This paper investigates the anisotropic hydro-mechanical behaviour of Opalinus Clay shale, the host material currently being considered for the construction of a nuclear waste repository in Switzerland. Consolidated and drained triaxial tests on Opalinus C ...

In an attempt to describe the basic phenomenon of grout propagation, a continuous model of miscible fluid displacement in deformable saturated porous media is proposed. In order to exhibit the relevance of the hydromechanical coupling during the mass trans ...

Despite the recent experimental studies of soil structure, a comprehensive understanding of the macroscopic response of a soil in relation to its structure has not yet been achieved. This lack of understanding reveals the need for further assessments of so ...

Two laboratory experiments are used to provide preliminary evidence towards upscaling the microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP) for soils. Fine sand is packed and subsequently subjected to MICP treatment in 11-liter cylindrical tanks. Different conditions are tested regarding the bacteria injection source as well as their propagation in the porous medium. The goal is to associate the adopted application strategy with the final shape, size and total mass of precipitated calcite in the yielded bio-

The field of geotechnics is moving fast towards benefiting from new methods and tools to improve the understanding of couplings among complex transport, chemical and biological phenomena. Calcite bio-mineralization, result of bio-grouting, stands out as su ...

An experimental investigation to analyse the anisotropic volumetric response of shaly and sandy facies of Opalinus Clay upon suction variations is presented. Obtained results demonstrate the different behaviour of the tested facies to a wetting-drying cycl ...

The advanced non-destructive method of neutron tomography, together with image analysis, is used to evaluate the structural evolution of an aggregated soil during one-dimensional compression tests. Aggregation of primary particles is a commonly observed ph ...

This chapter reviews some of the current strategies for landslide modelling. Main physical processes in landslides are first recalled. Numerical tools are then introduced for the analysis of the behaviour of slow- and fast-moving landslides. Representative case studies are introduced through the chapter to highlight how different modelling strategies can be used depending on the physical processes that the modeller wants to take into account.

Bacterial strains producing urease can have a major impact on the natural calcite precipitation process if they are supplied with nutrients and urea. In Microbial Induced Calcite Precipitation (MICP) process, the precipitated calcite acts as a cementing ag ...

An automated digital image processing technique is presented for the measurement of specimen volume change during triaxial testing. A digital camera is fixed at a constant distance from the triaxial cell. Pictures taken at various intervals are processed ( ...

The behavior of an energy pile in a group is different from that of an isolated energy pile due to thermal and mechanical interactions. This study aims to extend the load transfer method to consider the mechanical and thermal interactions of energy piles i ...

Ion composition in groundwater at the spent nuclear fuel repositories is a relevant uncertainty for predicting the shear behavior of the bentonite buffer. However, only a few studies investigated the range of shear strength variation with in-situ groundwat ...

Natural and agricultural soils usually possess an aggregated structure; in the sense that they are composed of aggregates and large inter-aggregate pores. Under the natural condition, these soils are usually unsaturated and the large pores are easily drain ...

Damage induced by desiccation (i.e. drying shrinkage and cracking) is an issue to be investigated in deep geological nuclear waste storage engineering. A dried and cracked zone can form in the underground gallery host shale due to ventilation effects. Incr ...

Fissures can have a significant impact on caprock integrity in the context of carbon capture and storage (CCS). In this campaign, the sealing capacity of a pre-fissured caprock material, the Opalinus Clay shale, is studied with real time x-ray imaging duri ...

This paper reports the development of an advanced thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) oedometer in order to characterize the behavior of soils under combined non-isothermal and unsaturated conditions. The simultaneous control of temperature, suction and stress s ...

This paper introduces a novel soil water retention curve model that considers two different mechanisms of water retention –namely capillarity and adsorption – and their evolution with soil fabric along a generalized stress path. The model is formulated bas ...

The impact of partial water saturation on the mechanical behaviour of clays and claystones has been widely proved. This work aims at demonstrating that also for gas shales partial water saturation has a significant influ-ence on their stiffness and strengt ...

This study presents a method for estimating the average vertical displacement of energy pile groups subjected to thermal loads. The method consists of replacing any regular energy pile group with a single equivalent pier of the same length and an equivalen ...

COupled seismogenic GEohazards in Alpine Regions (COGEAR) is an interdisciplinary natural hazard project investigating the hazard chain induced by earthquakes. It addresses tectonic processes and the related variability of seismicity in space and time, ear ...
