biomedical implants. Among these, dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) standout due to their high compliance, energy density, and silent operation. While promising, several technical barriers currently restrict their safe and effective use as implants in the human body. This review outlines the recent technical advances and major challenges facing the clinical translation of DEAs as implanta

The proposed paper discusses a new methodology to monitor the B-H curve of magnetic fluids, which have low relative permeability. The set-up consists of a magnetic circuit which encloses a sample. A first coil allows creating a magnetic field into the samp ...

This paper presents a general analytical model for predicting the magnetic field of slotless permanent-magnet machines. The model takes into account the effect of eddy currents in conductive regions and notably in conductive permanent magnets without negle ...

Dielectric Elastomer Actuators (DEAs) have emerged as versatile and promising devices for a multitude of applications, including soft robotics, haptic interfaces, and artificial muscles. DEAs are an interesting soft actuator technology due to their high en ...

Objectives We propose an evolution of a dielectric elastomer actuator based cardiac assist device that acts as a counterpulsation system. We introduce a new pre-stretched actuator and implant the device in a graft bypass between the ascending and descendin ...
