The use of low-stress SU8 nanocomposites as a functional material for micro- parts and coating applications is described in this paper. It was found that the nanoparticles lower the internal stress and decrease the wear rate and frictional coefficient of t ...

The invention relates to a replacement metallic prosthesis to be implanted which contains means monitor its condition during use in order to allow an early detection of failure or insufficient functionality, wherein said means comprise implanted sensors an ...

Understanding the corrosion behavior of biomedical materials in the human body is an essential step for the development of improved materials and clinical procedures in arthroplasty. In this work, the corrosion behavior of Ti and CoCrMo alloys in human syn ...

By designing advantageous cellular geometries and combining the material size effects at the nanometer scale, lightweight hybrid microarchitectured materials with tailored structural properties are achieved. Prior studies reported the mechanical properties ...

Self-lubricating, gold matrix composite coatings were produced by electrochemical codeposition of carbon nanocapsules filled with ionic liquid (IL) from a colloidal galvanic bath on a nickel electrode. The tribological response of the composite coatings wa ...

Copper beryllium age hardenable alloys (Cu-Be) are widely used and appreciated for combining exceptional mechanical and electrical properties. However, the toxicity of these alloys pushes the scientific community to develop alternative alloys. Cu-Ni-Sn all ...

Tribocorrosion is a material deterioration or transformation resulting from simultaneous action of wear and corrosion. Tribocorrosion is found in many engineering applications but the involved mechanisms are still little understood. The investigation of tr ...

P>The role of fat content and type of surfactant for oral friction processes and texture perception of oil-in-water emulsions was assessed. Emulsions at 22% and 33% fat content containing either sodium caseinate or a sucrose ester as emulsifier were compar ...

The present study was initiated with the aim to assess the in vivo electrochemical corrosion behaviour of CoCrMo biomedical alloys in human synovial fluids in an attempt to identify possible patient or pathology specific effects. For this, electrochemical ...

Gold coating are widely used in industry due to their corrosion resistance, electrical conductivity and low contact resistance. However, friction and wear can limit their functionality and lifetime. This study addresses the degradation of a commercial fine ...

The mechanical properties of electrodeposited copper with highly-oriented nanoscale twins were investigated by micropillar compression. Uniform nanotwinned copper films with preferred twin orientations, either vertical or horizontal, were obtained by contr ...

The concern caused by the rising population of space debris has increased. One of the recommended mitigation measures is the safe re-entry disposal either in a controlled or uncontrolled manner. Performing a controlled re-entry, where the spacecraft is gui ...

Functionalization of colloidal particles based on the use of polyelectrolytes and heterocoagulation was combined with electrophoretic deposition (EPD), with the aim of depositing titania-polystyrene (TiO2-PS) composite particles on Ti6A14V substrates. The ...

Nanocrystalline and ultrafine-grained materials show enhanced strain rate sensitivity (SRS) in comparison to their coarse grained counterparts. Majority of SRS measurements on nanocrystalline thin films reported in literature have focused on nanoindentatio ...

PurposeThe aim of this study is to experimentally analyze the friction and wear responses of different steels to different surface films generated in oil-lubricated tribological contacts.Design/methodology/approachTribological experiments were conducted us ...

A composite running-in wear model for metal-on-metal artificial hip joints, which combines tribo-corrosion and lubrication aspects, was published recently. In order to check the quality of the model prediction, wear rates from nineteen well-controlled simu ...

The corrosion mechanisms of a Roman iron bezel ring were investigated by in-depth characterization of its uncommon corrosion pattern and thermodynamic modelling. A silver foil and altered glass remnants were identified, covered with thick strata of magneti ...

The lubrication regimes of a contact pair escapement-ruby pallet of a Swiss lever escapement have been investigated combining the theory of fluid lubrication with a well-established kinematic and inverse dynamic multibody model. The kinematic analytical re ...

Frettingwear proceeds through particle detachment from the contacting surfaces which, while trapped in the contact zone, can affect the frictional and wear response. Ball-on-flat fretting experiments were carried out between steel specimens under gross sli ...

The corrosion and tribocorrosion of tungsten in 0.01 M H2SO4, without and with the presence of lactic acid and phosphoric acid as chelating agents was studied here. ...
