Energy piles are an effective and economic means of using geothermal energy resources for heating and cooling buildings, contributing to legislative requirements for renewable energy in new construction. While such piles have been used for around 25 years ...

Water uptake of gas shales is commonly considered one of the most important factors responsible for fluid loss during flowback operations after hydraulic fracturing. Imbibition experiments cover a key role in this context to analyze the impact of several f ...

Fluid injection in the subsurface has significantly increased over the last decades. Fluid injection causes pressure buildup, which reduces effective stresses and thus, shear failure conditions may eventually occur, inducing microseismic and seismic events ...

CO2 storage in geological formation, especially in deep aquifers, is considered as a compromising technology to reduce the impact of CO2 on the greenhouse effect. Practically, large-volume of CO2 could be injected at a high rate into a system which consists of a highly porous host aquifer covered by a very low permeable sealing caprock. The caprock may undergo significant deformation and geomechanical instabilities, such as caprock failure and fault reactivation. In addition, the temperature of the injected

The Task 7 of the EBS task force is devoted to the modelling of gas transport phenomena in bentonite. This report describes the second phase of Task 7 that concerns the finite element modelling of some specific tests performed on granular bentonite to asse ...

Different physical problems have been analysed in the preceding {chapters}: they relate to water transfer, to heat transfer, to pollutant transfer and to mechanical equilibrium. All these problems are governed by differential equations and boundary conditions but analytical solutions are, in general, unobtainable because of the complex interaction of the various aspects which are always present in real-world situations. In such circumstances, numerical modelling can give a valuable alternative methodology f

Water confined to channels one nanometer thick exhibits electrochemical behavior distinct from bulk water, including enhanced protonic conductivity and large dielectric anisotropy. Here, we exploit these characteristics to design a scalable electrochemical energy storage system-a “blue capacitor”-constructed entirely from naturally abundant materials. By assembling layered clays and conductive graphene, we produce 1-nm-thick channels in which confined water acts as the sole electrolyte. We systematically st

Natural and compacted soils are usually characterized by aggregation of particles. The mechanical behaviour of these materials depends on soil structure. The oedometric compression tests performed on aggregated samples presented here showed that these mate ...

This paper aims to analyse the anisotropic features of behaviour of Opalinus Clay using the theory of plastic multi-mechanisms. The results of triaxial tests conducted with different load levels and directions showed that the mechanical behaviour of this s ...

Microencapsulated phase change materials (mPCM) are advanced materials capable of absorbing and releasing heat through phase transitions, making them well-suited for enhancing the thermal performance of energy geostructures. Despite significant advances in the integration of phase change materials (PCM) into building envelopes, research on the use of PCM in soils remains limited. This study addresses this gap by investigating the impact of mPCM on the thermal and mechanical properties of silty soil, with a

In the past years, transport of gases in clay buffer materials for Engineered Barrier Systems (EBS) has been deeply investigated by many research programs in the field of nuclear waste disposal. The phenomenological features of gas transport obtained from ...

This paper presents the results of a comprehensive experimental study of the desiccation of fine-grained soils. Air-drying of initially saturated soil slabs in controlled conditions is investigated, by performing three kinds of tests: free desiccation test ...

Research interest in the thermo-mechanical behaviour of soils is growing as a result of an increasing number of geomechanical problems involving thermal effects. This paper concerns the constitutive modelling of non- isothermal mechanical behaviour of clay ...

The behaviour of the pile-soil interface is important for the response of floating piles in terms of displacement and lateral friction. Regarding energy piles, which couple the structural roles of deep foundations with the principle of shallow geothermal e ...

The effects of viscoelastic filled rock joints on wave propagation are of great significance in rock engineering. The solutions in time domain for plane longitudinal ( P-) and transverse ( S-) waves propagation across a viscoelastic rock joint are derived ...

Understanding gas transport processes in clay barriers is crucial for assessing the long-term safety of geological repositories for radioactive waste. Fundamental and well-designed experimental research at the laboratory scale is an indispensable prerequis ...

Engineering issues for which the understanding of the chemo-mechanical behaviour of soils is relevant include wellbore stability problems, the salinification of groundwater, and nuclear waste storage. However, despite the vast number of situations in which couplings between chemistry and mechanics occur, the available constitutive models rely on limited experimental evidence. This paper presents the results of an experimental programme on the chemo-mechanical behaviour of a non-swelling illite. The osmotic

Over the past twenty years, a substantial amount of research has been performed to expand the modeling capabilities of energy geostructures: innovative earth-contact structures that provide combined structural support and renewable energy supply. Several a ...

Although simplified methods have been proposed to allow for group effect and soil-pile-raft interaction, most of them are concentrated on one type of loading rendering the applicability of these methods rather limited to cases under such loads. In the case ...

As biocementation is beginning to be explored to improve the engineering properties of fine-grained soils such as clays, its performance under unsaturated conditions has become a key concern. In these geomaterials, the coupled interaction between the liquid and gas phases and their interaction with the solid skeleton plays a key role in the overall hydromechanical response. Accordingly, establishing a fundamental understanding of the unsaturated mechanical behavior of biocemented clays requires examining ho
