Energy piles efficiency is strongly affected by soil saturation conditions: low water contents considerably decrease their performance thus limiting the possibility to extend their application in arid environments. This paper investigates the MICP (Microbi ...

A novel metre-scale testing concept for studying geological carbon dioxide (CO2) storage (GCS) is presented, targeting a better understanding of the interplay between the different multi-physical processes and the time scales they occur. Unlike existing laboratory- and field-scale data, the proposed intermediate scale targets high-resolution measurements while accounting for spatial distribution. A metre-scale experimental setup is designed to reproduce stress and pressure conditions similar to the field. S

Active clays are notable for their high-swelling and sealing properties, making them valuable in various geotechnical applications, including deep repositories for nuclear waste and landfills. These properties arise from water physically adsorbed to clay particles, having an ordered structure, and greater density. Existing hydro-mechanical constitutive models for water retention behaviour prediction, which distinguish between adsorption and capillary water, are based on theoretical formulations and lack exp

Conventional soil improvement techniques can lead to permanent soil pollution or emission of carbon dioxide. It is therefore a challenge for engineers to design alternative sustainable and cost-effective grouting techniques. In Microbial Induced Calcite Pr ...

Nuclear waste repositories are being considered by many countries to be the best solution to deal with the increasing amount of High-Level Waste (HLW) from nuclear power plant operation and decommissioning. The Swiss repository concept has been assessed si ...

The understanding of the fundamental behaviour of clays subjected to high temperatures is essential when working with clay barriers in nuclear waste storage, drilling of deep offshore wells or using clay liners on landfills. The effect of temperature on th ...

This paper reports recent advances in modelling MICP at the engineering scale, in particular with respect to the stress-strain-strength modelling of bio-cemented soils. A complete Bio-Chemo-Hydro-Mechanical (BCHM) model is presented. The BCH model is based ...

Research interest in the thermo-mechanical behaviour of unsaturated soils is growing as a result of an increasing number of geomechanical problems involving both thermal and unsaturated effects. In this framework, this paper addresses a unified thermo-mech ...

How water saturation affects elastic properties is particularly important for analyses of gas shales in unconventional reservoirs, but experimental data in defined partially saturated conditions are rare. We show that the elastic moduli of a gas shale vary ...

Bio-cementation through microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP) has the potential to overcome several technical and environmental limitations of conventional cement-based soil improvement techniques. While a significant amount of research has been ...

The modelling of debris flow initiation in slopes is addressed in this paper. First, possible factors governing debris flow initiation are established. Then, a coupled hydro-mechanical model for deformable porous media with two pore fluids that is used to ...

The study presented herein adopts a new vision of the processes involved in carbonate mineralization induced by MICP from an electrochemical and crystal growth perspective. More precisely a specific line of focus refers to the species involved in the bio-c ...

The present study integrates direct electric currents into traditional calcium carbonate mineralization to investigate electrochemical interactions and the subsequent crystalline growth of CaCO3 bonds in sand. A specific line of focus refers to the effect ...

This paper addresses a new, unified thermo-mechanical constitutive model for unsaturated soils through a coupled study. In the context of elastoplasticity and the critical state theory, the model uses the concepts of multimechanism and bounding surface the ...

Shales have become increasingly important because they play key roles in modern energy and environmental geomechanics applications, such as nuclear waste storage, non-conventional oil and gas operations and CO2 geological storage. Shale behaves in a quasi- ...

As geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) are becoming integral components of modern municipal solid waste landfill lining systems, increased interest is directed at investigating their behaviour under different environmental stresses such temperature, chemical c ...

The effective stress principle, conventionally applied in saturated soils, is reviewed for constitutive modelling purposes. The assumptions for the applicability of Terzaghi’s single effective stress are recalled and its advantages are inventoried. The pos ...

Geotechnical problems with total stress changes occurring rapidly relative to the soil consolidation time can be conveniently addressed using an effective stress-based approach. For saturated states, analytical formulations of pore-pressure coefficients ad ...

Microbial Induced Calcite Precipitation (MICP) is an innovative technique for soil grouting involving a bacterial reactive grout. A comprehensive research work is carried out to better understand and consequently describe the phenomenon of multispecies rea ...

This study presents a numerical investigation of the effects of coupled material properties on the caprock stability. A thermo-hydro-mechanical framework is proposed in order to reproduce the physical processes. The results indicate that for a given geomet ...
